I’m sorry to tell you that at the time of the Roseberry Street gig, Paul McCartney was in his back garden on a roof watching a police dog show taking place in the fields behind his home on Forthlin Road. Mike McCartney confirms this. There is even footage of the dog show and in the distance you can make out a group of lads perched on a roof watching the show in the garden of what would have been 20 Forthlin Road (if you would like to see this footage, please message me) and this would have been Paul, Mike and a couple of friends. Therefore the person in the photo is not Paul.

The year I was born, 1957. I was lucky to grow up in the fertile, nascent, musical climate that incubated the greatest band ever. It is worth being this old, for that alone. I appreciate the amount of reverence and enthusiasm that you have put into this documentary of an historic meeting. Thank you!
It’s always astounded me that these two people of such immense talent just happen to live near each other, just happen to meet and oh, Paul happened to know this young classmate who could play a mean guitar!
There is no such thing as a ‘random’ coincidence. Something, fate, destiny, give it whatever name you want, arranges tests, challenges and events in our lives. We very likely have free will, McCartney could have decided he didn’t want to associate with someone smelling of beer, but from our own experiences, I’d bet we can all tell of times when we wanted to do something, but were being overwhelmingly ‘persuaded’ by whatever to take a different course of action, that ends up being one of the best things you could have done. That’s life. We don’t know why.

I read an interview where John mentioned that he’d seen Paul “around” even before the famous Woolton village fete and thought him interesting or something. It really surprised me to see that because I’d no idea that John noticed Paul. We know that Paul noticed HIM before the fete, Paul’s mentioned it several times. So that photo of “mystery Paul” could very well be Paul and John might’ve even noticed him there.
Other way around. Paul had seen John around and on the bus and thought he looked cool. I think the photo could be right because he would have known to bring his guitar the next time to play and impress and join the band.

What an excellent piece and IMO its spot on as I am very familiar with all these locations being raised in Hunts Cross which is the next district to Woolton. Just behind the church hall is Woolton cinema which I visited regular during the 1970's and behind the cinema in the White Horse pub which my 87 year old dad is its most regular drinker during the past 30 years, we were having a few pints together there only 3 weeks ago.
....and the next district to Hunts Cross is Speke - where I was born & brought up, close to Western Avenue where Paul lived before Forthlin Road. I also visited Woolton Cinema a lot - small world eh? Nice to meet you on here! What an excellent presentation of what must have taken a lot of time & research, and such enthusiasm you don't get to see often these days.

Enjoyed your video. Was in the Church Hall two weeks ago, after we’d taken in the National Trust’s Childhood Homes tour - both very memorable. We also, by chance, attended the 60th Anniversary Fete in 2007, when remaining members of the Quarrymen performed in the Church Hall grounds. Holy ground indeed. New centre at Strawberry Field also well worth the visit, especially the memorial garden and Sgt. Pepper Bandstand. Great staff, cafe and gift shop. Love your enthusiasm, keep up the good work. I think the Danny Boyle film, ‘Yesterday’, partly answers your question about what things might have been like had Paul not met John that day.
Very well researched. You can't ask John or Ivan but perhaps Paul can be approached. If he'd seen The Quarrymen perform the week before and been sufficiently impressed to mention it to his friend Ivan, which triggered the Woolton introduction, then you'd expect him to have a memory of it. However, if not, most 15 year old boys could remember how they generally spent their Saturdays/Saturday afternoons (wasn't interested in football like most his age). The answer might be "No, I'd never have cycled over to Toxteth" or "Yeah, I did that once/sometimes" then perhaps his mind would be jogged by that photograph. I'm fascinated to know who owns that photo now. Have any of Johns 1950's friends been asked if they'd ever seen Paul around before the Woolton Fete date? Whoever that was on his bike looked a bit posh for Toxteth and would have stood out in a crowd. My apologies to Toxteth, no offense meant. Excellent video. Liked and new Subscriber here.
99.999% of people would recognise themselves in a photograph; even one from over 60 years ago. Paul could end the speculation once and for all. Incidentally, I guess it'd be impossible to pinpoint the 1st meeting of Paul & George who became best friends around the mid 1950s. Wikipedia dates it as being 1954, the year George would've started the Liverpool Institute, with Paul already in his 2nd year. I read somewhere that the catalyst that made them notice one another on the school bus was George's guitar. But I don't believe George had his 1st guitar till around 1956, as popular music was changing around that time, more than it was in 1954, for George to want one.
So, there's another idea for a video... we know that we'll never know the actual date that Paul & George met on the bus to school... BUT WHAT YEAR WAS IT?????
Well done, Poirot. You're absolutely right. Paul was (and still is) a 'go getter' and, in the tiny world of Scouse skiffle, would have heard of a joinable band like the Quarrymen, would have checked them out, and would have talked Ivan into introducing them. As far as Lennon knew, the fete was their first contact, and that's how he would have told it. Paul has always stuck by John's version, or perhaps didn't want to own up to 'stalking' John. When he describes that second gig in 'Anthology' as being on a truck, he's actually describing the first gig. Well done, mate: that is definitely Paul in the photo, not that I knew him; I didn't shuffle into Greenbank Park until 05/12/1965 (bonus kudos if you can name the Beatle significance of THAT date), but I did get my first haircut at Bioletti's on Penny Lane, and (so I'm told) once made sandcastles with Heather on Praia da Luz (where my Mum's from).

Thank you 😊. The mic is a small DJI wireless lavalier mic stuffed into a standard mic cradle atop an extendable (but retracted) boom pole. A little unorthodox admittedly. If you’re shooting outdoors(as I frequently do) it’s perfect for two things … cutting out wind noise and cutting out ambient noise. They’re meant to clip on to your collar but it loses some quality when you do that in my opinion. Tez 😊

Just found this video, long-time subscriber (sort of). On the date of that momentous and historic meeting, I was about 1 1/2 years old. I would not be aware of the Beatles til some years later, of course (probably aged 8 or 9). HUGE Beatles fan ever since! Loved this remarkable quest you took, Tez, to recreate that magical day. And, for the record, I believe that was Paul straddling his bike in that photo.

Apparently JPM was making waves about JFK being offed, and because he had global popularity and reach, he was warned off first with a baseball bat shampoo just as he was "falling off his moped". Then finally offed because he ignored the warning... JPM is long gone. How and why I have no idea, only conjecture. But gone for sure. Have at it all you Paul apologists....
Wonderful video. It's so sad that the stage at the church is nothing more than a waste dump now. You think it would have been preserved given the success of the Beatles. I actually visited Woolton Church on a trip from America in 2010. It was very humbling to be there, knowing what had happened on that spot.
Great article. I'm a huge Beatles fan since childhood, everything they touched seemed to turn to gold - even the hallowed ground spots mentioned in this article. I visited the Beatle places in 1991 including St Peters church that has the headstone for Eleanor Rigby, although apparently that stone wasn't the influence for the song of the same name. The Beatles story has almost a Devine theme starting in the lowly Cavern club to the most glittering heights of fame and glory. Its not even about the fortunes made between them, it was the legend that they are in rock n roll folklore. I have liked this article with a 👍 🙂
Hi mate, as a lifelong Beatles obsessive, (and a Liverpool immigrant), I adored your video.... Awesome detective work 👋 I wanted to say 2 things... Firstly, you didn't mention the bricks that are still there and I thought they looked in exactly the same position as the original wall around the stage. Is this because you could see they were a modern addition? And secondly, as a musician who has had several left handed guitarists in my band lineup, I think Paul took his guitar everywhere with him because it's a nightmare playing upside down on anyone else's guitar and he wouldn't be able to show anyone how good he was on a borrowed 'normal' right handed guitar. I think that's why he usually carried it about with him. Awesome video my friend ❤

According to Rod Davis, McCartney played Lennons guitar upside down, rather than having his own guitar there...and why would he take a guitar to someone else's gig?
I think John and Paul were about 15 and 16 years old when they met and it's amazing to think that they would have conquered the world in less than 8 years from that point.
Actually, Paul didn't have his guitar with him that fateful day that he met John. By his own account, he played guitar upside down - meaning he borrowed John's guitar and flipped it over so he could play in the left handed manner to which he was accustomed. In the same interview, Paul says he wasn't put off by John's beer soaked breath - it was just something he noticed.

There was a large publicity photo of McCartney wearing glasses in the window of a local record shop around the time of Revolver. That was something I remember to this day. Struck me as kind of weird. Maybe he was doing his Buddy Holly impression?
Its really a shame that much of the original location has been altered to the point that you wouldn't even know what it used to be. I wish that the original site would have been preserved and somehow legally protected.

At 6:10 the ears do not match up to the overlay! I do not believe that guy is Paul one bit and it is silly!

Enjoyed your video. Was in the Church Hall two weeks ago, after we’d taken in the National Trust’s Childhood Homes tour - both very memorable. We also, by chance, attended the 60th Anniversary Fete in 2007, when remaining members of the Quarrymen performed in the Church Hall grounds. Holy ground indeed. New centre at Strawberry Field also well worth the visit, especially the memorial garden and Sgt. Pepper Bandstand. Great staff, cafe and gift shop. Love your enthusiasm, keep up the good work. I think the Danny Boyle film, ‘Yesterday’, partly answers your question about what things might have been like had Paul not met John that day.

Very well researched. You can't ask John or Ivan but perhaps Paul can be approached.
If he'd seen The Quarrymen perform the week before and been sufficiently impressed to mention it to his friend Ivan, which triggered the Woolton introduction, then you'd expect him to have a memory of it.
However, if not, most 15 year old boys could remember how they generally spent their Saturdays/Saturday afternoons (wasn't interested in football like most his age).
The answer might be "No, I'd never have cycled over to Toxteth" or "Yeah, I did that once/sometimes" then perhaps his mind would be jogged by that photograph.
I'm fascinated to know who owns that photo now.
Have any of Johns 1950's friends been asked if they'd ever seen Paul around before the Woolton Fete date? Whoever that was on his bike looked a bit posh for Toxteth and would have stood out in a crowd. My apologies to Toxteth, no offense meant.

99.999% of people would recognise themselves in a photograph; even one from over 60 years ago. Paul could end the speculation once and for all. Incidentally, I guess it'd be impossible to pinpoint the 1st meeting of Paul & George who became best friends around the mid 1950s. Wikipedia dates it as being 1954, the year George would've started the Liverpool Institute, with Paul already in his 2nd year. I read somewhere that the catalyst that made them notice one another on the school bus was George's guitar. But I don't believe George had his 1st guitar till around 1956, as popular music was changing around that time, more than it was in 1954, for George to want one.
So, there's another idea for a video... we know that we'll never know the actual date that Paul & George met on the bus to school... BUT WHAT YEAR WAS IT?????

Well done, Poirot. You're absolutely right. Paul was (and still is) a 'go getter' and, in the tiny world of Scouse skiffle, would have heard of a joinable band like the Quarrymen, would have checked them out, and would have talked Ivan into introducing them. As far as Lennon knew, the fete was their first contact, and that's how he would have told it. Paul has always stuck by John's version, or perhaps didn't want to own up to 'stalking' John. When he describes that second gig in 'Anthology' as being on a truck, he's actually describing the first gig. Well done, mate: that is definitely Paul in the photo, not that I knew him; I didn't shuffle into Greenbank Park until 05/12/1965 (bonus kudos if you can name the Beatle significance of THAT date), but I did get my first haircut at Bioletti's on Penny Lane, and (so I'm told) once made sandcastles with Heather on Praia da Luz (where my Mum's from).

The family and I all vote that this is indeed a photo of Paul watching The Quarrymen. It might be a challenge for any octogenarian to accurately describe what is happening in a photo taken during their teens, but it probably wouldn't hurt to forward a copy to Paul's office and see if he wants to take a look and comment : )

Thank you 😊. The mic is a small DJI wireless lavalier mic stuffed into a standard mic cradle atop an extendable (but retracted) boom pole. A little unorthodox admittedly. If you’re shooting outdoors(as I frequently do) it’s perfect for two things … cutting out wind noise and cutting out ambient noise. They’re meant to clip on to your collar but it loses some quality when you do that in my opinion. Tez 😊
Your enthusiasm and displayed pride of something in history is amazingly refreshing, in this current day. It amazingly (almost) brought a tear to this Englishman's eye. A deep thank you for your sharing of this. Ive already seen (almost) everything Beatles, but this is right at the top.

Just found this video, long-time subscriber (sort of). On the date of that momentous and historic meeting, I was about 1 1/2 years old. I would not be aware of the Beatles til some years later, of course (probably aged 8 or 9). HUGE Beatles fan ever since! Loved this remarkable quest you took, Tez, to recreate that magical day. And, for the record, I believe that was Paul straddling his bike in that photo.

Wonderful video. It's so sad that the stage at the church is nothing more than a waste dump now. You think it would have been preserved given the success of the Beatles. I actually visited Woolton Church on a trip from America in 2010. It was very humbling to be there, knowing what had happened on that spot.

Great article. I'm a huge Beatles fan since childhood, everything they touched seemed to turn to gold - even the hallowed ground spots mentioned in this article.
I visited the Beatle places in 1991 including St Peters church that has the headstone for Eleanor Rigby, although apparently that stone wasn't the influence for the song of the same name. The Beatles story has almost a Devine theme starting in the lowly Cavern club to the most glittering heights of fame and glory.
Its not even about the fortunes made between them, it was the legend that they are in rock n roll folklore. I have liked this article with a 👍 🙂

Hi mate, as a lifelong Beatles obsessive, (and a Liverpool immigrant), I adored your video.... Awesome detective work 👋
I wanted to say 2 things... Firstly, you didn't mention the bricks that are still there and I thought they looked in exactly the same position as the original wall around the stage. Is this because you could see they were a modern addition? And secondly, as a musician who has had several left handed guitarists in my band lineup, I think Paul took his guitar everywhere with him because it's a nightmare playing upside down on anyone else's guitar and he wouldn't be able to show anyone how good he was on a borrowed 'normal' right handed guitar. I think that's why he usually carried it about with him.

I think John and Paul were about 15 and 16 years old when they met and it's amazing to think that they would have conquered the world in less than 8 years from that point.

Actually, Paul didn't have his guitar with him that fateful day that he met John. By his own account, he played guitar upside down - meaning he borrowed John's guitar and flipped it over so he could play in the left handed manner to which he was accustomed. In the same interview, Paul says he wasn't put off by John's beer soaked breath - it was just something he noticed.

There was a large publicity photo of McCartney wearing glasses in the window of a local record shop around the time of Revolver. That was something I remember to this day. Struck me as kind of weird. Maybe he was doing his Buddy Holly impression?

Its really a shame that much of the original location has been altered to the point that you wouldn't even know what it used to be. I wish that the original site would have been preserved and somehow legally protected.
I think the Casbah Club is the only truly "authentic" Beatles "relic" that still exists as it used to.
