- Here is an explanation of the procedure i use along with the rust proofing materials i use when i winterize my bike.Waxoil and Double TT from TETROSEAL!

Wow this was a revelation to me! We don't get salt on our roads thankfully (I guess if you lived near the beach it is in the air), so I have little use for the info. We just wash our bikes, dry them off then ride... Back in the seventies/eighties when bikes came with mild steel mufflers when new, we used to get them hot then spray the insides liberally with fish oil then go for another ride to bake it on. Smells like a fish shop for a while but my brother still has his '85 XJ900 with the original pipes and no rust!
I learned something new, top notch Mr. Fillingham! I'll try this method this coming winter to avoid making the Misses cross with me (I pulled my T120 into our flats hallway last winter). She was not happy about it. I thought I was quite clever till I was sleeping on the couch, ha!

Our climate in Johannesburg means winterizing is not necessary, but as you highlighted, some parts could just do with some form of protection to ward off oxidization. Great tips Stuart, thanks.
yeah ive had a few people in tropical climbs and coastal areas email me about this one apparently its not just cold wet climates that rot your bike!
In the 1980's we used to do an oil change just before winter and painted the old stuff onto everywhere except the tyres, grips and seat!
Worked a treat!
Come the warm weather we then painted the bike with jizer and bingo! A nice shiny bike for summer!
Wouldn't do that on my Triumph nowadays though.

I like your logic. I've been using AC50 for years and it has not stopped corrosion, mainly because I'm too damn lazy to keep reapplying the stuff. However, here's a tale. On the TDM the rear shock bush has had a habit of seizing and many owners have had a hard job removing them for replacement. But very early on I decided to apply Waxoil around all rear shock linkages. Now these guys all took great care of their bikes and they look a damn sight better than mine. But that's because they only use AC50 and reapply regularly. So come the day that I thought I better check my bushes, because I didn't want a failed one, it was absolutely fine and came out like a dream. No need to replace. So the AC50 is going to be history and I'm going to follow your method for winterizing. Good job.

A great vid. I worked for over 30 years in the motor trade (Body and paint shop) and totally agree with your comments about ACF50. I have and still use similar products 3M 08909 Cavity wax and Duck oil.
I remember putting waxoyl on my triumph spitfire and GT6 back in the olden days I worked then i had forgotten about it i will give it a try.
Yeah we get so engrossed in the latest products that we forget about the traditional methods that have worked just fine for years!
just ordered the Tetroseal tt, and I know the weather is picking up but! to have is a good thing, for the future.

Used to use waxoil on my first bike a Suzuki ER50 when I was 16. Forgotten all about it till now. My mate restored a Triumph Spitfire a few years later and I remember we pumped loads of the stuff into the wheel arches and hard to reach places.
Good stuff but I remember it being thick and gluey turning yellow if put on to thick. Def kept rust at bay though. I have found ACF50 works ok, I apply it via microfibre cloth and wipe on. Not had rust issues in 2yrs plus now on a bike that could clearly get it.
I found quite the opposite with ACF50, the results for the price are i think disappointing. and it attracts way too much dirt. waxoil is superior in every way and far cheaper, but i suppose that's why its still a top seller after more than 50yrs. Hi Stuart. Thanks for your videos, I’ve watched a lot now and thought I’d better say something. I’m a busy fellow with a full time job so find it difficult to get the time to comment on every one of your videos.
I’ve enjoyed a big majority of them and find them very interesting and informative. I had a giggle at the follicle challenged, don’t subscribe video to name a few. Loved the ton up boys video and likewise watched many others you’ve realest on your channel all of which I’ve enjoyed. Loving your new RE gt Continental, a superb bike along with your Intercepter.
I’ve only got one bike a Kawasaki Z900rs to care for but that’s my decision and have had many other bikes since the age of 16, I’m now 60 and wish I could retire. Every single bike I’ve owned I’ve loved with a passion and I doubt I’ll change now. You look after your bikes and good on you. You have also put me off owning a Triumph seeing what you’ve had to deal with.
One last thing! The roads you ride on are really crap! Regarding the farmers dragging their mud from the field to the road, so all the cleaning products you use will come in handy.

wish I hadve known about Tetraseal before I parked my KLE 500 beside my boat at the jetty for 3 years.
I used Waxoil to waterproof my trials boots- worked a treat👍

Hey Stuart, as you know I was really looking forward to this video as I commute as much as I can on my T120. Once again sir you have excelled. What a fantastic video, and just like the summer version I am now a convert to two new products. I will be preparing my T120 following your advice towards the end of this month and hopefully mine will look as good as yours. Thankyou again for all the time and effort you put into making such great short films. Oh and I loved the story about the old house - you'd got away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling kids!
Thank you paul , just dont leave it too long as the wax oil can be a pain to apply in cold weather. and save some spray caps off old aerosol cans, in cooler weather the nozzles can block with annoying frequency! the gt85 ones work well!
Hey Stuart - Process worked fine. I heated the can in hot water for about 30 mins and kept shaking every 10 mins. My can came with two nozzles which I tested on paper first. Use the bigger nozzle as this gives a finer spray. I covered my downpipes with dustsheets to keep excess spray off them - same with the brake disks when spraying the wheels. Other than that the spray applied nice and evenly. Couldn't get Double TT on Amazon - had to resort to E-Bay where it it was £5.50 with free postage. Many thanks again for the video - now my T120 is winter Fillingham'd!
Glad you got on with it ok Paul! just thought with it been a bit cooler you might have problems with the nozzles blocking up safe all you GT85 nozzles for future use when the cans are empty. she's all set for winter then, its easy enough to get off come spring, I suppose I should do a video nearer the time!
Yes please! I wasn't sure exactly when to remove the wax-oil and go back to GT85? So a video on how to remove would be good.

As usual, excellent advice. I'd never heard of these products before, and don't ride much in winter these days, but I see every reason to use them and nowt to criticise. Loved the story about the Speed Twin (great bikes) and entirely expected a coat of embalming fluid during the telling!

Thank you very much Peter, its nice to hear you enjoy the channel. even if you dont ride much in winter its still good to take precautions, bikes will still have a harder time in a cold damp garage than in summer.
@@stuartfillingham As night/day temperature cycles moisture from the air condenses on the cold metal as the damp morning air warms up. I've had success keeping a small coffee cup warmer under my vehicles in winter. Just a small constant air movement has meant the brake discs don't rust and the aluminum doesn't oxidize. The heaters I'm talking about come in sizes 17 to 23 watts (that I've seen in Canada). They are the same ones used in coffee makers. And they don't burn out like a light bulb on a cold winter's night! A caution: the mice like that environment. Moth balls or Bounce keeps them away though.
My abiding memory of Waxoyl from about 40-odd years ago is buying a gallon tin of it and spraying the inside of the doors, chassis members and other areas of my cars. Being white-spirit based you had to drive around with a headache and all windows open for about a month until the white spirit evaporated, leaving the wax. Good stuff, though. Looks like it has gone through a change of name since those “heady” days...

Back in the days when bikes came with chrome steel mudguards, the first thing I did was underseal them. These days, what mudguards there are, are plastic.
great video i used ACF 50 for years great results then went onto XCP i found all this was a thicker product to ACF .Think i will defiantly give this a try the others always leave a residue
Hi kate, ACF 50 is basically a thin grease in a can wax oil though not pretty, will last an entire winter or for years if you leave it on, without having to reapply!

I agree with you about these new products. Overpriced bullshit. That's from when I was in England. All I used to do was hose the bike down every time I got home in winter. But I lived in London most of my adult life, so not as much salt on the road as Yorks.
Well, nice! And, if one doesn't ride bike during wet and salty wintertime it goes well on the car underbody too, I might say...
Its still good practice mr dark, even if your bike is just left in a damp garage!

Stewart, you did say for winter use, use something like ACF50 instead of GT85 in Julys video on waxing and detailing. about 5:09 into the video. I didn't buy ACF50, I went with your recommendations today. I do enjoy your videos.

stuart fillingham thanks for the reply. One question I was going to ask, I've used the Muc off dry chain lube in the summer as per your previous video. Do you use a heavier chain lube in the winter?
Hi Richard I use the Castrol chain lube in winter although the muc off dry lube is fine if you only ride on nice days!

Thanks Stuart - Tetroseal seem to have discontinued the waxoil so you may need to update your recommendation...just purchased one of the last spray cans on ebay….
Yep.. You can't beat Wax oil for avoiding thoughs rusty nuts.. I also use silicone lubricating spray (not back to black) round & behind the clocks etc. I used to use WD40 but since they had to change the propellant formula to avoid CFCs, I don't think it is as good and actually evaporates in time as does GT85..
Hi Derick, yes GT85 is fine for summer use but you do need something a little heavier in the colder , wetter months. hence the Double TT or acf50 if you cant get it.
As legend has it , during the 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun's nearly intact ,embalmed body , they uncovered 8 empty tins and 1 full tin of Waxoil and a picture of the ladies husband . That full tin and the picture are now on display in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo . The chemical composition of this magical preservative elixir has still yet to be unraveled by modern alchemists .

I just use WD-40. It can be washed off with just water, but if you don't get the bike wet, it will last a very long time.

Another great video Stuart. I've had good results with the Muc-off products so I see another order going in for these as well. A couple of questions, if you don't mind.1) Did you strip the back end to get to the rear mudguard when you treated it or do it in situ ? 2) Have you ever had the tank off, to treat the frame etc ?One more thing - maybe a tip for some people. You mention cold & damp garages. I moved house recently and moved from one with a warm integral garage (the boiler was in there) to an external shed/workshop. I bought a pack of "Ansio* Internal Dehumidifiers" (about £13 for 10) to keep the shed dry and experimented by placing one on top of the handlebars before throwing the cover on the bike. I'm surprised by the amount of water that collects in the thing. They last for a couple of months and for £1.30 a time they seem worth it. (* other brands are available)
Hi there, I treated the rear fender in situ! all the parts you need access to are fairly easy to get at, also even when dry, wax oil does creep so during the summer months it will get itself in to any nooks you may have missed. yes in many ways leaving a bike in a cold damp concrete or brick garage can be as bad as leaving the bike outside all winter. cold surfaces quickly attract condensation, and with no air movement to dry it off it can linger and build up all winter, putting a cover over your bike can compound the matter even further! your idea with the humidifiers is a good one, but its hard to tell whether they would cope well enough to make a difference, opening your garage door every day for an hour or so, though not ideal, will help dry the condensation off the bike. but coating it in the manner I have described in the video will go a long way to protecting the bike from deterioration!

Hello Mr Fillingham! I'm part exchanging my 2010 Bonnie T100, which I bought used 4 years ago, for a new T120 which should be arriving by the end of the coming week. So I'm looking forward to giving the new bike the "Full Fillingham" treatment. One question though, you mention that you apply the waxoil & TT, then keep washing the bike regularly and reapply waxoil & TT as needed. But what about waxing, as per your "Waxing, detailing & protecting" video? Does the waxoil & TT process replace the waxing process during the winter months, or do you still use them in conjunction somehow?
Also, is there any there "special treatment" you'd recommend giving a new bike when you first get it, other than your advice about treating the underside & "under-seat" areas of the rear mudguard with waxoil, as you mentioned?

Hi Jorge just carry on waxing the paintwork that has not been treated with waxoil. on a new bike just build up the coats of wax 2 or 3 coats should do it. congratulations on your new bike sir and thanks for watching!

Thanks Stuart. I've had similar problems to you with acf50 on my GS so am looking for an alternative to use on my new bike when it arrives. I have used fs365 which I prefer to acf50, but I might try the combination you discribe here instead. As you've found out if you make the wrong choice for your needs by the time you find out it's too late as the bike has by then started to corrode. How much do you ride in winter please so I can get an idea if your method would be suitable for me. Cheers Ade
adrianbarrie13 hi adrian. As you can see from the video i only carry out a partial treatment of the bike with the wax oil as i am selective about when i take the bike out over winter. A full treatment of wax oil will withstand pretty much any thing and one treatment will last all winter without having to reapply.
Hi Stuart and thank you for another timely reminder about winter prep. I'll be looking out for the products you suggest but just one question : your version of the wax and oil product comes from Car Plan, but the one I've used on my cars is WaxOyl, do you know if there is much difference as I have plenty of WaxOyl left in stock with the accompanying spray system ?

Hey Stuart. Sorry if I've missed it but I don't think you mention anywhere in the video how you go about winterising your rear suspension forks. I know from past experience those are particularly vulnerable to corrosion so I'd love to know your take on keeping them rust free.
Hi Jorge i don't bother with my shocks as they are Hagon Nitros which means they are made from stainless steel! for other shocks just use whatever maintenance spray you use on the engine!
stuart fillingham Thanks for the quick reply! That will be Double TT then, as recommended by one Stuart Fillingham in his motorbike winterising video. I may have to look into some stainless steel shocks eventually as the stock ones were real magnets for rust in my old T100, and I think they are much the same in my new T120.

Love the vids, Stuart. I'm across the pond from you. For the first time in my 7 years of owning motorcycles, I have to keep my Moto Guzzi outside during the winter here in New Hampshire. I looked for Muc-Off and TetroSeal, but it appears they're not in the US yet (Muc-Off rep told me there are plans to have the motorcycle cleaner over around the beginning of the year).
2 questions -
1) Are you aware/do you have alternative product recommendations for the CarPlan Wax/Oil and Muc-Off Motorcycle degreaser?
2) Are TetroSyl and TetroSeal the same company?
Planes do spend a lot of time on the decks of aircraft carriers getting battered by salt sea water/wind however.
Apparently they don't! they are kept below decks as much as possible when not operational, I looked in to it. Also they are cleaned and and serviced far more often than an average motorcycle.

However there’s one part not covered in your wire wheel maintenance program and I’d be interested in your views.
I have an Indian Scout with chrome wire wheels and the polishing of the hubs drives me nuts. The chrome is showing signs of discolouration and I don’t seems to be handle to get right in there to overcome this.
What’s your solution?

I'm curious about your rear stand/kickstand(?). Do you still have the original kickstand with the bike? Do you like that rear stand? Was the installation difficult? I'm looking at rear stands for my T100, but I like the idea of something like your rear stand/kickstand.
I love it Steve but the T120 comes with it as standard. very useful for many maintenance tasks.

Thank you very much for this vid, just got a second hand T120 and treated the underside of rear mudguard and chain guard with waxoil and the rest of the bike with TT spray. Just wondering about how to protect the wheel spokes which look like they will corrode without some protection of some sort?

So if I understand you correct, Double TT in vinter and GT85 in summertime , but I can still wash it afterwards using your metode, do I have to Apply , Double TT and GT85 after every wash. Getting my Triumph Bobber next week 😊

Hi Stuart, I'm treading a similar path to you in a way as I've just replaced by GS with and had the same issues with ACF50 that you did so I'm looking for an alternative to try and keep my new bike the way I want it. Firstly I notice you recommend GT85 in one of you videos but Double TT for winter. Is there a reason you don't use double TT all year round. Finally since the ACF50 experience I've used FS365 with great success but obviously that wouldn't be able to rectify the corrosion already there due to the ACF50 experience so I was wondering if you've had any experience using FS365 and if so how it compares with the waxoil/GT85 AND Double TT. some other vloggers have suggested the likes of WD40 and similar products are not a good idea for bikes as they can penetrate and dissolve the grease in bearings etc. so I would also be interested to hear what you think about that as far as Double TT and GT85 are concerned. Hi Adrian, welcome to the channel! I'm afraid I have no experience of FS365. but I can tell you with absolute certainty that nothing will beat wax/oil for long term corrosion protection on bare or painted metal! Most maintenance sprays contain a solvent that will disperse grease, however the anecdotal reports often banded about are the result of sales hype rather than anything else. A little common sense is required ie, do not spray it directly into bearings! and for such areas I would recommend applying it with a cloth soaked in the substance and the danger is completely avoided. GT85 can be obtained very cheaply if you shop around, Double TT is a little more expensive. I advocate GT85 in summer as it is all that is strictly needed and Double TT in winter as it does offer substantially better protection. there is nothing to stop you using Double TT all year round, I simply made the suggestion on money saving grounds.
Thanks so much for replying so quickly. I bought some Waxoil and Double TT while waiting for my new bike to arrive after watching this video so I'll give it a coating as per your recommendations. Thanks also for clarifying why you use GT85 in summer. I've found 600ml tins of Double TT on ebay for £5.85 which seems comparable with GT85 cost wise so as you say that's better I'll try that all year round. Thanks again Ade
no problem mate use the TT at least weekly if riding in winter. if it gets a good dousing of salt, rinse it off with cold water and re apply the Double TT!
Thanks, I normally wash my bike if I've been out on it in the winter - cold water wash first then a dose of ph neutral tfr followed by another rinse then the normal 2 bucket method, a final rinse followed by drying with a pet dryer so I'll reapply it after that.

Hey uncle Stu, i can't find any wax oil/double TT tetroseal products in India! Neither can i get my hands on acf 50/xcp. Can i spray WD40 instead?
I found a small area of rust on my new bike on the frame. What do I do? Do I sand it apply a primer than touch up paint, than clear coat. Or just put on the touch up paint?
Hi Walt. thats a difficult one to answer without seeing it in person, painting over rust is never a good idea, it will hide, it but usually just creates a bigger problem to sort out later on. which bike is it? and where is the rust exactly?
Stuart are any of these products safe to us on the painted tank or is their something else for that.
i would reccommend autobrite direct hard coat spray fo gloss paint and brite work.

Hi Stewart, do you have an opinion on Scottoiler FS365 as an anti corrosion protector?
Hi Colin, I have no experience of the product to be honest although I have done a little research on it. My main concern if my memory serves me correctly, is that it uses water as a solvent base. This being the case I don't see how it can provide adequate corrosion protection as its wash off resistance will be very low. That being said they may have some sort of chemical voodoo going on that invalidates my opinion, but if they do I am not aware of it!
Should I do it to the main body work like fueltank etc?
If Your riding all through the winter sir, it certainly wont do any harm!

there are alternatives available but nothing that beats this for performance and protection!

Any similar products to double TT and tetroseal waxoil I can get in Belgium? Because the only way I can get my hands on them is via eBay and it costs me 25£ for 500ml wax oil and 20£ for 600ml double TT, thanks in advance

Can I use this wax oil on my Barbour jacket? Seems like an easy spray job in the fall for the old English jacket.

So if you are using your bike during the winter, you would apply the Waxoil once or twice over the winter, and then use Double TT about once a week ?
Does Muc-off take the waxoil off ?

Similar to you Stuart, I take a lot of pride in my bikes, but here in Aus we're quite fortunate with our weather - I'm accustomed to coating my bikes in inox mx3 after a wash but it doesn't really set and the more I look into doing multi-day trips, no matter the weather on my 1200XE, the more I'm looking for a film coating that is dry, non stick and doesn't ruin the appearance of a new bike - will be trying to hunt this stuff down - appreciate the video :)
In summer when I come to wipe off the wax oil off my paint work with white spirit does it need to be diluted as I’m wary of it bringing off my paint work?? Thanks
white spirit will not damage your paintwork!
