Some things I’d say even lower on the iceberg are -Out of band units and designators -Chinese and russian LAMs -new tube specs such as hypergating and supergain -native thermal fusion NVGs
Oh, man! Thank you for sharing this! Seriously… great items. My knowledge is “limited” at best but I tried with this iceberg, knowing that you guys would come through with more awesome suggestions! In all honesty, my main hope with this video was that it could potentially reach people who aren’t necessarily into night vision and then attract them further into it with some interesting facts/thoughts. I knew that my level of knowledge wasn’t cut for a true 1hr+ video with deeper levels, geared for people with way more experience than I currently have. Perhaps a part 2 would be worthwhile in the future but either way… thanks again!
0:55 No, actually some do. Some older PVS 14 and PVS 18s I was issued would make this sound when you loaded it up with a lithium ion battery that was almost dead. The sound was very quiet, but it most definitely was there
Woah! That really is news to me. Thanks for sharing. The only noise-related thing that I’ve heard of is a problem where some units make a constant “whining” sound but not anything like the cliche night vision noise! It’s kind of risky to make an iceberg video about a topic where I’m not truly a professional, so I figured that I’d give it a good shot but ultimately not get everything 100% correct and ultimately a lot in here consists of opinions/general thoughts or my own experience. Glad to hear of your experience and it’s a good point to make!
I remember seeing "Night Vision" in the toy section of Walmart when I was about 8. I thought the $75 price tag was an incomprehensibly large amount of money and I would never afford it. Funny how perceptions change considering what I paid for my PVS-14 LOL Gotta love the footage here and seeing the fireflies! Great video and very informative for the newly initiated! P.S. What laser/IR setup do you recommend?
I still remember the time I had a whopping $14 as a kid and thought I was basically rich! A guy at work and I were talking about childhood last night and he brought up the snack treat called “Gushers”, from way back during childhood times. Haven’t been able to stop thinking about those snacks since then, haha! Talking about night vision toys in stores… I wonder if they still have them? I may have to look out of curiosity! I actually never had experience with them but I bet that I’d still have enjoyed them as a kid. I appreciate the support and really like seeing your success here/on your channel! I can’t say that I “recommend” my laser setup (due to it basically being one of the cheapest options and essentially choosing it for that reason alone) but I can say that I’m impressed with it, considering the cost. It’s the Holosun LS321 and I haven’t even shot with it (yet)! I’ve only really used it for training with my Mantis Blackbeard, so I can’t really speak to the lasers ability to hold zero under recoil. This video shows me using the laser but it was recorded during an ultimately unsuccessful coyote hunt and I still wasn’t able to take a shot. If budget isn’t much of a concern, I’m pretty confident in recommending the MAWL. I’m under the impression that’s about as good as you can easily get with civilian credentials. Other than that, a full-power laser is what everyone wants but those are still expensive and more difficult to find! There are a ton of options though and the SomoGear products out of China have been making some buzz lately due to them being so cheap and allegedly having “full-power” lasers. Emphasis on “cheap”, though. Have a good one, man
@@UrbanSurvivor Which reminds me of another video I’m working on right now 😁 also reminds me of when I get to watch your videos, haha! I really do appreciate the support & hope all is well!
My L3 unfilmed tube actually does make that little splinter cell whine noise when you turn it on haha. But it’s more like a humming sound, and it thankfully only does it for a second or two and only on the first cold start of the night haha. It’s cool I like it
I've been saving for a quite some time to get my own NODs (on USN pay...not fun), but it's looking like I'm a month or two away from being able to pull the trigger. I've been geeking out with researching housings, tubes, blah blah blah, and this guide was awesome. Definitely a lot here to look into, and a great video overall! P.S. I'm planning to get a Tanto with an Elbit WP tube.
Some other stuff that most people who buy a pvs14 straight away won't know about -Earlier devices, particularly most gen 1 / 0 devices DO make that high pitched whine when the power supply is on, running somewhere around the 16kv mark -Most consumer grade gen 1 night vision all use the exact same image intensifier (ep33 / v8) -Gen 1 cascade tubes offer gen 2 performance -"Radioactive" soviet night vision being a myth by US manufacturers to discourage people from buying soviet made devices after the wall fell -The PNV series of night vision devices, and the sheer number of variants of it -Bioc units -Completely DIY units -ITAR -Night vision industry and devices outside of the US Also, the process you mention at around the 16:00 mark only applies to Gen 3 GaAs photocathode tubes. Little of this is the same for gen 2, 1, 0, etc tubes which do still make up a large portion of tubes available on the market
Haha loving this video as I am a few months into my NVG Journey. The blems vs black spots explanation was quite helpful. I would say there are 2 levels of helmets/accessories. One is built before you get your nvg cause you want a bump and you plan to get nvg eventually. This is done for cool factor. The other level is the true helm setup you build with your task light, arc rails, ear pro, etc
You’re so right! Thanks a ton for the feedback and I couldn’t agree more about the helmet setups. Welcome to night vision, haha! Sounds like it’s been a productive few months regardless because you’re obviously well-informed! Have a good one!
Great video packed with lots of knowledge, I appreciate what it took to put this together. I’m at the cusp of getting that vision myself and this video helped clarify, some of the miss information I have come across.
One note on the startup whine. It did actually exist on quite old IRNV for optics. The game sound is quite exaggerated but old systems would charge capacitors using a HV transformer, kind of like pre-led flash cameras, and they do indeed have a startup charge whine
Freakin’ FDA, man. It’s obvious that the LS321 I’m using in this video is, well, an LS321 lol. Thanks for sharing! I’m still learning all of this stuff and appreciate the transfer of knowledge.
awesome vid! i expected this be more like a meme iceberg video where you start from pvs 14 and end up with lesser know units like pnvg, who is ed wilcox and legend of gen 4 night vision (if you havent read the legend of gen 4 night vision you should look into that, how gen4 nv was reclassifed as gen 3 filmless)
Oh, man! I knew that this would be a perk of making this video (having other people who know of awesome “iceberg”-style topics that should be included in such a video)! That’s another thing that I haven’t learned about yet but will research tonight! Thanks for bringing that up and supporting! This is super interesting!
Oh man those ape defense ones look cool! I do wonder if the cheap filter that I use as a sacrificial lens on my “DIY” iris blocks some light from coming in that would have otherwise. I need to test that! Should be easy enough to test the iris with and without the sacrificial lens to see how different it looks. Surprised I haven’t tried that yet! I’m not sure if it’s the case but I bet those more expensive iris setups use very clear/transparent lenses.
Now I have to look up videos to hopefully find one that shows not only the rattle/hum of the night vision but also the sound of a Model T! I’ve seen some of those “T-bucket” kit cars in person which are fascinating and I’ve also used the old “model T” cars at Six Flags that they let kids drive around a track with rails, haha! I can’t say that I’ve ever really heard a real model T though. Thanks for sharing! Someone else here in the comments said that they used night vision before that actually does make a sound similar to the cliche night vision sound, when they would use old/nearly dead batteries in the unit!
And here I literally thought that sound was exclusively from a video game! Bizarre but awesome and I guess goes to show that these tubes really are all kinda unique. Thanks for sharing
I’m only now learning that this happens with some devices! You aren’t alone, either. A few people have already reported the same thing here. Interesting! Thanks for bringing that up and supporting those other reports. I need to hear this sound!
Debunking a debunk, while nvgs dont make the sound from splinter cell, they actually make a weird sound when powering on. Like a dog whistle, not everyone can hear it, but I definitely can. Personal experience includes hundreds of hours on 31s, and a little time with 15s and a singular use of a 14. Not a night vision expert at all, but I have used them a lot.
I really appreciate you sharing. I haven’t heard any such sound but you’re definitely correct and not alone! There have been more than a few people here who report the same thing! That’s a lot of time that you have racked up under these things. Awesome!
@@DontDoDaylightoh God I hate to say it but.... You almost definitely have hearing loss. High pitched sounds like that are the first to go. All night vision, relying on high voltages, makes that "splinter cell" sound to a degree. The game massively exaggerated it, But it's there due to the nature of generating such a high voltage. It's the same concept behind the buzz of florescent or neon lights.
With the couple of people who have said this along with you, I NEED to hear it! I’m actually going to look it up. I’m learning! Thanks & have a good one.
Great iceberg video, nice field of knowledge and clear explanation. One problem: Where the biocular section. Also one big deep iceberg I think personally is ITAR, and subsequently people realising that foreign nvd are a thing as well.
The new psq-42s that the army issued out do make a sound, a very quiet one, but its a high pitched whirring sound like a disc spinning that progressevely faster before going quiet again shortly after
Woah, man! Apparently there are more than a few examples of this and I appreciate the info! Something like the psq-42 would have been a great entry on the iceberg on its own!
I own a Gen 3 14 white phos and I was already thinking about getting into dual tubes 😅 but then when I went down the rabbit hole.. I saw the thermal clip on and was like.. okay.. I think that money will be better spent on predator vision 😅😅 I'd just like to know if these clip on run the risk of burning an image on my tube if used for long periods of time or if they can get too bright.
It’s funny you mention that because I have had the exact same thought! Admittedly, I need to do more research about clip-ons in general. I have no idea about that! Now, you have me thinking of whether I’d rather have dual-tubes or a COTI (clip-on thermal imager)… I must agree with you about that! Thank you for supporting! You bring up a great point!
@Don’t Do Daylight yea bro, I had gone to two dealers to check two different sets of duals, one white and one green, both gen 3. But there was a huge difference in price from white and green and also the green had a few spots on the left tube. So I was facing the choice of spending less and getting green duals with some spots on the left tube.. vs just drop big money and get white duals with a small spot on zone 3 that wasn't so noticeable on both tubes. Then I finally out about clip on 😍😍😍😍 I also have to do my research because I don't want to buy something that expensive that can potentially damage my expensive 14 😅😅 But the idea of buying a clip on gives me way more capability on my 14 and another optic that would fit it. Loving the Chanel, keep it up.👏👏👏
My concern with a COTI is the same. I have a super sensitive L3 20UA tube and I get burn streaks just from porch lights. I really want a COTI but I am scared of permanently burning my tube...
A COTI will not burn your tube unless you have it turned up way too high. The COTI has a warning symbol that flashes in your NV when you have it turned up too high. You would just about have to be an idiot to burn your tube with a COTI.
I made a night vision countermeasure that uses a high power IR laser that puts out a dot matrix. Even blinds security cameras, and it only costs 50$. Everyone should have one!
