The Years is one of the best autobiographies which run in parallel with collective memories, both historical but also capturing minute moments people are living through that are meaningful only to them, while history as a whole marches inexorably forward. What a fantastic book, and what a treat to have an interview with the author about it. The interpreter was incredible!
No, she does NOT deserve the Nobel prize. Her work is NOT inspiring. She does not invent anything. There is NO imagination in her works, which are just some sorts of documenteri. VERY boring. A very self sentered work... and person, hardly décent at times. On top of it all, like so many French people, she does not speak a word of English... and you call such a person "tâcher"!!! 😠
A translator is often a traitor. The original French version is better. Perhaps because French is more melodious than English. I saw the same with "100 Years of Solitude." The English translation was bad, yet the French version was able to catch the Spanish soul. Probably, because French and Spanish have Latin roots. However, on the whole, I didn't like Ernaux's book. The excerpt in the video is beautiful, but her book is written without souls. I forced myself to keep on reading it hoping I will find the multiple scintillas that explode in other French, Spanish, and English classic books. Since I myself wrote two books, one nearly similar to Ernaux where I mixed my sex biography as a prostitute for one year with my childhood fairy tales, I don't understand all fuss she makes about sex and men. I always felt that my misfortunes were my fault not anybody else faults even the three men who raped me for which I had to extirpate a 3-month fetus with the help of a black alley abortionist with no anesthesia. To me, this woman is a want-to-be bourgeoise crying behind her Woke tendencies. There are many women like this in France: the bourgeoises who rebelled in May 1968 revolution and wrote books. They are responsible for what is happening now. Ernaux's 2022 Nobel Prize has a definitive political agenda. In the end, I thank all men who helped me in my life even the Johns who treated me well.
I think she has written about HER emotional response to what was happening in her life or around it. She herself says her books were not written as commentary on men or as judgement of those kinds, not as critiques, rather she wrote whatever she felt when she was going through something, feelings can be anything, right or wrong but at the end of the day they are just feelings. She felt differently than you does not make her feelings less valid or real or justified and vice versa. You can try reading her book from a perspective of a girl going through a world dominated with shame and men and how the girl feels in that particular frame of reference. Art is all about perspective and time too. Your circumstances were different, hers different. You can choose to be thankful to men even when you got raped, she chooses to write about resentment for them. Both perspectives are acceptable.
@@LaFanfanTulipe i guess you are directing towards the fact that her writing in French is less emotional or poetic and more mathematical in nature, she is more of a doctor disecting a moment which is basically, because of the fact that women writers in the past like sylvia plath have been criticised for writing too sentimentally or emotionally. She says she wanted to be not as much involved in her writing in a conventional way but write more with and indifferent voice, separating herself from herself, while still writing about herself that gives her writing this bland texture. But i get what you might be saying.
@@artcountry7062 She is not a doctor less mathematical. I wanted to get a degree in mathematics, but my company asked me to get a degree in sciences and major in accounting so I could take the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. The whole Nobel prize is a political fraud. Her voice is not indifferent; it's plainly stupid. If I were her, I would be ashamed of myself.

congratulations Annie Ernaux !! For winning Noble Prize 2022
That interpreter deserves just as much praise as Ernaux!

Thank you for uploading this interview and sharing it with the world, such an amazing book, mesmerizing interview, this is sheer joy
GIGANTE Annie ❤️
We are eager to know about her literature. We know very little of her writings here in Bangladesh.
Deserves to win the Nobel. Her memoirs are better and less self indulgent than Knausgaard's.... A fan here from the Philippines.
Precise prediction
You are a wise man!!

@@francoisvigour220 why should she know English...English n'est pas Important
You called it!

Hooray! I have the gift of Nostradamus!
A becoming of age story?

@@artcountry7062 But her writing in French is atrocious. I couldn't read more than ten pages.
