It'll be nice if Korg had something like the "Volca Piano". All black case like the Volca Kick that not produces DSP piano sounds but also Rhodes, Clav et al.
Does it not have a sequencer? If so you could step record the notes you want to create custom arpeggios I’ve done this on the Volca modular and it works quite well.
I have to give Korg a lot of respect for doing what YAMAHA SHOULD HAVE DONE. Bring the classic 6 OP FM sound into the 21ST CENTURY. And you can carry these around anywhere. Not so easy with the old DX7. Also you can now do FM filter style sweeps WOW. Eventually I will own three of these. My DX7 recently died. And this is what I have been waiting for. Add a decent controller keyboard. And let the legend begin.
Played with this lovely synth-y thing-y yesterday at a friend's and I really enjoyed it, even though I only scratched the surface of its capabilities. Not disappointed at all. Good job, Mr. Korg.

Wait. Wait. Do you see how FM synthesis works? It starts off a fundamental generator, which is then pitch shifted to create the modulators. It would be more complex, but in principle there's no reason why arbitrary sound source couldn't be used as an input. In other words, creation of FM pedal is possible, even of nobody has so far been arsed to do it. Plus it couldn't have been done in the 80ies.
My favorite Korg instruments are: DSS-1, DS-8, DW-8000, M1, Wavestation, and the T-series. All of them were dream to have. The Volcas have fantastic sound engines, and great aesthetics to. Sort of reminiscent of the VHS tape sized QY10 sequencer. Now, to have a Volca in 5-octave keyboard form factor would be so exciting. Something like the DS-8 reissue with Volca FM synth engine, with at least 8 voices of polyphony, velocity keyboard, and aftertouch. Ah, nice to dream...

I think I need this. I am low income and can't afford to spend hundreds or thousands on a synth. For under $200; this is something I can save up my pennies for. Since it does MIDI I can plug it in to my Yamaha or RadioShack MIDI keyboards to get a nice 61 key keyboard to use. I love that it has a built in sequencer and arpeggiator.

The only thing we are missing is how to backup the patches created on the Volca FM without buying another one. I've tried recording the ouput from the sync jack, but it doesn't seem to work when I play it back into the Volca FM.

Not saying anything nasty but why do these people still manufacture monophonic or 2,3 voices synths. Not saying the synths are bad or you cannot do anthing with it but with such low polyphony, with the exception of basslines or efx or may be a solo lead, for me its very very limited and a serious disadvantage, also consider it as not a so good investment. The 6 operators and 32 algorithms is excellent though unlike some simulated fm synths especially software synths with only 4 ops and just 8 routing algos.
Manfred klaus you can get 2 volca FM and chain them together for 6 voices and it's still cheap as fuck so stop moaning ..if you want something more you need to pay little bit more...there is no real arguing point in this price range about the volca FM but yes some people like you gonna complain about anything...so like a said want more voices pay more
Manfred klaus I'm kinda considering getting this not as an instrument, but a learning tool. You can always replicate patches on VSTs and get more flexibility that way. But this piece of hardware seems to make the steep learning curve (of fm) much easier.

The FM2 will send sequence MIDI, but not arpeggiator MIDI.
