      Flawless Sabrina said that in the early 70's Crystal apologized for her tirade. She admitted she was consumed with jealousy of Harlow's realness and beauty to such a degree that she became very depressed. She also apologized to Harlow herself. whatever the case, Harlows win most certainly did NOT happen because of race or anything else, and it sure as hell didn't jump -start the NYC ballroom scene. It's sad that THIS is the only thing that exists of Crystal on film.

    • @dubsideproductions2859
      @dubsideproductions2859 5 років тому +93

      mrlopez2681 Just because she apologized doesn’t mean she was wrong. Crystal was condemning the clear fix and racism going on here. Harlow looked a mess and didn’t even have a wig until last minute and was being bratty the whole time. She did not deserve to win. Racism was common at these pageants and THATS why the ballroom scene exists in the first place. Don’t speak on things you don’t know about.

I have watched this clip probably hundreds of time but I've never fought the racist comments being made towards her towards the end. The other Queen stood up for her and said don't tell her not to show her color. It is no secret the pageants pageant have notoriously been racist and for the longest time would not give them any praise whatsoever or put them in the final and especially not win. You know the most troubling and heartbreaking part of the whole thing is? You can tell that Queens of color at this time would never get the recognition that they deserve no matter how good or beautiful they were. They would even resort to wearing white foundation and even bleach their skin just to get what little recognition they did get. So heartbreaking honestly. "show your color" is just a really old phrase meaning to show ones true nature. The person was just telling her to stop going off because pageant queens were expected to fake a smile and be gracious even when they lose. Maybe Crystal recognized the double entrendre, but I wouldnt put it on the guy who said it. Although Crystal was absolutely justified because the whole situation was still about racism in the end.

    That ‘show your color’ comment made every bit of Crystal’s point stick. I still rememeber first watching this and thinking “how entitled and bitter is she?”… then after that racist crap was said, immediately going into “Yes! Queen! Give it to them from all directions!” History was made. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

    I LOVE this documentary I’ve watched a couple times, I love that we get to see a young pepper lebeija before she was pepper lebeija. I wonder if she took her name from Crystal by them becoming close after this or she just happened to pick it up and coincidentally Chrystal had the name too 🤔. Anywho, fave and nobody reads like Chrystal Lebeija READS 😂❤️

      Elektra acts and sounds just like Crystal LaBeija. Even though Pepper was the mother of House of LaBeija when they filmed _Paris is Burning_ , which _Pose_ is based on. Another thing to consider is Pepper LaBeija was against sexual reassignment surgery. Elektra is transgender, so it makes more sense that they’d base her character on Crystal instead of Pepper.
