  • This video is for educational purposes only but is pretty much a step by step of all the tasks we did to install the Rack and Pinion.
    1. Bungee the steering wheel down so it can't spin.
    2. Take the tires off
    3. Remove the hydraulic hoses to the rack and pinion
    4. Disconnect the tie rods
    5. Disconnect the Intermediate Steering Shaft
    6. Remove the bolts for the Rack and Pinion
    7. remove rack and pinion
    Check and make sure that your tie rods are in good shape as well as the Intermediate Steering Shaft.
    We bought the rack and pinion from Napa Auto Parts along with the steering fluid.
    Tools used were:
    Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18V Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/2-inch Impact Wrench with Friction Ring (Tool Only) model 2767-20

    Wow, those rotors are rustier than most anchor chains on a 1945 liberty ship.

    Did you have really hard steering before you replaced it

    • @LivingtheNorthernLife
      @LivingtheNorthernLife  3 місяці тому

      We're not professionals but we had a line that popped and was leaking fluid everywhere.
      The power steering wouldn't work at all and it felt almost impossible to turn the wheels.
      There is a steering shaft in there that can cause it to feel similar as the knuckels seize up but it gets hard to steer and then releases and feels jerky to steer.
      Or you could be low on fluid.
      Not sure that helps.

    How long does it take to do a job like that?

    • @LivingtheNorthernLife
      @LivingtheNorthernLife  11 місяців тому

      That will depend on how rusty the system is.
      The short steering shaft can get very rusty and might need replacing like ours did.
      Getting into an area to loosen the bolts can be an adventure as there is very little room unless you have a hoist.
      I think it took as a few hours to do but we split it up into two days.
      Removing was the hard part.
      Best of luck!
      Andrew

    Did you guys flash program it ?

    • @LivingtheNorthernLife
      @LivingtheNorthernLife  Рік тому

      This is not the electronic steering so there was no need to flash it for the rack and pinion.

      Hey Adam,
      Yes we will be doing it this summer.
      We will also be doing the callipers and some body work as well now that we have the engine bulletproofed as well.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Yes they sure are.
      This truck is a project and isn't currently on the road. My son has been learning lots on it.
      Great project that's for sure.

    You should have pressure washed that decrepit ride before starting this nasty job. But then again maybe you were afraid that blowing of 200# of rust off would compromise the structural integrity. I will never go back to the salt belt again.

      We're going to take the good parts off of it now and sell the rest for scrap metal... not much else we can do.
      We should have been under spraying it all these years.

    Jesus Christ. I think it's time to junk that thing. Rusted to hell. Knock in the engine sounds like a phaser or multiple lifters. Frame has deep rust penetration.
    Oh and you over torqued the outer tie rods. Your gonna mess up the boot and make it go out faster. Best of luck on this thing. Mine is a 09 5.4 and it looks amazing must be a lot of salt where y'all live.

      Yes sir!
      It was the phasers and we have replaced them after this.
      Truck is still running but agree it has seen better days.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.
