What an amazing performer this man was. I hang on his every word, no matter how many times I've seen it. Ear to ear smile from beginning to end. Thank you sir George.
George was/IS STILL my mentor. In 8th grade I used to get up in front of the class and do the Hippy Dippy Weatherman routine. Thanks George for changing my life. ;-)
Genius. From the beginning to the end of his career, pure brilliance. I would stay up late at night and watch his specials on HBO and in actuality, only understand his routines partially, but as I grew older, I realized that he was right about everything. Where is the George Carlin of today?
Most comedians rely on exaggeration to make a joke work, as did George sometimes, but a lot of his later more political material relied upon no such exaggeration, just the bizarre, cold, hard truth of reality. Legend.
OMG -- I remember seeing this very episode! (My parents caught me watching TV, after I was supposed to go to bed.) The "massage parlor" joke was my favorite!
AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a million to the wonderful nice person who took their time to share with the rest of us..... Thank You ..... Thank You.......
I became a Carlin fan at the age of 12 or 13. I bought his albums or recorded his material on my tape recorder. I love his mannerisms, eye and face gestures. Carlin didn't need to rely on " Dirty " comedy for a laugh, which I have no issues with, thank you Sam Kinison. George Carlin, the Comedic Genius that has influenced my Humor, appreciative of living to see him LIVE.✌
Carlin is the best stand-up of all time! Most people say Richard Pryor, and he was awesome, but Carlin's material was top notch and his longevity is incomparable. So much material. So many years of teaching us young fuckers how to do shit. He's like a second dad.
I always come back to this clip - been a huge fan forever. btw - January 26, 1981 George Carlin (guest host), Debbie Reynolds, Kip Addotta, Dr. Joyce Brothers
That's a nice television-grey version of the classic RCA 77 microphone being used there. David Letterman used an RCA 77dx on the old show, and Larry King still uses one on his show. Even Tom Green has one on his desk for his little internet show he runs from his home.
I don't think that's a fair assessment of his 90s work. He was always funny. But his work from the 90s til his death became even more observational, analytical, strident, confrontational -- and it was brilliant in cutting thru the B.S. He had always had that knack, but it got sharper in his old age. Like a fine wine, that guy.
Think if you go to UA-cam's archive interviews of George Carlin, he does talk about his professional credits including the number of times he's done stand-up on the The Tonight Show as well as hosting it.
I think George Carlin was. at once, the last of the classic stand-up comedians, and the first of a new generation of same. Yes, he had many obvious inspirational comedians behind him, including Jack Benny, Johnny Carson and more. But he was also so much his own character. A wholly original comedian he was, and I can only say that I loved him from the distance that there was between us. Yeah, I really wish I could've met with and talked to the man.
POV: It's 2047. You just managed to link to the last remaining UA-cam server in the world. It took twelve hours to patch the generator and find enough fuel to boot up the datacenter for 10 minutes. Three people died fighting the zombie hordes outside, and you're losing a lot of blood. As you download the last video mankind will ever watch, you lay back and whisper: "Worth it."
George is the greatest of all time comics. I saw him in Atlantic City two months before he died, but he only did an hour and he wasn't very good. He looked very wrinkled and sickly, But he was my favourite comic, along with perhaps Rodney Dangerfield, and Steven wright is pretty funny and creative like George. As for Richard Pryor, I wouldn't really consider him one of the greats.
I thought he said “Kip Madonna” which threw me off, so I looked her up and found it was Kip Addotta who was a he (a comedian who frequently appeared on the Tonight Show). Maybe I’m not as old as I think since I didn’t know that and had to Google it....lol!
This seems like the most edgy material that would have been allowed on mainstream tv, they probably wouldn't have asked him back after this. great stuff.
@trakomako I'm elated for you that you want others to perceive you as the wonderfully mature, enlightened, intelligent person that you truly are. Carlin is a lot more than a drug addict, he has left a legacy that few other comedians will ever hold a candle to. His social commentary was always current and sharp. Many, like you, will judge his personal life rather than his vast skill and wit, and will therefore miss out on one of the most genius artists of all time.
I just watched the Carlins Inside the Actors Studio and George said he was VERY high on Cocaine during these tonight show fill ins. Makes me wanna go buy some Blow ! LOL
He was nothing short of brilliant. So special and so honest.
Probably the greatest standup comedian of all time. So unafraid, so brutally honest, and so mean that he's almost too funny.
Not "probably"......he was *definitely* the greatest stand-up comedian of all time.
+Xeokym Idonthinkso Ehem.... Ever heard of JOHNNY CARSON?
+guy2008rules If you think Johnny Carson was the greatest stand-up comedian of all time, you're a funny guy yourself.
+Gregory Alan Bailey '' remove the word probably and you'll be 100% right''.
+guy2008rules i have heard of johnny carson indeed and remember him saying that carlin was the greatest of all time..
What an amazing performer this man was. I hang on his every word, no matter how many times I've seen it. Ear to ear smile from beginning to end. Thank you sir George.
"A man who was shot in the chest nine times yesterday and refused treatment... Died today!"
George was/IS STILL my mentor. In 8th grade I used to get up in front of the class and do the Hippy Dippy Weatherman routine.
Thanks George for changing my life. ;-)
You learned from the best
"Rubbed me the wrong way?" Great stuff from the all time Master of original comedy.
I liked that, and "A man who says that for 23 years he has been bending over to help people has been taken to an orthopedic hospital." heheh...
The man worked on ALL levels and continues to work. Thanks for the laughs George.
Genius. From the beginning to the end of his career, pure brilliance. I would stay up late at night and watch his specials on HBO and in actuality, only understand his routines partially, but as I grew older, I realized that he was right about everything. Where is the George Carlin of today?
Bill Maher, maybe… a little bit
Well said 👍
In jail
You can almost see the leash he's straining against.
I know! It’s around his neck and his balls too. Tightening ceaselessly for network television...
Lol

Spoofing the media was my favorite Carlin.
RIP George carlin and Johnny Carson
I recommend George's book "Brain Droppings" Hilarious and he has something to say !!!!
Yes. A good book.
Huh, wasn’t aware of that title.
Thanks. I’ll check it out!
Yes Thank You 😊✌️
"Guest host" was, of course, one of George's favorite oxymorons.

his news clips are always very off the cuff&very funny. Miss u George Carlin.RIP.
the greatest of all time, you will be missed by many
Joke about grapefruit juice was just a work of art!
We all love George Carlin!!!
Funny that he was completely loaded on cocaine on this show as he stated in an interview (unmasked with George Carlin) Great comedian!
NociNL I think it was an earlier guest hosting appearance in the 70's in which he was on coke. By this point in the 80's he had kicked coke.
it was when he hosted the first SNL
So awesome, thanks for sharing this one!
Love Carliin I am really enjoying them, thanks!

5:23 ...."when she was struck head on from the rear." haha
I always come back to this clip - been a huge fan forever. btw - January 26, 1981 George Carlin (guest host), Debbie Reynolds, Kip Addotta, Dr. Joyce Brothers
Need the whole show!!!!
George Carlin before he was good was still really great.
Greatest philosopher of the 20th century.
LEGENDARY
Missing you George! R.I.P.
omg wow! Had no idea. Tk youuuu :D
I loved it! Each to his own. :)

GEORGE CARLIN IS THEEEEEE LEGEND!

Seeing how he brilliantly performed a news segment, he could have done the Weekend Update segment on SNL.
Golbez1991 he hosted the first snl ever
George was always funny, SNL no longer is.
R.I.P Mr. Carlin ur comedy will live on forever, unlike comedy of today
Yup, and I saw an interview (right here on UA-cam I think, TVLegends or some such thing) where he said that SNL has ignored him since then.
Which I'll never understand since SNL rips politicians on a regular basis, which Carlin was a master at.
Great outfit choice from the GOAT.
Definitely.....epic era of television and movies without a doubt.
I love george carlin. What a mind.
He makes Johnny Carson and his writers look like AMATEURS!
Wow that was better then many of Johnny's openings.
'Being alive is actually a form of disease' Makes so much sense!
if you had to pick only one comedian as the best in the world, he'd be on the list of like 4 names
KEVIN PIASTRA: COMEDIAN Only one or like 4?
And national treasure. He killed me.😂😂😂
nice to see another Dio Era Sabbath Fan and Carlin Fan
Anyone else watching this in 2017?
No - 2018. Sorry, missed the right time for this...
aakash neve 2018!
2018.
There are no dirty words. It's how you use them, and Carlin uses them just right.
Think if you go to UA-cam's archive interviews of George Carlin, he does talk about his professional credits including the number of times he's done stand-up on the The Tonight Show as well as hosting it.
I'd love to see the rest of this episode. Kip and George trading puns?!?! Yes, now, all of it, now, please?!?
George is the best, the world has never known a better comedian, a better PROFESSIONAL COMEDIAN!
Ahh man the country in going down the tubes....
What tubes? I don't see any tuebs.
Carson and carlin in the same role of film am I dead or in the twilight zone? eather way this is awesome:D
Love this piece. Imagine if GC did "Weekend update" on SNL? Chevy, who?
When it comes to comedy there’s only two words Carlin & Pryor!
I think George Carlin was. at once, the last of the classic stand-up comedians, and the first of a new generation of same. The idea of FDR crank calling Hitler is hilarious. George was such a genius I. The way he would phrase things like that.
A BIG THUMBS UP 👍 to George Carlin , " CLASSIC "
cool name for a city, always liked it. What state is that in? (I'm an Aussie).
3:38 "A vice squad policeman has arrested the owner of a massage parlor because he said he rubbed him the wrong way."
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I just posted the Scotland joke to my Facebook status.
Guess I wasn't the first one to feel that way.
Thats crazy!! Even his HBO specials?? Specifically his last one that he did around 5 months or so before he died???

Why isn't he in the history book?
Milos R. He told the truth, so as far as the world is concerned, he never existed
He is
He exposed the people who run this world.

David Carson you forgot the greatest comic of all time...BILL HICKS...
This aired on Jan. 26, 1981 - to be exact.
Joe Mama really really?
Actually it aird in Jan 26 1977
Wow 1977? He was ahead of his time
I like the capitol of Scotland joke. LOL
I thought he said “Kip Madonna” which threw me off, so I looked her up and found it was Kip Addotta who was a he (a comedian who frequently appeared on the Tonight Show). Maybe I’m not as old as I think since I didn’t know that and had to Google it....lol!
Well Murray got his start in troupe comedy with Second City, but all the others he mentioned all got their start in stand up.
could someone post the full episode
he's voice changed prettty considerabley
MOSTLY? SOOO "F"in BRIGHT & INSIGHTFUL!!!
This seems like the most edgy material that would have been allowed on mainstream tv, they probably wouldn't have asked him back after this. great stuff.
A fing genius🥰🥰
Vaduh, what tubes? I don't see any tubes. (If you're a Carlin fan, you'll get it.)
sounds like he is reading from the onion..
Master of comedy!
Is this on DVD by chance?
Looked like videotape to me. Probably recorded off the air. I don't know if it is also on DVD.

lol so true, grape fruit oil car, they have a vegetable oil car
Date is February 28, 1977
@Aleksandr Scheffler: Me three! I own every album from both of them. :)
Lmao hes so god damn funny.
Wow, in 4 years from the USC show in 1977 he sure showed his aging. [If the dating on this is correct, he is only about 44 at this point in time]
*flails arms wildly*
Doc Severinsen is 96 years old now.
01-26-1981
those first 3 "headlines" i've never heard from him before.
I think he made exclusive stuff up when he hosted the Tonight Show
you know he has never been on a tv and not be high. i admire that.
A little hats off to "Charlie Farquarson". Lol , Hee Haw . Look it up.~
👍🥰
@FungusMossGnosis very early 1980s man. he actually looks decent considering what was fashionable at the time.
Those president jokes were used in the very video I saw of Carlin before this....
I wonder if he's coked out of his mind on this one
Yes. Yes he is.
You'd have to be coked up to host The Tonight Show.
Lol probably all of them
Nah he stopped doing coke in the 80s
I just watched the Carlins Inside the Actors Studio and George said he was VERY high on Cocaine during these tonight show fill ins. Makes me wanna go buy some Blow ! LOL
NO SOUND! 🤨 🧐 🤔
