Slow or not, we are fortunate to see these machines at work. Not sure that the expertise, effort and expense that goes into providing these events is thoroughly appreciated.
GWR locomotives got much of their superiority (as in power to size ratio, and fuel economy) from Welsh coal, which was much closer to anthracite than the coal used by other railways. There is no Welsh coal being mined now.
Yes, I too noticed that they were very slow even at the botttom, and after that it was always going to be a slog, but the thing about Castles is that you know they will keep sloggging and will get there
It was known in the weeks leading up to the railtour running that the TSR would be in place which just added to the anticipation of what would happen on the day. Thanks for watching
There was no diesel locomotive on the rear of this charter which was from August 2004. Also the run with 5043 & 7029 in September 2024 was not hampered by the TSR in force of 20mph near to the foot of the bank for 5029 & 5051. 5043 & 7029 were up to a speed of 64mph at the bottom of the bank. 5029 & 5051 were restricted to no more than 20mph max because of the TSR.

And seemingly the minefield of running steam on the mainline gets ever more stringent year on year. Thanks for watching
SHEER JOY. I could watch/listen to that all day long. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the emojis & thanks for watching
Lovely. Look at all those people just enjoying it. I'm sure some responsible person will be able to think up a reason to ban it.

Slow climb of Hemerdon, would expect 2 Castles to do better.
The 2 locos were unable to take a run at the bank due to a 20mph speed restriction in place near the foot of the bank following engineering work

5043 and 7029 have done it much faster and without diesel on the back
