No guesswork tap centering using the timing method

- This video shows how I tap center. I use a method I developed myself which uses a rhythm established by the pot touching the left hand. You tap with the right hand on the up beat of the rhythm. No guess work , mysticism, or esoteric knowledge required. You just need some coordination and practice on how hard to tap.
I hope it helps.
Here are some links to some other videos on tap centering.

The moment this dude said he was applying his engineering knowledge to develop a technique you know this is gonna be a good video
I've tried to learn how to tap center from all the big potters on social media and have never gotten it. This makes so much sense and is so much easier, thank you so much!
Genius. I haven't tried it but I know I can do this. This is the only explanation I've seen on here that makes sense. Thank you so much.
This is the only video on tap centering that makes any sense to me. Thank you so much
I shared your frustration. It’s just physics. No need to make it mysterious.
Beautiful solution! This is very helpful. "Practice makes better," but only if I know HOW to practice in the first place.
Beautiful, simple and elegant explanation. I’ve had trouble tap centring.👍
You knocked this out the park bro
Finally, tap centering that makes sense. I’ll practice tomorrow. Thank you!!!!!
This makes a lot more sense thank you! Gonna try this tomorrow. 8 years later and you're still helping folks!
I hope it works for you. Thanks for the kind words. For various reasons I’ve taken a hiatus from pottery and teaching classes. Makes me want to get back into it.
OK, OK now I fully understand why I have such a hard time tap centering, it takes rhythm!! I will try this none the less
Finally, method I can understand! I’m definitely going to employ this! Thank you.
From one engineer to another, that is wonderful. Thanks!!!
After going through a lot of videos about tap centering this is the only video that actually taught me! Thank you!
Very promising. I will give it a try. I too have been frustrated by lack of analysis or real method from UA-cam potters.
I think that most potters are the creative type who don’t necessarily approach problems from an analytical perspective. There are exceptions like John Brit. I’m an engineer by profession (specifically, a structural analyst) so I can’t help but over analyze stuff. LOL.
I’m so grateful for the thought you put into this lesson. Good teaching is an art and science of its own. This is the first truly helpful guide to tap centering I’ve come across. I’ve struggled to learn this technique for years. Now I hope!
Greg 99 Thank you for the kind words. I am an engineer by profession, so I guess that influences my communication style. I hope the system works for you.
Thank you for this technique
Awesome video. I appreciate your analysis. I'm just starting out with pottery and my brain works similar to yours. My teacher keeps telling me I'm too analytical with pottery but hearing you talk in these terms in these kinds of videos help a bunch.
I have found it helpful to take classes from several different teachers and apply the things from each that work for you. Pottery comes down to physics, chemistry, heat transfer, control theory, and a bunch of other mechanical engineering subjects. If you can think analytically about the first principles you can make faster progress in refining the mechanics of producing pots. I suppose one can get too analytical when it comes to the artistic aspects, and end up with sterile forms. IMHO hand made ware shouldn’t appear perfect. It should bear evidence of the techniques used to make it, so maybe stay loose and whimsical there. Take everyone’s advice with a grain of salt (including mine).
Keep at it and you’ll find your own way.
Oh my!!!! You solved the biggest mystery for me! Thank you for uploading this!!!
thanks rob, so glad someone decided to explain this in clear english. as a former musician this made so much sense
I hope it works for you
Was sent here by John Rodriguez, this is so helpful!!
Mr Vance the aount o love I have for you at this moment cannot be understated. Thank you
lol that’s a new one
AWESOME!!!! I am an Engineer with no rhythm that has started to do pottery. I have struggled with Tap Centering but I think I can do this. THANKS!!!
Pottery is a great hobby for engineers. You can go as deep into the technical weeds as you care to.
@@robertvance4362 Thanks. It has been fun (when I get a chance). I taught an EE class this term in the evenings so between that and real work I didn't have much time for pottery. I am taking the next semester off so maybe. BTW, I see we are 3rd in LinkedIn so we are have foafs that know each other. Also, my wife was born in Memphis. Small world.
Brillant!! Totally makes sense, but I would have never thought of this myself!!
Hsinchuen Lin is doing this but without your analysis and explanation I would never have seen it and it still would have looked like magic to me. Wonderful video!
Terry Christens Yes I tried to follow what he was doing but couldn’t get the hang of it. I actually think tapping with your left hand , as he does, would be more effective, but that wasn’t going to happen.
Same!!!!
That looks very intuitive, thank you!
Thank you, will try this next time!
How is it that this video doesn't have more views? Thanks Robert!
Brilliant, thank you
Excellent video!!! Thanks so much❣️
Finally! Thank you! Was frustrated at tap centering. Will try this!
Nina M I hope it works for you.
Fantastic method, thank you.
This is such a great idea, I can't wait to try this. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
Wow! This makes a lot of sense to me! I’m going to try this! Thank you
I love it, throwing in logic is very helpful and I can't wait to try your method. Thank you for your video.
This is great! I appreciate the left brained thinking. Can sometimes be hard for artists to break down skills they’ve learned naturally over time.
Thank you.
A boss once told me when we were trying something new that we had the advantage of ignorance! No preconceived ideas to get in the way. Engineers are trained to break down big problems into the fundamental elements of physics so that it becomes a series of easy problems. That is generally my approach and what I attempted to convey here.
Really great analysis for what’s actually happening. Good work. Love the “off beat” description. Another win for syncopation.
Youve got some teaching skills. Logic aswell, great analysis im trying this out next time :)
Amazing; thank you... I can't wait to try it. Makes so much sense, especially because I'm a musician 😅
Thank you! I will try it out tomorrow. Well explained.
The only video that helped. Thanks much.
Glad to hear it!
Thankyou so much !!!!
Very cool, thanks!!!!
Thanks for sharing... got to try this
So helpful! I find this so much easier.
Thank you!
Excellent idea! And a very good video, very structured, straight forward, well paced and devoid of useless information.
Thanks, Robert! I've been having hit or miss success just teaching myself. Your method has been incredibly helpful!
Impressionnant ! Il faut que j'essaye ça ! MERCI !!!
love the engineer thinking...thank you.
Thank you for figuring this out and posting it here, can't wait to try it.
Aleisa Duley, I hope it works for you.
Thank you so much! Will definitely try this... Appreciate your detailed explanation...
You’re awesome!! Great video, can’t wait to try this. Trimming has always been difficult for me - probably because I have been trying the “random tapping” technique and it just made no sense to me. Thanks so much!
I hope this works for you. Random tapping doesn't make sense to me either. Maybe I'm missing something, (I was probably too harsh in the video about it. ) I guess I just need a better explanation as to how that works.
Terrific instructions. Can't wait to try it. Thanks!
Ineresting dance ! Thank you !
The timing tip was very helpful! Thanks.
Thank you very much!
I see you have only made a few videos. I wish you made more, because this is very helpful!
Winona, you are very kind. I've been pretty busy these days and haven't been in the studio much. Hopefully some day....
I can’t wait to try this method. My music skills might even help. Thank you!
I've been trying to tap center for months... and thanks to your technique I finally succeed! Thanks a lot for sharing your method, it's an amazing one.
I'm very glad it helped you.
Best example of this technique I've seen! Thanks!
this is the best video on youtube
Thank you!
Genius!
Thanks for this 🙏
THANKKYOUUUU
OHHH!! This actually connects with me. Okay will try :) hoping it works out, thank you!
THANK YOU
Great idea, can't wait to try it.
this is amazing
This is brilliant! Thank you!
Great
Hi Robert, thank you for this method you've developed. I've got a class tonight, and I'll give it at try and let you know how it goes.
Very helpful video. I'd like to see how you trim as well. I've tried working without lumps of clay as anchors, but stopped after having the piece fly off the wheel a few times. Thanks for posting this one.
Louise Slater Simon Leach has an interesting idea using a piece of non skid shelf liner.

Very precise directions, thank you.
Fantastic!!
haha! so good. thanks
Question: why do you change the counting? Why not always staying at 2 or 3? But not both?
I think I understand your question. Every time you tap, you have to reset the timing because you have changed when and where it touches your left hand thumb. I have to let it touch 2 or 3 times until I am reasonably confident I have the rhythm right for the next tap. If I were more coordinated I could do it the same every time.
Robert Vance I love your way of communicating and your modesty..
PLEASE , How fast does the poter's wheel go ? Maximum speed?
The speed is not critical to the method. The count is based on the touch. I use about 1 revolution per second, but only because that is about as slow as I can feel a rhythm. Faster is fine, but things can get out of control
@@robertvance4362 Merci beaucoup ! J'y suis un peu arrivée alors que jamais auparavant. 😊
Want to buy one. Where I can get & how much is the cost?
Jayram Pal what do you want to buy?
Thank you!
You are very welcome. I hope it helps.
Thank you so much!!!
