  • What's better, the Canon 75-300mm EF lens, or the Canon 55-250mm EF-S STM lens? Both are very popular options for beginner/entry-level photographers, but which one will work better for you? I'm about to review both these lenses, take them through numerous tests, and find out which one is going to work best for you!
    NOTE: If you purchase a lens from these links, I do receive a bit of a commission, BUT the primary reason for leaving these is because there are multiple versions of both lenses, so the ones I link here are the versions I tested in this video!

    For what I am seeing of the lenses, another big differents is that the 75-300mm lens is compatible with a tele-converter (I have one, it's a Sigma APO tele-converter 2x)... I am not sure with the 55-250mm lens, because it has a EF-S mount on it. If it is compatible, than you have no use of the IS. I think if you are compare with eachother, it can make a huge differents.

    Nice video! I have a canon 70D and have been using a 18-135mm lens for everything. My main focus is astrophotography and I'm wondering if the 250mm lens you used would be good for that type of photography. Also, would the lens fit a 70D? I'd assume so because you use an 80D. Just checking.

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  4 роки тому

      Actually I couldn't recommend it for astrophotography. Do you like to shoot zoomed-in for astro, or wider (like 18mm)? The problem with this lens is it has a pretty slow aperture which doesn't let in much light. I'd try to get something that can go down to f/2.8 for astrophotography, it'll give you MUCH better results! Personally, I really like the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8, Canon 24mm f/2.8, and Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. Hope this helps!

    I have them both, I got 75-300mm as kit lens along with 18-55mm when I bought my first DSLR T6i. I took decent cityscape at night with 77-300mm, the result was outstanding probably because I used tripod that night. However, I used it only twice then I got 55-250mm after couple of months so I decided to sell my 75 since it was still brand new. When I went to photography shop (Henry's) they told me they buy it for 20$!!! "Heck no" I said..... I rather keep it than giving you for free so you can sell it for 98$ at least (I live in Canada). So I kept it :)

It's well worth the money. I tested it against a 70-200 f/4 L on my 70 D and the images from the 55-250 looked just as good. The only category in which the L series lens was superior was build quality. You will not regret the purchase of the 55-250 unless you treat your lenses very roughly.

And then I bought the 55-250 IS (the first version, I beleive there were 3 different versions, the 55-250, the 55-250 II and the latest, the STM which is far superior than the first) and I loved the first version. I really enjoed using it when going out with kids with a limited amount of gear and even on that one the image quality was superb. Since then they upgraded the IS, the AF system (they are fast working amazingly effective (IS) and silent. ) As far as I know they did some improvement in the glass elements inside, so the STM is even sharper than the original 55-250 which was very very good to begin with.

    Hi Josh, I like your videos; they are to the point and actionable. Can you recommend a lens for an EOS Rebel T2i for birding/animal watching at a distance? Yes, my camera is old, and I need a new one, but before I move on, I want to see my options. I currently have a Cannon 55-250 with an image stabilizer, but I would like to know if there is another zoom lens that isn't cost-prohibitive. It's also okay to tell me it's time to move on!

    I literally gave away a 75-300 recently lol. Anytime someone asks me which telephoto they should buy, I steer them away from this at all costs. The 55-250 is far superior.

    I have the 75-300 that I use with an APS-C camera, an EOS Rebel XSi, and have been looking for a replacement for it lately mainly because of the chromatic aberration when I have it out to 300mm. My next longest lens is a Tamron 278D 80-210mm, which I really like using until I park my car at a nature preserve or park and get out to try to capture wildlife or what have you. Being that I'm in Michigan, it's overcast a lot, and I find that on overcast days pointing upwards into the trees to capture a bird or whatever is typically going to have just a ton of purple and green fringing when I use the 75-300. On a clear, blue sky day or against greenery I've managed some pretty nice shots... As long as the white content is kept to a minimum, which includes the subject. But it's a weird lens in that it doesn't always happen. Case in point: I took a bunch of pics of a mute swan on the river at 300mm and had next basically zero fringing and had some really decent detail in the feathers, but another pic I took of a butterfly on a tasel, also at 300mm, had quite a bit of purple on white areas of the flower itself or any part approaching white (like the tips of the thorns) while managing pretty good detail on the butterfly.
    I had considered adding the EF-S 55-250 to my lens collection but was concerned with the overlap since I also have a Tamron A15 55-200mm lens (which was designed for APS-C bodies where the 278D wasn't). Now I kinda want to see if I can grab a "gently" used one. Great review, it really helps.

    I have the OG EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM and it's not bad. There is some noise during focusing and as you're moving the camera around with the AF on but not a big deal for me. It takes good pictures and I have no complaints so far. I use it with a Canon EOS R10. Granted, it's nowhere near the performance of my RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 ISM USM, but it's fun to play with and it gets the job done.

    I got the EF-M 55-200mm for my M50, its even better image quality and smaller. However, build quality is plasticy and ofc you miss some reach. Much better for me because together with the adapter its heavy and huge.

    70-300 is full frame and good for price. But i recall having that lens and not liking it so much. Use in camera corrections and stop it down a little. I think it works pretty well for portraits specially on ff body or M series with speed booster. It is probably going to be best cheap telephoto on Canon R6. You get ibis and 20 mp isn't alot.

      Apologize for the late response! The first lens that comes to mind is something like a 70-200 f/4. It's definitely a big jump in price (especially if you get the Image stabilized version) but the images are super sharp! Alternatively, it might be worth looking into Sigma or Tamron lenses. Sigma has lenses like the 50-100 f/1.8 or 50-150 f/2.8. I haven't used any of these except the Canon f/4, but they might be worth researching!

    I already knew the winner but came to watch anyways. One point you forgot was not just that there is not that big of a difference between 250mm and 300mm, but there is a big difference between 55mm and 75mm because you may be in a position where you can't back up. I've wanted to get a EF-S 55-250mm for years but never had the money. It's my next lens to buy though.
