Cattle handling draws on many roots - France, Canada, Africa Spain, with a little Texas thrown in, too. Here muddy marshlands, drenching rains, and vicious hurricanes wield their influence on horses, saddles and the intrepid cowboys who ride them. So when it comes to gear, practicality rules. In this country, a cow can thrive on an acre of grass. But a rider better pay attention when checking those cows - those gators can spook your horse if one is caught by surprise. We were cattlemen in Acadia and then in Louisiana. We used to drive cattle over the basin over a log jam so tight it was a road. We drove them to Texas to be put on trains to the Great Lakes Area. Louisiana can produce 1 head of cattle per acre. Texas is lucky if they can do 1 per 10 acres. The Louisiana prairie was a sea of cattle.

Grew up working those high horn brahma cross cattle. Got to help move 400 head from Cameron to Hackberry. I think it was 28 miles, in the late 70's.

In Louisiana they are known as a "Vacher" (Vash-ay) or "Bouvier" (Boovee-yay) from the French for cowboy. "Vachere" (Vash-are) is a cowgirl, "Vache" (Vash) is a cow, "Vacherie" (Vash-ayree) is a cattle ranch, "Vacheur" (Vash-ure) is a cattle rancher.
