Thanks so much for these Oun. They are really simple and helpful. I especially love how you keep your heart in Cambodia while stepping outside the culture to interpret it better for us. I've shared your channel on our volunteer page. Everyday I am enjoying Cambodia so much.
Thank you for your video! We just spent three weeks in Cambodia and absolutely LOVED every minute and cannot wait to return. We went to PP, Siem Reap/Angkor, Kep/Kampot/Rabbit, Koh Rong, and just a night in Sihanoukville. Three weeks was definitely NOT enough time to see all we wanted in Cambodia. We have shared a lot of our travel photos with friends, and now they are also interested in visiting this beautiful country. Akun! - Kerri
Amazing, thank you so much, you are very informative and speak from the heart. My wife and I will be entering Cambodia tomorrow, watching your videos has been very helpful... Peace S&D
I know this video was made a long time ago, and i commented on it 8 years ago. Today i watch it again and it brings me recomfort. I hope you are doing well and i regret to meet people online that i wished i could meet in real.
Glad to have stumbled across your video, going to use your other videos to educate myself on language and culture while we're here for a month 😁 thank you
Thank you so very much for all of your helpful videos. My children and I will be visiting Cambodia at the end of this year. My daughter is originally from the Nutrient Center, it's been 25+ years since she left there. Aloha! Keith
Very interesting thankyou .if i ever go to Cambodia i will make sure i respect things you mention here,i am however looking forward to having the freedom to slurp my soup.
The parts about cultural eating manner don'ts and do's are equally the same in Japan. I think it's probably the same in every part of Asia. :) Same about slurping soup and so on.
I hate eating with other people. In Thailand they want to eat with you and then make fun of you or talk shit to you about being a foreigner, but if you go eat by yourself, they get even madder.
thank you for this video! I have experienced that people that loks older than me, "sneak" at the ATM, and the supermarket like it was natural. T is not natural for me, but thank you for telling me why the elderly can go and passthe cue. :-)
Can you help me out. Im Mexican and started dating a Cambodian man. Give me some tips. How Cambodian man are ? What do they like? What to do and what not to do . How do I act towards his family when I meet them. Help me please
The reason most american families do not eat together is because most of america in my opinion are not as well mannered and in touch with their roots as a lot of more cultural countries and your right it is sad. I envy Cambodia and other places for those kind of small things.
nono Agreed and also we didn't like their last president or the one before either. The current one is far too hung up on his stupid "America first" policy. The US is totally ignoring the facts that these are global socieoeconomic times. There is a lot more to this world than just the US.
Interesting info and thank you but the pace was slow. I think you could have covered more topics by being better organized. Looking forward to my trip and certainly better prepared for listening to you.
+Putins Cat Well, I don't know about Khmer, but for Thais, whose customs are very similar, kissing someone you love or care about on the forehead is OK, and is even seen as a sign of deep respect (i.e. boyfriend / girlfriend or parent / child). There are always exceptions to every rule.
lee world Okay I agree. But this is MY CULTURE! What the hell are u rumbling about? 1. It is BAD manners. 2. I am keeping my norms for my own people by correcting this flawed video.
Okay people! Firstly, let's get something cleared up. Burping, slurping, and chewing with mouth wide open is definitely NOT A NORM! Even most of the country folks will be horrified with manners like that. You DO NOT want to be called a "tmill" and doing those things will get you funny faces in most of the country. Secondly, although she did a pretty good job, there are alot of missing informations as I can tell she had a bit of different raising than most Khmers. I am not saying it to her down but this lack of information can be quite miss leading to those outside of the cultural settings.
Have you thought about re-recording this video? You seem very tired and at some points incoherent. Probably a very tired mom! But you could probably make it half as long and much more concise.
You're totally wrong about the eating part! Khmer tradition doesn't allow you to eat with your mouth wide open, chewing loudly, slurping, or burping. It's consider highly rude, people may think you're from a family that have no manners. You're going to get frown upon with that kind of eating ettiquet. I don't know where you were raised, but in my family it's a no-no. Please do some research on Khmer traditions first before you post it on youtube.
I'm Khmer and I hate it when people in general eat with their mouth open or SMACKING their food. Very disrespectful and it's like showing yourself as a low class person with very low level of educations or no manners at all in my opinion. Khmer people are like any other race, when it comes to manners and education level. Educated Khmer people don't eat with their mouth open nor smacking their food. And this is the truth. And what I meant by educated I meant middle class Khmer families and or parents that teaches their kids the proper way of how Khmer people culture and do things.
I agree with you. Eating with your mouth open, slurping soup and burping are all unpleasant sounds. I think that the model to follow is the Buddhist monks. They eat quietly.
Suo s day! Your vedios are really helpful. I am learning Khmer through many ways, but only your teaching is vivid. I love your voice. I came to work in Stung Treng since last month. I met too many language barriers. I would stay in your country for several years maybe. I expect to learn more Khmer and know more about Cambodia. I love Cambodian. They are really simple and kind!
Thank you so much for the excellent video. I now understand why an old lady went straight to the front of the queue/line at the supermarket in PP. At the time, I thought how rude she was but now I feel bad for feeling that way. Aw kun oun!
It's similar to Thailand, but slurping n burping is considered as impolite. Also, don't sit with cross legs. Leaving some food behind is not advisable, basically in Asia. Instead, people would be happy if the guest could finish everything which means the foods are delicious.
I really appreciate the cultural do's and don'ts. Awkun! Any advice on what to wear and what would be an appropriate gift to show appreciation to say my guide or the people at the hotel? In okinawan culture usually candies or some type of food is offered. Would this be the same in Cambodia. We already have so many of the same customes!
Thank you for your video - I am going to viist Phnom Pen in a few months and really appreciate these videos. Is there an online chat to be able to practice?
You are such a sweet girl thank you Cambodia and Thai have a lot in common cultural which is not surprising as you were the same country till the french thai war of 1925 I think
Interesting information shared of Khmer culture, but some info are not accurate and can be misleading. SLURPING and BURPING is consider bad table manners and disrespect, and it's frown upon in Khmer culture. Just an FYI folks...

It is not a right. It's just out of respect. Just because I chose to stand up and let some old white or black lady sit, does not mean she has the right. I respect her as an elderly person and as if she is my mother.
im cambodian my self i'm not agree with you about slurping and burping is considered very rude in cambodia ,if you do it people would frown and think you are very gross.
10 years later, this is still a great help. Thank you!🙏

Thank you for being so clear and explaining a lot of the why behind the actions. Well done. God bless you.
A lot Americans eat alone, but many also eat with their families. America is very diverse culture. 🌺
thank you so much this helps me to help the girl who is coming to my school tomorrow from Cambodia
Great!
I’m watching a Khmer TV show called Airwaves right now, and some of the cultural stuff is making a lot more sense now. Thanks! Very cool!
Thank you for the very helpful tips on good manners! You are very charming and you explain well.

These are good customs. We have a lot to reflect on as far as how things used to be with many of of these principles.
Super interesting thanks and if you have more ideas like that please post
Thank you very much. That was very helpful. More please. Can you teach language also please. Read, write, speak. 🙂🤗
Very helpful. Thank you

Hey we the khasi tribes in meghalaya state India also practice some of these. There's similarities
Very helpful
It pisses me off when people cut me in line. They don't know how to wait for their turn even the educated looking people. But I like Cambodia still.
Can you help me out. Im Mexican and started dating a Cambodian man. Give me some tips. How Cambodian man are ? What do they like? What to do and what not to do . How do I act towards his family when I meet them. Help me please

American families do eat together if the parents are not working. If you have experience something different it is nothing more than poor parenting.
Great reply, Gabriel
define "cultural countries" lol... just remember the country that foreign countries hold in the highest regard- America
I don't think that foreign countries hold in the highest regard- America with Trump as president.
nono Agreed and also we didn't like their last president or the one before either. The current one is far too hung up on his stupid "America first" policy. The US is totally ignoring the facts that these are global socieoeconomic times. There is a lot more to this world than just the US.

For the burping and slurping is not corrected because it'a unpleasant for cambodian because i experienced it my self.

I like and appreciate the info but my Mom said burping is a no no and wasting food is a aaaahhh lol

Oh shit! I kissed a Khmer girl on the forehead recently..

i dont like it when anyone burps or slurps srs
Don't take her too seriously. I can tell u honestly that there are alot of incorrect and missing materials.
Chivand Thear

Albert Tan very interesting:) In my country its impolite to sit with legs open. Closed or crossed is considered proper in public.

Then how does dating work if want to meet a women there?
Harold Lewis hope you're white? If so it will go well for you.
It is not a right. It's just out of respect. Just because I chose to stand up and let some old white or black lady sit, does not mean she has the right. I respect her as an elderly person and as if she is my mother.

Hey
im cambodian my self i'm not agree with you about slurping and burping is considered very rude in cambodia ,if you do it people would frown and think you are very gross.
