      Yup, I came to the same conclusion. Why spend time so much time drawing cards in what is meant to be an aggressive deck. Risk Factor is more at home in a burn deck. If you are wanting to get draw from risk factor that should mean that your opponent is low enough that you would want to draw more burn anyways. Also I just find Radical Idea to be an underwhelming card in general. Even with Electromancer's cost reduction making it one cost it digs as deep as an opt can while costing a card in your hand. The reason to play it is just to up the spell count, but it needs even more payoff than a deck that is both playing Adeliz and Wee Dragonauts, which really shows its true colors. It is a slow card in an aggressive deck.

    • @AvatarOfDiablo
      @AvatarOfDiablo 6 років тому

      It's not as Magical Christmas Land-y as you'd expect, but you definitely have to play for it. It's a lot better for a Drakes/Phoenix deck than it is for this deck, since it plays double duty for Crackling Drakes and Phoenixes, whereas this deck largely doesn't care except the Phoenixes. Even then, Saffron Olive didn't always play correctly to make it worthwhile: in the first game, he could have waited on the Radical Idea to play the land and have 7 lands, then play and jump-start Radical Idea and then play Radical Idea to get back two Phoenixes. Not saying that would have saved him from his garbage draws, but he could have at least double-blocked the Chainwhirler to kill it and then hoped to make something back on the backswing.

      For matches where you need 4 toughness creatures. Wizards are very fragile, so if you're playing against a deck that has good removal for low power creatures (cast down, ritual of soot), the drakes make a better top end for this deck than Adelize or Dragonaughts. The UR Wizards and UR Drakes have a *ton* of cards in common, so its pretty easy to swap between the two.

    I completely agree that this deck needs more fast damage of some kind. It has 12 card draw spells plus risk factors and goblin electromancer which isn't really what you would consider an aggressive threat. 4 main board bolts is not enough to support the explosiveness the deck wants. Also WHY IS THERE MORE BLUE SOURCES THAN RED WHEN THE ONLY ONE DROP IS RED.

  • @KDiaz-hy1xx
    @KDiaz-hy1xx 6 років тому +3

    The point of the card draw spells (cantrips, really) is to let you cast multiple spells so you can bring back the Phoenix. You missed many opportunities to do that. Eletromancer is in there so they only cost 1U. Phoenix is your Lightening Strike. I would maybe get rid of the Opt for the surveil cantrip so you can dump the Phoenix for value.
    That sideboard is really bad. Negates need to go. You don’t want to counter anything-that’s not aggressive enough. And yes, it needs Cannonade.
    This deck seems like a kind of weird storm deck where you want to chain cantrips to trigger Adelize and recur Phoenix. I’m not saying that it’s better than just an aggressive tribal Wizards deck, but that you’ve misunderstood it.
    Edit: Maybe the negate is there to jank ‘em out, actually. Lay your threats down, be patient, and storm off with negate backup? Something like that?

    I was playing this deck on arena as soon as you posted the instant deck tech. From my experience, risk factor like the final nail in the coffin. When you are winning, it puts the game completely out of reach for your opponent. As for the rest of the deck, I was really impressed by arclight phoenix. I found myself actively trying to discard phoenix as it was almost always easier to chain 3 draw spells off of 4 mana than cast a phoenix. In my opinion, one thing it does need is more burn spells, but the hard part is figuring out what to cut for the burn.

Dealing 4 damage isn’t great when you’re about to die next turn, and drawing 3 can lead to huge blowouts if you don’t hit a burn spell.

I'm also not sure about opt in this deck. I think more creatures and burn in that slot would help you speed up a bit. Maybe four shocks could take that spot? Ultimately, I think this deck's competitive advantage compared to mono-red should be it's ability to grind out other aggressive decks out of the sideboard while only losing a little speed against stompy and control.

    Risk Factor is a really good card, especially if youre going aggro with a red blue wizard deck. With guttersnipe in the standard format as well, theres no reason to not put risk factor, along the jump-start cards.
    Have electromancer to make a 2 mana 4 damage to the face
    Have guttersnipe for dealing a total of 6 damage or draw 3 cards and deal 2 damage to the face,
    Bring ionize, counter spells+ 2 damage! 2 mana counter or 4 damage to the face if you have electromancer or guttersnipe respectively on the battlefield.
    since risk factor, and radical idea have the jump start ability, im sure sprinkling the deck with crackling drakes is a nice combo; card draw and power based on your graveyard AND in exile? and toughness of 4? Sounds necssary to me.
    Also, im certain including a Niv-mizzet can make your risk factor be crazy good (ofc when things are going late game)

    One of the issues here is you don't need to hold risk factor until you're guaranteed to get the draw. Play it aggressively and make your opponent to make the choice. If they take the damage and Whittle themselves down they are now put into a position where they are more likely to make tough choices. Like you said always be the aggressor that includes with risk factor

    Just a quick FYI... you missed a few things in Match 4. There was one turn where you cast two Risk Factors on your end step, and had the mana left to also cast Radical Idea to get an Arclight Phoenix back, but didn't. And then 2 turns later, after casting Adeliz and having it targeted with Firemind's Research before combat, your opponent was at 3 life, you could have jump-started Radical Idea from the graveyard to pump Lavarunner into a 3/3 with Adeliz's team-wizard-pump and force them to have exactly Opt or Lightning Strike to survive.
    You still won the game, so nbd, but just pointing out some other higher-upside lines that were in play.

      Good call on Adeliz. As far as Phoenix it only return at the beginning of combat on our turn, so it would have been too late.

  • @ladycthuwu

    I built something similar to this. I would drop the Arclight and the Radical idea (or Chart a course, whichever) in favor of 4 Viashino Pyromancer and Lightning Strike. Then drop 2 risk factors in favor of something else. With Jumpstart, 4 is just too many Risk Factor. I personally went with 2 Guttersnipe, but I'm not convinced that is the right choice either. I also run only 20 lands to make room for 2 Ionize. Nothing in this deck costs more than 3 mana (assuming you ditch Arclight) and you've got Electromancer further reducing these already inexpensive spells. Even at 20 lands, I flood more often than I miss drops that I need. I would personally cut two of the shock lands. You don't have any spells that cost double red or double blue and you have not good blockers, so you rarely want to shock it in.
    For the sideboard, I'd cut a couple Drakes and Frenzy for Cannonade.

    Game 1 of the tokens matchup, around the 27 minute mark, Seth asks, "Can we kill him here?" No but if you threw both bolts at face, you'd have him at 2 and force him to have removal next turn or lose. I think I'd have taken that line.

    I think Seth: 1, Plays them way too passively, in the early game you can let Risk Factor BE a part of your pressure.
    2. is way too hard on the card in general. There are several times when he keeps complaining the card is SO BAAAAAD when not a single card in nearly all of magic would have got him out it (i.e. game 1 match one when he says if we had JUST drawn one of these and points to 2 jump starts a opt and two lands, take those cards, shuffle them up and by the time you had cast them all you still would have been dead. Sometimes you are just unlucky and we've seen Seth get THAT unlucky plenty of times)

    • @docpox3900
      @docpox3900 6 років тому

      I think it’s just frustrating cause it’s basically “oh this instant isn’t good at every point you can play an instant” which is essentially the “dies to removal” for non creatures.
      For someone I’ve seen die to it multiple times it’s weird that you haven’t made the connection. Like how burn is essentially a combo deck Risk Factor is essentially a combo card; you won’t play it everywhere but it will shine for you if you let it.

It seems like the deck couldn’t decide if it were a spells deck or an aggressive wizards deck.

    I feel like this is more of a midrange deck. And what I have noticed with midrange decks risk factor tends to be a dead card. This isn't controlly enough for the reach half nor is it aggro enough for the draw half.
    Doesn't help either that cmc 3 (14 of 38) is the most common cost.

    Decks I like in GRN standard:
    Mono red keld risk factor
    Izzet Wizards burn
    Izzet drakes
    This decklist has some real identity issues.
    12 card draw spells, no shocks+strikes? Goblin Electromancer is just not good either. Drakes in sideboard? Same with Archlight Phoenix, by the time you want that payoff, you should have the game relatively sealed out.
    Go more all in on the wizards plan if you're going to make Adeliz one of the payoffs, some mix of: Aven Wind Mage, Exclusion Mage, Merfolk Trickster, Siren Stormtamer, Vaishino Pyromancer, 4th Dragonauts.
    Also, Chart a Course has the worst synergy with Adeliz. (Opt at instant speed can be nice still).

  • @ronankelley7768

    The magic gods are punishing you for no taking risk factor seriously. The feels like it has much hair, I would consider adding a couple of chemister insights for actual card advantage, lightning strikes would also help, and etiher more creatures or more burn. On the sb, you need like a couple of rals, and sweepers.
    Also stop hating on risk factor, every single time you were putting enough pressure it was super good, the key to the card is gettting the opp low enough first.

    Just my 2 cents but the other card draw just slows ya down. I think they need to be burn or cheap things if the plan is to maximize risk factor. Now you just have a lot of card draw and a little bit of wizard burn, you want it to be a lot of wizard burn with a bit of draw.
