There's a semi-serious flowchart for when to use tu or vous in French. One of the options is 'this person is your boss, but he just ticked you off and you want him to know it' -> tu
I had never thought to just use French second-person pronoun etiquette on this. I had noticed that Shakespeare was 'inconsistent', and not totally rigid to the grammatical Number (such as an archaic Bible would, I think, always be - except for a curious inversion (in RSV?) where God is always addressed in the Singular). This really works, just as soon as you dig. I suppose it was such a struggle just to get the declensions of this (or rather *these*) archaic form(s) clearly in the mind, and other usage notes like always qualifying an imperative with one or the other [in nominative]. : Thou · thy/thine · thee : Ye · your/yours · you
As a German, I like that this distinction has been a reality in English, too. The practice has been preserved in many languages, and it's neat to stumble upon it in Shakespeare :)
That's not entirely correct. Thou and thee are the same, they just change depending on wether it is the subject or the object of the sentence. Exactly like I and me, he and him, she and her. You would use it like: Thou love thee. I love me. He loves him. She loves her. (I know the sentences don't make sense, but its how it works)
Good question. Thou is used to address God because He is seen as the Father; He knows us better than anyone. So using Thou is in line with using the familiar pronoun to speak to someone you know well. In this context Thou is also capitalised to express respect for God. I hope that makes sense.
We always use "tú" in Spanish for prayers, the etymological equivalent of thou, because it is said that we are always supposed to talk to God in a familiar way like the way you would talk to your parents.

In 19th century hymns they use 'Thou' to address God as in, 'Thou who cameth from above'. Were they being inaccurate in their grammar?
