wow. Felt like i was transported back in time to when Kai was starting digitalrev. Full of energy, full of passion, full of life.
You’ve always reminded me of Top Gear but for photography
You need to specify... you mean it makes you think of the old top gear... comparison to the new top gear, that would be an insult!
Lol to be fair Tim do look like the similar type to me: thin, wear glasses, Chinese. And handsome. Also awww baby Wong still remember me!
I love how you Incorporate different cinematic shots in your videos, it gives such a nice feel to the video as a whole. Please keep up these great videos!
I love your videos dude, those visuals and that music, super soothing!
Absolutely love this lens and focal length. Some of my favorite portraits and travels pics come from this lens, it's so easy to throw in my bag and always have on hand. Just wish it was an affordable f/2.0 or stabilized.....one day.

@@KaiManWong I didn't know until today that there are such ultra wide lenses in the market like 5mm or 6mm. 🤔
1:32 Look at the store name it's Kai's long lost brother, Wong Kei
lol. IIRC Won Kei is a restaurant whose shtick is rude waiting staff. Kinda like a Japanese tsundere cafe but with gruff dudes I guess.
I've been looking for you on DRTV and i couldn't find any new videos but im glad i found that youve made a channel because I used to watch DRTV years ago and just binged every video but now you are back!
I love your content man. Seriously delightful and funny stuff!
That's why I got the 24mm 2.8 for my 100d. It is sorta around that 40mm equivalent (actually 38.4 mm equivalent) and I love just having that tiny setup with such a useful focal length.
This is actually true in my experience as well. I shoot M43 and have a number of different lenses. The 20mm f1.7 pancake (40mm equivalent) is what I always come back to... And I have both a 50mm equiv and a 35ishmm equiv....both with big apertures.
It is impressive how well your work holds up over the years. I recently picked up a 40mm F2 lens and it works extremely well, for all the reasons you cite.
Awesome. I have been hoping for another 5 reasons lens video for a while. These are my most favorite videos of you.
I was so undecided between a 35mm off brand, and a 40mm canon. Already having a 50mm Canon, this review did it for me. I'm going with the 40mm Canon, thank you for helping me make a hard decision.
Yeah! FUJINON XF27mm F2.8 most underrated lens!
Lok. Love it! Kai, your videos and photos are awesome! I always get a chuckle out of them. Keep up the good work!
thanks for the effort and the sharing. as someone who shoots m43, i have long been thrilled with the panasonic 20mm/1.7 - fast and wide! thumbs up.
Have always liked 38-42mm rangefinders for many of the reasons you mention in regards to the focal length. But these days, and even more so as home scanning/post-processing continuously improves whether digital or film, I think 21-28mm on full frame is the most ideal. Just crop what you need. Otherwise I'd have to agree.. straight out of camera 38-42mm is the McGyver of full frame focal length.
PEDENTAX! *dying here!
Bless you for being here man.
KNOWLEDGE & KICKS!
Thank you for a very nice review! I have used 40 mm lenses since the days of Minolta CLE.
Continued to use it on my Leicas! Never owned a 35 mm lens! When the mft came along
I bought a GF1 with a 20 mm (40 mm ff) f 1,7. Still in daily use, superb lens. Bought a new GF1
a few days ago and it gives the 20 a new lease of life. Use many other focal ranges with my GX7.
Regards and keep up the good work, Ulf
This perfectly sums up why the using the old 20mm 1.7 on M43 consistently makes me smile. Thanks for freezing your fingers to make this feel good video.
Kai uploads? You click that mug...it's a no brainer!!🔥🔥🔥
I miss Lok.
@Regular Sean - You do know that Lok has his own channel now...right?
@Lok Cheung - BTW - Nice one Lok!
Yes, I know. I have been subbed to it for a while. I just miss Lok showing up in Kai's videos. It's like Seinfeld without Kramer. Cherry pie without ice cream. Pancakes without syrup.
@Regular Sean, yeah, I *completely* agree they were a funny team, and then put Alamby in the picture and it was magic. *Unfortunately* all good things must come to an end.
Kai, I really appreciate your funny and understandable way of putting photography/products in such a user friendly way. Thanks man! It’s annoying how really awesome names like yours get auto corrected into Mia. 🙃
Thanks for the info and the great review! It would be cool if you did a video on the best focal length for crop sensor cameras!
I was debating on this and the 35mm for my canon for a loooonng time, but I pulled the trigger about a month ago on the 40mm and I absolutely have no regrets.
I was so used to the zoom lense on my canon that the pancake was just a breath of fresh air. It’s pretty damn sharp and extremely light. It’s my main now.
Me too, I have a Sony A7RIV and couldn't decide on the 35mm 1.4 or Sony's 40mm f2.5. I knew I wanted the 40mm but I also wanted a fast lens. In the end, I felt I had to stick to my guns and get the 40mm as also the 35mm is just so damn big!! Over twice the size and I think nearly 3 times the weight and over twice the price!! I'm super happy now and know I made the right choice :)
Great video, great photos, great location, love the culture of the U.K., Happy Chinese New year. Also music and editing was on point! Thanks.
I have used the 28mm f2 on my a6500 for about a year now and I love it. Probably my main lens for filming
Per your recommendation, I bought the Pentax 40mm pancake last year cause of your old digitalrev video. I love it! Not only is it a great lens I've had so many people ask me about it cause it's so small.
It is often forgotten that the Pentax DA40/2,8 are able to be uses on full frame - I enjoy the DA40XS on my K1 - looks like I've forgotten my lens ;-)
Finally the 40mm gets some love. I love this focal length. the Voigtländer Nokton 40mm 1.4 was basicaly married to my a7 untill the Voigtländer 40mm Nokton 1.2 came along. But I still own both.
Please do a review about the relatively new Voigtländer Nokton 40mm 1.2.
Always entertaining. I came here for nice tips and humor and was not disappointed! :D
Loved the way you played the dog footage with the conclusion of this review. Great stuff. :)
The 40mm is great on a full frame but on an APS-C it's stuck in No man's land. On my APS-C I use the Canon 24mm f2.8 pancake lens instead along with the 50mm f1.8 for portraits. The 24 pancake is the perfect all purpose (landscapes, street et all) lens.
I wish Canon released a 18mm or 20mm pancake, much better focal length in my opinion.
upgrade to full frame :) 6D is as low as 700$ used, and 5D mark I can be found as low as 200$. I found a 5D mark I with a 24-105 mark ii for only 630$ once on eBay. And believe me, full frame is worth it. Even the original 5D does incredibly in low light. The 5dmk2 can be found for roughly the same price as the 6D as well. All three of those options are incredible.
I have the 6D and I enjoy it so much, best value for money if you want a full frame camera for photos
Zairon, voigtlander is making 20mm f3.5 for FF cameras. I have one, and it is fantastic little lents for landscapes.
@Ken I use exactly the same as you on my 80D. Would like to upgrade to full frame though - maybe next year.
Great video. Entertaining as always.
wow what a great video. Im going to take your advice when I get my first body in hand
I agree, the 40mm is a great focal length to shoot overall. This Canon 40mm pancake is good on 6D and the LUMIX 20mm is good on the mirrorless cameras
The Panasonic 20mm is my favouritest lens of all time. Too bad I somehow can't find the perfect body for it anymore...
I currently use the Panasonic GX8 and GX85 and both are pretty good with the 20mm. I think I like it better with the GX85
I use the lumix 20mm a lot and it's nice on my gx85 and my em1.2 No focus shift and 40mm is so useful.
Falena The crop factor for the A6000 is 1.5x so a 25mm lens would be close to 40mm, just a tad wider. I’m not too familiar with Sony lenses, but a 25mm lens would be a close equivalent at 37.5mm focal length. A 28mm lens would be 42mm.
Another excellent presentation peppered with the perfect amount of humor. Years ago you said to get the 35mm, now it's the 40? Does that 5mm difference really mean that much? :)
You're right! He sold me on the Nikon AF-s Nikkor 35mm 1:1.4G I won't be changing to a 40mm anytime soon.
Nice video Kai, love the signature music.
Yes my favourite focal length. All through the 1980s my camera of choice was a Rollei 35s with a Zeiss 40mm f2.8 Sonnar, it was the perfect travel camera. I have this year tried to recreate the experience by fitting my Leica T with a Voightlander 28mm f2 lens. Happy again ;-)
I always enjoy this bloke's cheeky smartassishness.
40ish mm love from me!
28mm on crop
Oly 35sp for rangefinder film (yum)
Nice. Just bought this lens last week. Stoked to take it out on some video shoots.
Good to see you with your canon in your hand again !
ah! I was sad to see you go from digital rev but glad to somehow have had you recommended again!
Great video! As always!
Baby Lok 😊
Hang on I only bought a 50mm prime cause you said "that was the best focal length"..... cmon man my girlfriend is gonna kick my ass if I need "another".
@@hieuphungminh6690 shoot some nice instagram pics for her and it should be cool
Thanks for the tip. Got myself one and I`m loving it. 💖
Nice videos! Really enjoyed them and they're really helpful
I LOVE YOU MAN ♥
YES FINALLY 40mm (28mm APS equiv.) is finally on the radar!!!
It's good to see you with your fans and subscribers on the street.
I have been in London last week, would be fun to see You! :D Nice video!
I just bought a 5D "classic" as a permanent home for my 40mm.
Yeah it’s a great cam. I bought 1Ds Mark iii. Released around similar time.
Nice video, hope you can Review the Lumix gx9
Beautiful shots, picture and video!
Love that shot of the bike statue .....good job. The 40mm pancake is a no brainer. I use it as a lens cap since it's more useful and sometimes it's the best lens.
Fuji has a 27mm 2.8 on APSC making it 40.5mm equiv. ;)
My favourite +40mm lens:
Pentax 43mm 1.9
Great video Kai! Awesome to see your shots of Chinatown as I didn't manage to get down there this weekend. :-) Oh watch out for them dogs though if you're smothering your knackers in shellfish! Lol
I agree with your perspective that 40mm is a suitable focal length for street shooting, I myself use a modified Leica m coupling 40mm F/2.4 which was removed from the Leica Minilux, and it performs really great in my Leica M9
Personally I like a long hot dog lens
the old canon 80-200 f/2.8L is yours then. A long, burnt hot dog with a ketchup ring!
Randomly takes hundreds of photos of people in the street.
Asks to take photo of the doggy.
Dogs>people.
😁😁❤❤
@@ThatWasPrettyFunny Dumbest comment ever :'D
He asked, 'cause with this focal lengh he couldnt take a picture of the dog without the owner clearly recognizing.
Great video Lok!
Kai, Lok and your crews, Happy Chinese New Year!!
Amen to this! My 40mm equivalent is my desert island prime.
so 20mm is the best lens for m4/3 ? :D
Nah. The best standard is same as the diagonal length across your image sensor. Hence why he said 43mm and Pentax in this video and also the digitalrev 5 reasons 35mm video.
@@KandiKlover diagonal length of m43 is 22mm so 20mm is not that far off.
Fujifilm has a 27mm f2.8 which is 41mm equivariant -and on a small mirrorless body is so subdued and compact 💛
I miss these street exploring/review videos. Keep killin it 💪🏽
@jaycase
This video made me put my panasonic 20mm on my EM1 MKii. Thanks for the vid Kai!
95% talking shit 5% photos. still love you
Fuji has the 27mm f2.8 witch with crop factor turn into a 40,5mm, They almost almost almost almost almost make the 40mm focal lenght
Great work from Lok with the video.
Agree. It's the best compromise. And there are some awesome 40s out there - the Voigtlanders, the Nikon one, the Minolta if you like rangefinders ...
That's the reason I use the Tamron 45mm on my D850
I have this lens, but only because 50 is too tight on my crop sensor. I didn't want to go wide angle so this was my compromise. In hindsight though even 40 is too tight still. So I bought a 30mm sigma which I'm liking, even if it's sharpness isn't as good.
The Canon 24 is a fantastic street and indoor lens, I bought one last week and used it a lot at an event in a hotel this past weekend, it was a lot of fun.
I agree. I used to have the 40 pancake, but on my crop sensor its too tight. Great size, but just wasn't finding use for it.
Yeah because you're actually using a 64mm equivalent which is too tight to be a "standard lens".
Yes, exactly, on a crop sensor the 24 is very nice (and is an EF-S mount so only usable on a crop sensor anyway)
John Ridley I would have gone with that if it were faster than 2 8. But I need better low light. 2.8 is ok, better than a kit, but still feels limiting.
Bought the crop equivalent 24mm pancake precisely for this, it’s an awesome little all-rounder! Took me a little time getting used to it since it’s not quite as wide as the 18-200 zoom and it’s not as closed-in as the 50 (on the crop sensor anyway), but it’s lovely when you frame things well in it
Now I'm craving a 40mm and another visit to the great city of London! Great job, Kai 😀
9:36 anyone else recognise that boy, some hypebeast i saw somewhere
literally just checking the comments to see if anybody else noticed him XD
panny 20/1.7 is one of the best 40mm equivalent in view, sharpness and bokeh amazing
I agree with you on the 40 being a great street lens. Bought an old Konica 40mm f1.8 and fell in love with the perspective. That led me to the voightlander 40mm f1.4. My favorite lens ...maybe of all time. Beautiful rendering crazy bokeh and sharp stopped down amazing color and fantastic black and white. It’s got some mojo. Anyhow 40mm is king for street !
I got the pancake lens back in the days because of your review, and it's still my absolute favourite
I clicked off of Jason Lanier's video so fast my finger hurts LMAO #NotificationGang
sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost the password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
Best photography/video/camera channel. So creative and easy watching
I literally just got this lens. And now I’m glad!
And this is why i LOVE the 20mm f1.7 pancake on my GH5. It doesnt have IS but the IBIS in the GH5 makes it a HECK of a lover.
You would be an amazing voice actor or radio person. You're B roll voiceovers are quality.
It's also a pretty tough lens. I accidently dropped mine at the top of Red Rocks Amphitheater and it rolled and bounced all the way the way to just a few rows from the stage (thankfully it was in the morning and not many people there). A nice gentleman caught it and gave it back to me. It still works, but has some scuffs and makes a little noise while focusing.
photos.google.com/search/lens/photo/AF1QipMUkbtAqHRxRVqD1mjLUurz0dW6k1ruIF10FikA
So I need to get a 20mm Prime for my M43
Another awesome upload!
I use a 40mm equivalente 20mm 1.7 pancake lens on my GH2 m43, and is by far my favorite lens for photos and the one I use the most. The middle ground FOV is just perfect for simply every situation. Only downside is the slow auto-focus speed.
Reason #6: it makes a great video title
and you can't lok the reasons
You’re jealous you didn’t choose it? He’s full of it. He wouldn’t drop the fitty.
One way to lok at it
*wideo
son of a bitch, that is the exact comment I was going to make... touche...
