Ahhhh 1980, the year I turned 12, got into hard rock and got my first guitar and started learning to play. These albums were the catalyst for much of my life. Excellent video, thank you!🎸
I also was 12 in 1980 and was just discovering the rock and metal music scene . I still remember where I was when I first heard some of these bands and songs .
Just heard the news about Di'Anno, a true pioneer. His vocals were like no other at the time, unabashedly forging Punk & Metal. You'll be missed Paul, thanx for the music & being part of the great memories of my youth.
@@guitarmeetsscience Yeah man I was watching your video before I saw the comments and my bud texted me that he passed, blew my mind. Great stuff on your channel btw, keep em comin bro!
1980 was amazing for rock ! Lots of stunning hard rock classics flooded the 12 months ! AC DC - Black Sabbath - Saxon - Iron Maiden - Michael Schenker - Whitesnake - Rush - Scorpions to name but a few .
Man, this is quickly becoming one of my fav channels on UA-cam. Love these 30+ min documentaries about the rock scene of yesteryear. The research alone is impressive. I e always been one of those guys who knows a ton of useless classic rock info, and I still learn things watching this stuff. Makes me very nostalgic for my youth, even tho I was 3 yrs old in 1980. lol
Wow man - thank you so much! I'm really glad you like this stuff, and it's always good to meet fellow folks who dig into the nostalgia. I appreciate the compliment, much much appreciated!!!
I was 14 in 1980. Grew up listening to my Uncle's records and 8-tracks, Zeppelin, Floyd, Bad Company. Then the 80s handed me a smorgasbord of rock and metal.... couldn't have asked for more.
The first Maiden album is epic just as it is. I remember buying it at a record store In Zweibrucken Germany when my dad was stationed overseas. The rawness of the mix does not take anything away from all the talent. On the contrary, it’s brash and in your face. Just like the music itself. Perfect. RIP Clive Burr and Paul Di’anno. I was 14 in 1980. What an epic time.
It's really unbelievable the amount of major world events that occured in the 1980's and it was definitely a great time for the arts and it's still one of my favorite music decades! :-)
@@deanmorris9266 That’s right! Dayton! Swear I thought it was the Gardens for some reason. Which makes sense because I would have been about an hour or so from Florence Ky.
Saxon, Iron Maiden, the Scorpions of course, Black Sabbath I actually liked Dio singing over Ozzy, needless to say AC/DC with Johnson(which is a group I've seen both as openers and as headliners and so so many times, Van Halen was great, a bit of Motorhead, then with Ozzy on his own my God that was a great year. I was in 6th grade that year, one of my teachers and our music teacher was into some good music along with my regular teacher. It was the year that my life changed because of music. 44 years and each and everyone of these groups I still listen to and have seen them in concert with getting to see Black Sabbath with both Dio as singer and Ozzy as singer plus both of them on their own, multiple times, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, multiple times then Saxon once maybe twice and Motorhead twice. I played and learned saxophone in 5th grade so I learned to read music, but my brother's electric guitar, a Gibson, I remember sneaking into his room to hold it. I would take out his guitar lessons and practice them when he was not around that music and that guitar changed my life.
The only 2 bands I never saw out of these are Iron Maiden for some reason. And Saxon. But it was a great time to be a teenager listening to this great music.
Bonzo was a terrible loss in America more than anywhere. Led Zeppelin considered Dinosaurs STILL we're huge in America in 80. And don't let anyone tell you any different Led Zeppelin 💯% the most popular band of the 70's and no other band was close. RIP John Henry Bonham
I was 19/20 when Bon Scot, John Bonham, and John Lennon died. Though I read about Bon's death in the news. I remember hearing about the other two on the radio. It was very sad. Especially Bonham and Bon as I wasn't much of a Beatles fan . AC/DC is the first rock band I saw at a concert in 1977 they opened up for Kiss. It was my first of many concerts.

Ok I know that any time someone makes a list that it's going draw all kinds of criticism that is mostly subjective and opinionated as well as driven by personal biases. However, I don't make arguments that can't be backed up and the fact that RUSH did not make the end of this list ahead of some of the others like Saxon is really straining the credibility of the choices. Not only did RUSH release PERMANENT WAVES in 1980 that by itself was a masterpiece and display of aficionado level musicianship by all three members but as we know it was the precursor to MOVING PICTURES which was a shot heard around the world that catapulted them to an illustrious four decade run that unlike even most of the biggest names and music they were able to do on their own terms without any input or pressures from the record companies. RUSH is also the only band in history that ever turned down an invitation to Ozzfest! Sharon Osborne even offered them to pretty much write their own ticket and do whatever they wanted in order to get them to say yes and they still politely declined because they just didn't need to do it they were made men. But let's also not forget that Geddy Lee Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart certainly had much more influence on the entire generation of amateur and professional musicians to come then several of the bands in the beginning of this video combined. I've seen the comments digging on Rush fans saying we're all a bunch of nut jobs that think Rush is everything and always want them to be on lists or higher and rankings and I understand there's some truth to that but that doesn't apply here because my arguments are solid as a rock and the statistics back it up. Aside from everyone's opinions or arguments about them the last thing I want to say is that although Neil or any other band members never said anything specifically in public I think it's very safe to say that LIMELIGHT was written in very very large part as a response to what happened to Bon Scott and John Bonham 🤔
Well first I'll have it be known that I really like this comment you left! Second, yeah I hosed this one horrendously you know why? Because not only did I miss permanent waves, but I also missed British steel. Slap on forehead to yours truly, this video creator. PS Rush fans rule!!!
Artistic movements are fairly representation of the time.We can compare to it a social circuit of culture where the art follows the society and its articial acts. So all kind of artistic engagement is clearly a readaptation of artistic elements blossomed into social environment.
@@guitarmeetsscience yeah, I just realized that after scrolling down a bit. Glad I didn’t lay into too hard . 🤣. 1980 was an amazing year for rock/metal. Oh yeah - and the '80s continued to intensify in all sorts of strange ways. But 1980 really kicked off that decade in such a unique way. What a decade!

Almost all the big rock acts from the 60's/70's went down the toilet in 1980 or so, some got as far as 83 but pretty much after that it was like all they were doing was trying to make back all the money they lost in the 70's. Their music just became terrible. Most of the popular music of that decade was horrible as well. Absolutely hated the vast majority of popular music in the 80's. However as an extreme metal/punk enjoyer the decade was awesome. Funny enough I thought Maidens Eddie was female when I first saw that album, I mean they are called Iron MAIDEN.
