- Discreet Music is the fourth studio album by the British musician Brian Eno, and the first released under his full name (as opposed to simply "Eno"). The album is a minimalist work, with the titular A-side consisting of one 30-minute piece featuring synthesizer and tape delay.
The B-side features three variations on Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel, performed by the Cockpit Ensemble and conducted by Gavin Bryars.
While his earlier collaborations with Robert Fripp and several selections from Another Green World (1975) feature similar ideas, Discreet Music marked a clear step toward the ambient aesthetic Eno would later codify with 1978's Ambient 1: Music for Airports.

The first track on the original album was sublime beyond human expectation, but this stretched version is a journey into deeply spiritual territory. Awe inspiring!
Brian perfected the technique that many artists have tried to do for years.Steve Reich and Terry Riley started the process but Brian Eno made it work

Discreet music 1 & 2 were originally meant as backing tracks for Fripp to improvise over.
I can’t imagine what he would’ve played because it’s perfect as it is.
Check out the Fripp & Eno live in Paris album, the first track on disk 2 is Fripp doing just that. He sort of plays the same melody lines into a slow tape delay system.

This could be considered the first ambient work, when this term was not yet coined for the idea that Brian Eno wanted to assign to the particularity of music identifiable as environmental sound tapestry: the first official production will be Ambient 1: Music for Airports (1978). But Discret Music will anticipate by three years what will become in all respects the first pre-ambient cornerstone of the genre.
This dilated version has a further peculiarity in an environmentally extended direction.

Brian Eno is virtually unknown by people under 50. This is a travesty. Every composition of his, even the lyrical, wonky work, is blissful and perfect. He's a unsung musical hero.

I mean pitchfork just reviewed ambient 1 this week. He’s about as far from unsung as you get imho. Sure my kids would recognize talking heads before mlitbog but geez.
