    I may be an American enthusiast who prefers GWR locomotives, but I gotta hand it to William Stanier. He knew what he was doing when he designed the LMS 8F. Sure, they were mostly goods engines, but, as I understand it, they weren't slowpokes either. With that logic, it's understandable that a few 8Fs also saw occasional use in passenger service. Therefore, it's only fitting that the ones that are currently operational pull passenger trains. Whether it's on a heritage railway like the famed North Yorkshire Moors Railway or on the former LMS West Coast Main Line where many of them bustled back and forth with heavy goods trains tied to their tenders in the days of steam, they can handle virtually ANY job thrown at them.

      The 8F was essentially derived from the 28xx design, so you’re still not far off from preferring GWR locomotives.

      There is also the famous black 5 too. Absolute icon of a workhorse.

    Hi, I always had a soft spot for the LMS Crimson red loco's. Very distinctive. This 8F is a real beauty ! Thanks for sharing. Cheers,

    Like the BR Standard Class 9Fs, the LMS Stanier 8Fs are banned from working on the mainline rail network in preservation. This is probably due to the length of their wheelbase.

    There don't seem to be any videos about the restoration of the 8Fs. The Monster Moves documentary about the repatriation of two of them was so great to watch. What happened after that?

    I don't get it. Why would you need two break vans at each end?

    • @preservedrailway
      @preservedrailway  Рік тому

      Train runs round, you need a brake van on the rear for the return journey. Saves on remarshalling the train at either end of the line.

      @@preservedrailway Oh. Also, do heritage railways ever carry actual goods, like repair supplies, coal, and all that?

    If I had to choose between a black 5 or an 8f I'd say I like the 8f's better cause I think they have nice design

      They actually look very similar if you don't look at the wheels, I think 8fs are bigger but I haven't seem them side to side, but when it's being told to you you can't mix them up. (By the way Henry is a combination of a GNR C1 Atlantic and an LNER A1 Pacific that has been modified to have a boiler and firebox similar to a Black 5 with a Caprotti valve gear except the firebox is taller and is shaped a little differently, he also has wheel arches and most of his workings are inside him like his lubrication system).
