Proctor & Gamble also has an entertainment production company. Originally known as Proctor & Gamble Productions (now Proctor & Gamble Entertainment) they produced (and sponsored) many daytime dramas (soap operas) first on radio, starting in the 1930's and later on television. Many classic soap operas were produced by Proctor & Gamble Productions including:
The Guiding Light (1937-56 on radio; 1952-2009 on television)
    As the World Turns (1956-2010)
The Brighter Day (1948-56 on radio; 1954-62 on television)
    The Edge of Night (1956-84)
    Search for Tomorrow (1951-86)
    Another World (1964-99)
    Somerset (1970-76)
    Texas (1980-82).

Which is exactly where the term "soap operas" came from. Because, the shows were either sponsored by, or featured commercials advertising cleaning products. They definitely knew their audience, since it was mostly housewives.

I was actually really excited when I saw you FINALLY uploaded a P&G episode!! When I was a teenager (like 10 years ago), I learned on my own how absolutely huge P&G is. I was fascinated by how they like to feature they're brands within their other brands (like a crossover product haha). So I'm gonna do my best to write as many brands as I can:
Covergirl, Olay, Head & Shoulders, Old Spice, Febreze, Charmin, Tide, Gain, Downy, Herbal Essence, Swiffer, Glad, Crest, Bounce, Bounty, Gillette/Venus, Puffs, and Vicks
And I promise I didn't cheat! Like I said, I was obsessed with finding out how many brands P&G actually contains and discovering their crossovers (i.e. Covergirl foundation with Olay moisturizer, Head & Shoulders with the scent of Old Spice, etc)

Procter and Gamble were also the biggest producers of TV soap operas. The nickname “soap opera” is from the fact that P&G’s biggest products were soap related. The soaps they produced over the years include Guiding Light, Search For Tomorrow, The Edge Of Night, As The World Turns, Another World, Somerset and Texas, among many others. P&G Productions was officially dissolved when their last remaining soap opera, As The World Turns, went off the air in September 2010.

And let’s lot forget the television production arm of P&G, which made daytime soap operas like As The World Turns, Guiding Light and Another World.

P&G used to have "tiers" of products - one more expensive level (tier 1) and one budget level (tier 2): Level 1 detergents were Tide and Cheer; Level 2 was Gain, Oxydol and Dash. Level 1 bathroom tiissue was Charnin and Level 2 was White Cloud. They also marketed products to address specific uses: For bar soap, Ivory was the natural option, Camay was a beauty soap, Zest and Safeguard were deoderant soap, and Lava ("with pumice") was a tough hand soap marketed kids and blue collar workers. The company also infamously produced Rely tampons, which were pulled from the market after women died from toxic shock syndrome caused by the product. As someone who watched a number of P&G soaps, most of their commercials in the 60s-80's were very tightly written "stories" that introduced a problem that was solved by a P&G product within 30 seconds. These commercials also produced memorable product mascots like Mrs. Olsen (Folger's), Mr. Whipple (Charmin) and Josephine the Plumber (Comet cleanser).

Proctor & Gamble became massive because they were easily the largest advertiser in the USA. They had huge presence on both radio and TV, and in fact for several decades owned the production for several daytime TV "soap operas." (Indeed, the very name _soap opera_ came from the fact P&G owned the production of these shows outright.) They're still a major advertiser, and if you go to any supermarket, Walmart or Target store, you'll be surprised how many P&G products are on the shelves.

All of PG's early products involved the use of animal fats. This is no coincidence. Cincinnati had a tremendous excess of animal byproducts due to the booming meatpacking industry in the city at the time. Several other famous food and hygiene brands from hot dogs to shampoos rose from the same part of the city's west end near the giant stockyards and rail-yards. Animal byproducts were and still are used in a multitude of products. The stockyards are gone but the brands remain. This is at least part of the reason why more famous household brands were born in Cincinnati than anywhere else in the world.

Still a huge company, and you have indeed impressed us with how huge they really are, but it seems they only currently own maybe a quarter of the brands you mentioned, having sold the vast majority. It's seems they're almost more of an investor than a manufacturer (although they also invest in manufacturing facilities, many of which I'm sure they sell when selling the related brand) acquiring smaller companies for 5-10 years then selling at a gain. An incredibly valuable portfolio.

They were best known for their popular soap operas in both television and radio from the likes of Guiding Light and As the World Turns which they both aired on CBS. Heck, they even sponsored their own brands during their soap operas. Too bad that Procter & Gamble shut down their television arm in 2010.

I think we'd be remiss if we didn't bring up a huge part of P&G's legacy portfolio, daytime television serial dramas (aka soap operas). They were a giant force in daytime TV, producing and sponsoring such shows like "Guiding Light", "As The World Turns", "Search for Tomorrow", "Another World", and "The Edge of Night", all of which were television staples from the 50s up til at least the 80s. In fact, the term 'soap opera' came from the fact that P&G sponsored so many daytime dramas.

Maybe do food chains that have risen and fell. Big Boy was once nation-wide, now a few clusters. Most are remnants of former franchises and others exist in various capacities. And there are remaining ones in Japan.
Mister Donut was once a nationwide doughnut chain in the US, now bought out and absorbed by Dunkin' Donuts in the 90s. The chain still thrives in Japan.

Big Boy is still a huge chain in the US, but they vary by region. Lots of new stores have been opening up in the past few years.

I love Mister Donut. It's the best place to get a donut here in Japan but had no clue it was first in America. Same with Lawson's.

Too many to list but I have bought about 26 of their products. Had to go online to look at what they currently have and what you have mentioned.

Actually P&G started the SOAP OPERA format and their ad agency coined the term. Also they produced the episodes of quite a few of them for decades on their PGP (Procter & Gamble Productions) subsidiary.

In Minnesota we had dupont for whites and filtech for blacks in the basement of dupont. Which company do the blacks work for under proctor and gamble?

I remember dating a guy in the late 90’s and his mother used to rant to me about why she boycotts P&G. At the time I just wrote her off as an old lady complaining to complain. Mainly cause I used quite a few of the brands they made. I honestly can’t remember why she boycott them or if she still does today.
    Nice video. :)

many people used to boycott p&g because their old logo looked like a "satanic" or "freemason" symbol (i think) and they used to think they were evil and controlling their consumers in some way. it was a conspiracy theory thing.

The corporate symbol is actually pretty cool and is on their building downtown Cincinnati. The church people went after it in the 1980s🙄
