Or janitors if they are on duty and doing their routine sweep. And you do not have to catch every violators just enough to intimidate other violators.
I don't know about Singapore, but in the USA, homeless people sometimes pee in elevators. If nobody will let you into their store and public restrooms cost money (if they even exist), then an elevator in a parking garage may be the most private place that you can find.

It wasn’t bc of pets, I live in Singapore and it’s Cus last time there used to be people peeing in the corners of elevators very often, so the rule was implemented and cctv cameras as well as other measures were added to lifts to prevent this

This is why I'm in favor of percentage fines since if they charge you 1% of your income then it'll affect everyone equally. For a poor person it might be like $200, which is a lot of money for them, but for a millionaire it'll be at least $10,000, which is a noticeable amount for them.

Also a very common misconception: chewing gum is not illegal, the sale of it is. So you can bring in gum for personal consumption, but you won't be able to buy it here (except nicotine/dental gum).
also, please wrap your chewed gum in a piece of paper/tissue before throwing it IN A TRASH CAN. why? its because singapore is very hot so if you throw the chewed gum on the floor the sun will dry it up and it will become very hard to clean. singapore is called 'garden city' because most people dont litter (but cleaners are still needed for people who do litter) so if you do come to singapore, please follow the laws and keep singapore a garden city. it may not seem like much help if you dont litter but trust me, us singaporeans appreciate it a lot. thank you for your time ☺️

Apparently, they exist. Now they just take to the stairs as the elevators have CCTVs installed. A sicko (or maybe sickos) has been peeing on the stairs of Block 1 Pinnacle@Duxton between the basement and the ~15th floor. They seem to wash the stairs on Wednesdays but within the day, there's pee again.

I saw something in the elevator once it did look like pee. Also, once my class TA (let's call her T) told me about something. So basically, there is always this sketchy man staring at kids after school when they walk home, and once T was walking home and she bumped into him taking a piss on the side of the street , she was probably traumatised
There are lots of such cases, thus the law was passed down. I remembered in the 1980s when i was still a kid, the escalators would from time to time covered with urine. Cctv was a rarity in those days.

It is, from what I understand, a lot of that has to do with just how small the city is compared with the population. Even a little bit of filth can lead to a lot of issues. That being said, I do think they've gone overboard and the fines imply that it's not working.

it’s actually pigeons. you feed the pigeons, they eat, then they shit on cars that parks in the open car parks or our clothes, which we hang outside to dry (most of us lives in apartments). if you’re unlucky, they shit on you too, so that’s why they don’t let us feed the pigeons (but there’s always some elderly that secretly throw bread to feed them)

As a Freedom loving American, I want to vehemently argue, but, I've been to the city and still don't know how so many people live, in such a small area, and yet everything remains idyllic. You do you because it apparently works. I'm going back to the ranch and pickup truck.
I have lived there for a semester while studying and it was amazing. Take the smoking rule, for example: there are plenty of designated areas so that whoever wants to do it can without bothering others. People are respectful and kind, the city is clean and you always feel safe. It's a huge city, but public transport is efficient and you can also move by bike if you want (depending on the distance you need to cover). I feel like they have a high standard of living and while some laws may be excessive, they prevent some socially unacceptable behaviour. Some other, older laws are not really enforced anyways. Me and all my friends that went there absolutely loved the city and would love to come there asap!
I'm a Singaporean, although all these rules may make Singapore look strict, it's actually really good to have all these rules so that it's much safer and less messy in the country. 😊
Peeing in elevators used to be a HUGE problem in S'pore in the 80's. If you walk into any HDB flat's or most buildings' elevators, 10 out of 10 times your nostrils would be hit by a pee stench as soon as the doors opened. This was before the CCTVs became common and S'porians' stress level was so high the male population unanimously decided to vent their angst this way.
I mean, I literally support all of these laws except for the $150 fine for not flushing since I think it discourages water-saving measures of “if it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down”
@@mechadoggysingapore has a very clean sewage system where the water from bathrooms are filtered out very throughly and reused. the water is so clean till the point of being able to drink tap water without any problems. :) toilets also include "half" flushes for the different level of business, using less water for pee.

Jaywalking is illegal but there are some caveats to it, but all you need to know is that the law is in place because of how densely populated the country is, so the law is there to deter people from putting their lives in unnecessary risk. It is a wonderful place to live it, albeit abit boring cause of the small land space there, limiting the variety of things that we can do. Honestly i’d rather have the safety and security of Singapore over corrupt, dangerous and politically unstable countries of that means it’s alittle boring from time to time.

It is, from what I understand, a lot of that has to do with just how small the city is compared with the population. Even a little bit of filth can lead to a lot of issues. That being said, I do think they've gone overboard and the fines imply that it's not working.

it’s actually pigeons. you feed the pigeons, they eat, then they shit on cars that parks in the open car parks or our clothes, which we hang outside to dry (most of us lives in apartments). if you’re unlucky, they shit on you too, so that’s why they don’t let us feed the pigeons (but there’s always some elderly that secretly throw bread to feed them)

I have lived there for a semester while studying and it was amazing. Take the smoking rule, for example: there are plenty of designated areas so that whoever wants to do it can without bothering others. People are respectful and kind, the city is clean and you always feel safe.
It's a huge city, but public transport is efficient and you can also move by bike if you want (depending on the distance you need to cover). I feel like they have a high standard of living and while some laws may be excessive, they prevent some socially unacceptable behaviour. Some other, older laws are not really enforced anyways.
Me and all my friends that went there absolutely loved the city and would love to come there asap!

Peeing in elevators used to be a HUGE problem in S'pore in the 80's. If you walk into any HDB flat's or most buildings' elevators, 10 out of 10 times your nostrils would be hit by a pee stench as soon as the doors opened. This was before the CCTVs became common and S'porians' stress level was so high the male population unanimously decided to vent their angst this way.

When I was in Singapore I had no idea I wasn't supposed to feed the birds! I did it at breakfast at an outdoor restaurant. No one got upset. Was told they give tourists a break. Did not do that again. You have to respect the rules of other countries. Beautiful place to visit. Would love to go again.

I understand drinking/eating ban at the trains in general. BUT I feel like water specifically should be allowed. It won't cause any harm, and sometimes it's necessary to hydrate yourself on the ride, especially when it's hot.
And how about dining cars or bar in mainline trains ? They exist pretty much everywhere.
I do believe drinking water is allowed on trains and buses here in Singapore.

Hey buddy, $500 for a pee, it's largely the early kids living in a city with the village mentality that's doing it. It's their parents that's paying the fines. The government is exercising understanding for the parents whilst at the same time educating the kids on behalf of the parents. Both parties learn the expensive way. As for the adults, it's the disgusting drunkards that are doing it. Not anymore, though.

I actually used to work next to the “drug rehab” centre/prison in Singapore… and boy, did you hear those screams of pain all day everyday. No idea what went on behind those prison walls, but I sure as heck knew I was never going to touch drugs whilst living there!

Yep, great city, clean, safe, no graffiti, great food, lots to see and do. Don’t chew gum or jaywalk, chewing gum is illegal. I have friends there, visited last April.

@@Guille2033 you can chew gum in singapore, you just can’t buy/sell in Singapore. Jaywalking is illegal but there are some caveats to it, but all you need to know is that the law is in place because of how densely populated the country is, so the law is there to deter people from putting their lives in unnecessary risk.
It is a wonderful place to live it, albeit abit boring cause of the small land space there, limiting the variety of things that we can do. Honestly i’d rather have the safety and security of Singapore over corrupt, dangerous and politically unstable countries of that means it’s alittle boring from time to time.
