Yahweh El Elyon is one of the Hebrew names of God. it means Yahweh God Most High or the Most High God.
In the Old Testament, we read about the Israelites having their God and the other nations having other gods that they worshipped. It is interesting to note that the surrounding nations knew that there was a difference between their gods and the God of Israel. As we shall see the God of Israel was called the Most High. He is the God of the followers of Jesus Christ.
To understand the meaning of the name the Most High, it is important to understand what the Bible means when talking about gods and sons of God.
So we'll start by seeing what gods the Bible is talking about.
In Genesis chapter 6 we read about the sons of God.
Gen 6:1-2 NET 1 When humankind began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose.
In this case, the sons of God are the disobedient angels who left their habitation in Heaven and came to the earth.
We also read:
Deuteronomy 10:17 WEB For Yahweh your God, he is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awesome, who doesn’t respect persons or take bribes.
Yahweh is referred to as the God of gods or Elohim of elohim. Elohim with capital E refers to Yahweh. When the e is in lower case it refers to divine beings such as angels. These are intelligent beings that were created directly by God Yahweh.
Adam is also referred to as a son of God probably for the same reason as we see in
Luke 3:38 KJV Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Gods with small g and sons of God seem to be alternative references to divine beings created by Yahweh.
In Psalm 82 we see that Yahweh presides over and judges the gods (divine beings).
Psalm 82:1 WEB God presides in the great assembly. He judges among the gods.
In verse 6 we read:
Psalm 82:6 WEB I said, “You are gods, all of you are sons of the Most High.
As mentioned earlier the divine beings are called gods and also the sons of the Most High. We shall see later that the Most High is a reference to Yahweh.
To distinguish Yahweh from other gods, we read:
Psalm 97:9 WEB For you, Yahweh, are most high above all the earth. You are exalted far above all gods.
This confirms Yahweh is above all other gods.
