No, car companies are *not* trying to improve security because at the end of the day car companies know if your car gets stolen, you're buying another car at some point, either by insurance or by yourself and car thieves aren't their customers so they wouldn't have gotten money from selling to them anyway.
In short, we're on our own to find solutions, don't wait for car companies to provide meaningful solutions for you.
Easy fix. Put everyone at the Port Authority in jail. They're corrupt. Thousands of cars leaving Canada? How? Corruption!

GM cars have been able to be remote disabled for over a decade. Was not a fan of how they wenr push to start instead of an immobilizer key. But I guess with onstar that kind of moot anyway.
Wrong. I got two Chrysler 300 stolen in 3 years. I'll never buy another one of those Chrysler, Jeep, RAM or Dodge pieces of junk again.
Technically insurance pays out but they also raise premium because of that.. so customers end up holding the bag.. I think I would consider more secure car over unsecure one on my next purchase.
They need to make lethal security devices for vehicles, it would certainly solve the problem much faster.
I love the energy of your idea, but that would never happen because there's always the worry about a lethal response going off for a legitimate car owner

Drugs used to be the lucrative business, but the problem is, the penalties for dealing drugs is very steep. Car theft, on the other hand, is just as profitable and worth the risk. Maybe they should consider increasing the sentences for car theft?
No the penalties for dealing drugs in Canada are not steep at all, I don't know who told you that. Our government literally gives away narcotics for free in many places.
@Brett733 Oh, I totally agree, but at the time the shift from drugs to car theft started, (about 30 years ago), we actually had laws and stiff penalties for drug dealing.
...and we are talking about organized crime...the street kind, not the political kind.
In arab country, they use to cut off your hand for stealing. Prison time was too costly for tax payers! A little drastic I admit but perhaps starting with the little finger might make a thief think twice about doing it again and again and again!

I also found a way. I bought a K-car. I could leave it parked anywhere with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition.

Yes, many levels of security help to prevent car thieves but it could also be inconvenience for the the owner to go through disabling all these extra securities before he/she can drive use it.

Don't you all think everything is managed that's why it's easy to steal the car from anywhere in Canada, easy to take it to dockyard via road, then no security check up or clearance at sea level and car is gone. Dont you all think, not just thieves but system is also helping them.
If only the accountability aspect was severe enough (or even just existent in some places) to make most rethink being a scumbag thief. Historically everywhere, or currently in some parts of the world it seems to be quite a bit different.

Yep, I think it’s called a relay theft. Boost the signal to another suspect at the car unlocking the doors.
Yup. Antenna scanning for the key FOB. Keep your keys in a shielded Faraday type box or pouch to defeat that one bit. Unfortunately, one aspect of many ...

Some cars will loose their ECU idle, crank position, and fuel trim leaning parameters. The ECU will have to relearn every day. May or may not be an issue. Depends on the car.

Crazy idea, way outside the box here... require the use of a small piece of machined metal to start the car instead of a freakin' button!!! Push button start solved a problem that didn't exist, and only made things easier for thieves.

A rather simple solution is to go for older model vehicles without all these tech! Alternatively , get the tech being exploited disabled , if possible !
Imo automobile companies are paying off theives to basically total cars, goal is to buy a newer car with remote controllable ignition. Happening in the USA
