i like to alternate a white and then a norway...i get the fast growth of the white for a quicker screen and the longevety of the norway...if i loose the white or have to remove it when it begins to loose lower limbs it has served its purpose...and can also then provide side cover or the limbs can be used to screen blinds as jake did.
Hey Jake. Another great video. I ended up planning about 70 Norway spruce trees on my western side of my property this spring. It’s at the edge of a hey field that a local farmer takes the hay off. There is no exchange of money for the hay but he pays me in half a pig and half a cow. Part of the deal is he puts 6-7 cows on out 13 acre pasture. Question I have is Should I turn the hay fields into wildlife habitat Just let it grow into early successional growth Thank you
White pine is ok when further apart. Norway spruce sucks. Too much winter burn after the first winter or 2, kills a good amount of them. Black hills spruce grows just as fast and has the same dropping branches as the Norway and doesn’t have any winter burn on the young seedlings. Also red Cedar is a very underused tree for screening. I’d go with 1 row of red cedar and 1 row of black hills spruce.
They will provide great bedding when planted in a random pattern with ample space between, its ok to plant them in lines along edges but the interior should have multiple openings of varying sizes.
If you’re going to plant a spruce plant a White rather than Norway. Native north American trees will always fit better in the habitat and be favored by all critters
fully agree...All I've ever planted for screening...great information

Great video. Thank you!
Nothing can compete with a mature White Pine forest. They are majestic and just have a presence that spruce does not.
Planning to plant 10 to 14 Noraway Spruce this fall. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this info. Very helpful !

Norway is the way to go
Great video Jake ! Definitely going to switch my plantings to the Norway spruce after watching this video.
Can you top a white pine so as to keep it low and green all the way to the ground?
Ive seen it done to keep the height low, may help self-pruning from taking place.

What do you think about Austrian pine?
They dont self prune as much as white pine, I have a few growing here on the property, IMO not nearly as good a habitat conifer as norway spruce.
How do you like Norway spruce for bedding areas?
They will provide great bedding when planted in a random pattern with ample space between, its ok to plant them in lines along edges but the interior should have multiple openings of varying sizes.
@@habitatsolutions360llc3 Thanks for all the great info 👍. I just planted 4000 trees just wanted to make sure I did waste my time LOL.

Why 'or'. Plant both.
I originally planted both varieties, this video demonstrates what I experienced when creating habitat & visual screening using both.
during ice storms white pine have horrible branches break off giant branches
Top them at 10 to 12ft .

Are you asking or telling?
