I think the main answer is that Newport was a brand that made a conscious decision to target blacks through direct advertising in the 70s, which a lot of other brands didn’t do.
Everyone was smoking back then. I've never smoked a cigarette personally and never will. Haven't smoked marijuana either but I definitely will eventually.
This is exactly what I was going to say. It was intentionally marketed to black folks just like certain fast food chains. And the campaign was successful - simple as that.
I believe it was ads in Ebony magazine that started the trend, can’t remember where I read about it but obviously back then it was a lot harder to get a minority focussed piece of media published so it had a pretty big slice of its targeted viewership.

joe asked, katt answered. no one had any reason to yell or shout or lie or anything. it was nice lol. the answer made sense too, i mean i always did wonder why they seem to prefer menthol and malt liquor to everything else. i mean the reason they love watermelon and chicken is because its ingrained in them from when they came over and were living in the south. chicken is cheap, so is watermelon and in the south ESPECIALLY since you can easily grow melons or raise chickens so it makes sense that those foods were staples in black homes. plus in the heat watermelon is amazing and again its the south so it was always hot. things make sense, its just that people need to explain it rather than get mad about it. people are curious beings. we like discovering things and talking.
Honest from only his perspective. But the truth lies elsewhere. Black people are very trend conscious also. There's no young black kids sitting there today contemplating what pack of cigarettes to buy and researching which brand delivers the most product per $. They're simply doing it because "that's what we smoke". It's literally as simple as that. You think Hennessy or Courvoisier offer the best "value" or "strength of product" other than in name only? Come on, man. Another cultural difference is that if you are black and you're not doing what other blacks are doing, you run the risk of being called an Uncle Tom, a sellout or even "White". They are a culture consumed with peer pressure and Katt is being disingenuous.
Allegedly, back in the day, newport gave cigarettes to African American kids. There was a lawsuit. That was a terrible answer. He could have said "Cuz it taste guuuud..." and it would have been fine. Except he had to come up with some bs that sounded relevant when it wasn't. I enjoy menthols. It's 5:18 AM and I'm about to have a Kool. Has nothing to do with ethnicity, culture, or perception. It's addictive and I like the taste.
From my experience black people usually don’t prefer the strength of their products but like to sweeten them, hence they mix gin with juice and not tonic, hennessy with something else, cigarettes with menthol, they don’t like beer that much, especially not bitter beer, but often drink supermalt and other sickly sweet stuff, they often don’t like smoky whisky’s etc
The addiction to Menthol was a huge hidden agenda from big tobacco. The sensation from methanol made the experience more pleasant which in turn makes you want more.
The real answer is they kill you faster that's why they're marketed toward black people. Katt knows the racist truth behind this that's why he doesn't want to say it.
i’m mixed and i like it too ,i think it has to do with the cooling sensation it gives you instead of the straight tobacco flavor lot of people won’t even touch regular cigarettes anymore

@Mistabushi anyone can cook a chicken, but it takes a certain amount of wealth and technique to cook fried chicken. It's not just throwing the chicken on heat, it's the added social acceptance that you are more wealthy if you can afford the extra ingredients. The flour, eggs, cream, seasonings and a lot of oil are all staple ingredients for many different meals and each cost extra. It's the added value to the food and perception of wealth that you can dredge chicken in the same amount of flour, eggs or corn meal that it would normally take to make a loaf of bread or cornbread, and put in on the chicken instead to make a crust. Not only is it delicious, but it shows that you have class and before black neighborhoods were overrun by greedy politicians who promised welfare for votes, they were very wealthy Middle class black neighborhoods. This is why certain foods that were created, adopted and became the norm during the good times have stuck to become cultural norms. Even the foods that became popular and favorited during the hard times, ie watermelon, hold their value culturally to this day as well. Every cultural and race has connected class to food items and have adopted certain foods to their culture during hard times and good times to become cultural norms aka stereotypical foods. I very much dislike when people relate these cultural norms to "racism" because we should all embrace our food history and accept that it shows where we have all come from and because food is delicious. I also hate the fact that you can't use say "fried chicken and watermelon" without getting canceled.

That’s an interesting way to put it, and why it was hard for him to put it to words, but black ppl like the highest perceived value of things, so Newports, Hennessy, Bentley etc, the highest forms of commercialism
It's the kid version of the real thing. You get addicted nice and early because it's minty rather than bitter. "Potency" is a highly suspect hypothesis in Menthols' case; Reds are much more intense and more common but could possibly be pricier (guessing, haven't smoked neither in decades)
For the people that want the real truth to this question, here it is. Certain products are marketed towards certain demographics and it's no coincidence that those products are often much more unhealthy than similar versions of the same product. It's strange how menthol cigarettes kill you faster, Kool-Aid has toxic ingredients, and other very particular products are aimed at certain people to keep them unhealthy and/or poor. The truth really is racist but Katt doesn't want to say it.
I smoke weed, BUT when i was smoking cigarettes. I tried Marlboro, Kool, & Newport. To ME, out of all 3, the Newport cigarette after inhaling it. . . Got me light headed & it lasted for awhile. . .but thats just me cuz now i just smoke weed.
Menthol is way better than non-menthol. I smoked cigarettes for 10 years and my favorite was Newport short menthols... I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, I'm very grateful for that.
Actually it’s simply because of advertising. Newports and Kools were heavily advertised to black consumers in the 1970’s and 1980’s. They became a staple in the black community 👍
As someone who prefers darker beers and ale instead of a lager or pilsner i can fully get behind this reasoning. Have a cream soda is you want a mild drink. I think i just dislike peppermint but the feeling of methols is better. Like a texan plain but you can still breath for the rest of the day.
bro i wanna sit down with Katt like this and just figure out the fkin world . my dude is patient , observant , and concise asf.... let's smoke down brother
With Newports Menthol being more expensive than they were just 4-5 years ago in the west coast, I can see them going out of their capitalized market. The market being people who just wanted a smoke in between work and at home. Now the average West coast lower "bang for your buck" cigs are L&Ms, Traffic, Seneca or Marlboro Midnight. Which are all pretty decent. Currently on the Senecas and they're cheap and work.
The question of why menthol cigarettes are more popular among Black Americans is complex and rooted in historical, social, and economic factors. It's important to approach this topic with sensitivity and an understanding of the broader context of tobacco marketing and its impacts on different communities. Here are some key points to consider: Targeted Advertising: For decades, tobacco companies have specifically targeted Black communities with marketing for menthol cigarettes. This includes advertisements in magazines that cater to a Black readership, billboards in predominantly Black neighborhoods, and sponsorship of events like music festivals. Such targeted marketing efforts have significantly influenced smoking preferences within these communities. Menthol as a Flavor Additive: Menthol is a compound that provides a cooling sensation, which can make smoke feel less harsh. This characteristic might make starting smoking more palatable for some people. For individuals who are new to smoking, menthol cigarettes might seem like a more accessible option due to this perceived smoothness and the flavoring that masks the tobacco's natural bitterness. Historical Context: The preference for menthol cigarettes in Black communities didn't occur in a vacuum. It was shaped over years by the aggressive marketing strategies of tobacco companies. Research and investigations have revealed that these companies deliberately increased menthol cigarette advertisements and product availability in Black neighborhoods, exploiting social and economic vulnerabilities. Cultural Factors: Over time, the prevalence of menthol cigarette smoking in Black communities has also been reinforced by cultural factors. As menthol smoking became more common within these communities, partly due to targeted marketing, it also became more visible and, to some extent, a part of social norms within certain groups. Health Impact Awareness and Regulation: It's important to note the increased awareness of the health impacts of smoking, including menthol cigarettes, which has led to calls for regulation. Some studies suggest that menthol cigarettes may be more addictive and harder to quit than non-menthol cigarettes, contributing to health disparities in communities disproportionately affected by menthol cigarette marketing. Recognizing these impacts, some places have taken steps to ban or restrict the sale of menthol cigarettes to reduce smoking rates and improve public health outcomes.
The brand ‘cool lights’ were marketed exclusively toward black people in the 40s. Cigarettes weren’t normally advertised toward black people featuring black people. To be ‘cool’ you smoke ‘cool lights’. That Was the message. It was a huge hit with the blacks and has remained so. Sad they canceled menthol in California.
The reason, in my opinion, is they target a black audience. The evidence for this is overwhelming. Like Kat Williams said, Black People prefer the stronger image. Proud and strong people. The tobacco industry have preyed on them for this in my opinion. And target them.
Back in the early 90s in st louis you would smoke a big Philly blunt with dirt weed and then smoke a Newport Square. The Newport was like a extra high. For many years I smoked Newport menthol or kools only because that's what you smoked after a fat blunt
Innocently asking for real…do menthols go good with something? I personally like menthols and I’m white lady? For me it can keep the want to throw up when I’m drinking to a minimum…menthols go better with alcohol…and wings. Couple beers…some wings and a menthol after…can’t really beat it honestly.
Menthols, especially Newports and Cools, open up the lungs more when inhaling so that the nicotine hits faster. Most blacks smoke it after smoking weed as that nicotine rush will combine with the weed high and intensify it. I also know this from personal experience from when I used to smoke. If I ran outta weed but had a roach and a menthol newport, I could get high like I had a blunt lol
They also go good with coke as of course menthol will open your lungs up, making you able to snort more. Now that's info that I haven't experienced personally. But it's a thing
Newport Reds were the best cigarettes I ever smoked. I started out smoking Newports, the regular menthols, when I stopped smoking menthols I loved Newport Reds.
Here's the answer. Non menthol cigarettes typically have no taste or very little, you don't really feel the smoke hit your throat and lungs and it feels like you are blowing air in and out. After smoking a full non menthol cigarette I would still need a cigarette it felt lacking. Menthol cigarettes are the opposite, bold flavor you feel the smoke in your throat, one puff after not smoking a cigarette for a while is soothing. When I'm done with one I could smoke another right away but dont need to.
When i smoked sometimes id get menthols and often times camel crush because they had a nice smooth kick to them and good flavor. For a cigarette, anyway.
I think and I’m 60 yrs old Newports been out for a long time just like malt liquor beer… it’s a generation thing people copy one another over the years being friends, relatives plus it’s your upbringing and where you were brought up at, especially in the urban areas
I think the main answer is that Newport was a brand that made a conscious decision to target blacks through direct advertising in the 70s, which a lot of other brands didn’t do.
Definitely marketing.. a lot of mindsets or habits are pass down.. this goes for everything.

I like how kat pronounces the words he is saying. It has something satisfying to it.
i always wanted to axe this question...
I see what you did there
😂
People need to realize how much respect it takes to actually recall back to the question after it veers off for a sec.
Probably justa grade 8 public school and methols
Oh God calm down it's not a big deal to circle back to a question if you get off topic and what tf does respect have anything to do with it??
I've had literally one menthol. Like inhaling toothpaste!
ikr terrible compared to traditional tobacco
Man I used to not care for Kat but I really like this dude.
It's cool that you're open to change. Why did you used to feel like that?
That’s an interesting way to put it, and why it was hard for him to put it to words, but black ppl like the highest perceived value of things, so Newports, Hennessy, Bentley etc, the highest forms of commercialism
The REAL question is how ANYBODY could like a menthol cigarette ?!? 😅😅😂
yea blacks just lack taste and like smoking medicinal toothpaste flavored chemicals i guess
Because it has an Upsidedown Nike Check on it.
The most legit answer I ever heard. Similar to liking seasoned food.
Explains why they loved crack
😂😂😂
The answer was horribly incorrect tho
It's the kid version of the real thing. You get addicted nice and early because it's minty rather than bitter. "Potency" is a highly suspect hypothesis in Menthols' case; Reds are much more intense and more common but could possibly be pricier (guessing, haven't smoked neither in decades)
Katt answered that dumb questions elegantly😂 People go for that stronger stuff because they have seen and been through more shyt!
Here in Scotland only women smoke menthols, they aren’t seen as strong, they are seen as weak……no kick, like smoking chewing gum.
Wut?
@@bygoneera9521Same here in Ireland. No men smoke menthol cigarettes. I prefer a cigar or a rolled tobacco cigarette.
Laughing.....No they havent.
European menthol cigarettes are different as European tobacco is cleaner
"I don't know"
"That is correct!"
This man said urzikstan
Isn't that a COD Warzone map lol
@@toxicgracie3772 exactly
Massachusetts did the same thing. I feel so free
The truth really is racist but Katt doesn't want to say it.
thats why i smoke marlboros, eat McDonald's and drink Coca Cola. Im out here playing chess not checkers with my health.
I’ve noticed a huge uptick in black actors in McDonald’s TV and radio ads. You are on to something
I wish he woulda asked this question to Neil degrasse tyson
Kat handle this soooo greatly
When you cant afford a lot get the strongest thing you can .😮its very logical if you think about it
Honestly that was a good answer, I half expected this to go off the rails
You can easily tell Katt takes the time to think before he speaks. Such an intellectual human being.
Lmao, he talks himself in a circle lol.
Dudes just stoned
And he fights kids
Lmaoooooo bar is so low for bp
This message was brought to you by Alpha Brain. And we now return to your regularly scheduled programming
Thank you Mr.Williams, thank you Sir
Love Katt!!! Dude is upfront and wise.
California sounds like the Netherlands.
The mere fact that they are here speaking is just everything these guys are different and love them both
honestly thats a good answer and is not at all racist Having more knowledge about our fellow humans can never be racism
This interview with joe shows that there is indeed a difference between weed and alcohol
Every Smoke shop in California sells menthol and favored vapee. They all drive to Vegas and buy them.
Just ask.
California law makers like to make laws, they just don’t enforce them at all. A California law is kinda hilarious at this point
Same as the guns
Yup😂😂
Newports are honestly just really smooth, even the newports without the menthols are smooth as hell.
Menthol is way better than non-menthol.
I smoked cigarettes for 10 years and my favorite was Newport short menthols... I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, I'm very grateful for that.
Got damn. He pulled out the only possible amazing indisputable and uncontroversial answer there could ever be. That was not a wasted 2:47 minutes.
😂.... I'm black and I hate menthol cigarettes. I smoke white girl cigarettes.. Haha
Marlboro lights non menthol.
Actually it’s simply because of advertising. Newports and Kools were heavily advertised to black consumers in the 1970’s and 1980’s. They became a staple in the black community 👍
Im white, i drink steel reserve because its cheap and gets the job done but newports are nasty
Newport Menthols are less nasty than any non-menthol cig. The menthol is way less smelly and doesn't linger as long as reds do.
@@toxicgracie3772 to each their own i guess. If i dont want things to smell like cigarettes, i jist don't smoke near them
Steel Reserve is also nasty 😂
@@michaelj6392 Exactly lmao 🤣
What a great fucking answer. Love Katt man. Always have always will.
As a Puerto rican i love me some newports and malboro NXTs 😂
I remember i used to ask black people why they like New Port but wouldn't smoke Marbolo? They told me that Marbolo was Racist. It made sense...
why not camels or ya know just any cigarette that doesnt taste like toothpaste
As someone who prefers darker beers and ale instead of a lager or pilsner i can fully get behind this reasoning.
Have a cream soda is you want a mild drink.
I think i just dislike peppermint but the feeling of methols is better. Like a texan plain but you can still breath for the rest of the day.
Great answer.
bro i wanna sit down with Katt like this and just figure out the fkin world . my dude is patient , observant , and concise asf.... let's smoke down brother
Katt is so well spoken
The question of why menthol cigarettes are more popular among Black Americans is complex and rooted in historical, social, and economic factors. It's important to approach this topic with sensitivity and an understanding of the broader context of tobacco marketing and its impacts on different communities. Here are some key points to consider:
Targeted Advertising: For decades, tobacco companies have specifically targeted Black communities with marketing for menthol cigarettes.
I'm addicted to Air, I can't live without it.
We like our cigs like our koolaid . Concentrated 😭😭😭🤷🏾♂️
Because that's what Newports are
This is why we love katt. Honest answers, spreading knowledge.
Made sense to this white dude
Back in the early 90s in st louis you would smoke a big Philly blunt with dirt weed and then smoke a Newport Square. The Newport was like a extra high. For many years I smoked Newport menthol or kools only because that's what you smoked after a fat blunt
lol 😂 My friend use to do the same thing but with a Garcia Vega instead of a Philly
Yep. You get the the high of the weed kicking in and then the rush of nicotine which increases the high. Close to euphoric
That was the best.
1998 was a great time to be alive.
Menthol cigarettes are banned in the United Kingdom also
Flavoured, disposable vapes however are not.
My Uncle smoked Cameos in Canada. Strong smokes, they werent bad I bummed plenty off him in his day.
Wtf did I just see, Katt took a min to say nothing, and Joe was speechless.
You're not smart enough to understand his "nothing"
What's crazy is they used to put fiber glass in the filters knowingly...
Being from Georgia I liked his answer on Mint since we used to have a lot of it wild in the garden.
I’m white and smoked menthol cigs for 17yrs
This comment section is mad weird
I love Katt answer
Yeah nah, if you dont feel the smoke hitting your lungs you can smoke stronger cigarettes, or go to a doctor ASAP.
When i smoked sometimes id get menthols and often times camel crush because they had a nice smooth kick to them and good flavor. For a cigarette, anyway.
I think alot of people like that cool inhale when u inhale the smoke. Simple answer..
Thank you, i can proceed to the next video
@@wed3k That wasn't the answer Katt gave!
I think and I’m 60 yrs old
Newports been out for a long time just like malt liquor beer… it’s a generation thing people copy one another over the years being friends, relatives plus it’s your upbringing and where you were brought up at, especially in the urban areas
