    I love listening to your videos..
    You might look for a quote from John Muir for your sampler. He was so influential in CA with Yosemite and the redwoods and a quote from him would fit right in with your travel theme.
    "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir
    "Keep close to nature's heart ... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean."
    "Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul."

    The redwoods areas in California are associated with John Muir, so I'd suggest one of his quotes. Maybe "And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul."

    Hi Jeanne, How about John Muir, an East Bay advocate of Nature in general, Yosemite and the Redwoods in praticular. A couple of his favorite quotes to me are: 1. “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” ― John Muir, 2.“In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

    Thank you for another informative session today. I, like you was very resistant to use my Kindle. My first one was given to me as a gift but have learned to love it. I have a group of ladies that I join once a week, some do cross stitch, some do crochet. One of the younger ladies was stitching from a chart on her phone. It was the first time I had ever seen such a thing. I cannot see me converting to this way but I do see it as the future for the younger stitcher so as I designer, it is good to keep up with the changes. I have to say, I never thought I would like to download a chart but have done so from your site a few times and now I am not adversed to ordering this way. Thank you for offering Secrets of the Sea at such a great price. I am currently working on it and am loving it. I was concerned about keeping the backstitching of the quote straight but it is coming out very nice. Please know, I appreciate your generosity of time and love of the craft.

    Kathy Gelb makes a good point on the hand dyed linen fabrics. I have heard many floss-tubers, or IG users, mention washing hand dyed linens and it not going well. I think people hear this and think then they can’t wash ANY linen or ANY floss. Anymore, almost all of my linen purchases are hand dyed and I’m a “bit” anxious about washing those? 🤷🏻‍♀️. Again, thanks for a lovely video and sharing your knowledge about stitching. I always learn something ….. 🤗

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  3 роки тому

      I'll talk about this more next week but basically, for me, it comes down to this: if the fabric is not washable because it's not colorfast or if I cannot treat it in a way to make it colorfast, I'm not going to stitch on it. There are so many great choices out there that are washable ... that's what I will use.

The nook tablet has the nook app, my library’s apps as well as the Kindle app. (The nook app is not available on the Kindle.) And I have all these apps plus Apple books on my iPad mini! These serve as backup to my print books especially when traveling. Your discussion of washing over-dyed threads and linen was interesting and I look forward to hearing more about it. Hello Jean - I don't wash my work despite working in hand. Those that work on mottled/over-dyed linens would hardly notice any marks made during stitching. If our projects were just linen fine but they have floss or silk stitched on them. I wet my linen for ironing (according to your guidelines) when I'm getting ready to frame. We all know that a new piece of clothing never looks the same after that first wash and I just don't think it's normally necessary. I have pillowcases which are 100% linen and agree linen washes well and it gets softer over time but so does handling our linen ground cloth. I should say, I only stitch on Raw Zweigart or a straw colour - never cream or white so perhaps that's part why I don't feel the need to wash.

    I do have Pattern Keeper and I am starting to use it. However it is on my phone and the screen is so small it doesn't work as well as if it were on a tablet. I like to read on my Kindle, but if I am looking at a craft book, magazine, cook book, etc... I prefer a regular old fashioned paper book. I have recently used Adobe to mark off my stitches on my laptop and that worked great. And it was FREE! There is an app called Silk that is for Apple products. However, as a consumer you cannot download patterns you purchase onto it. Instead you need to purchase the pattern from the makers of Silk. So, as a designer, I guess you would have to somehow sell your pattern to them to make your patterns available to purchase from Silk. I'm not even sure if that makes any sense how I wrote it. LOL Looking forward to next weeks video.

    One caveat on washing linen used for cross stitch. If the linen is hand dyed, make sure the dye used is colorfast before you wash, or steam.

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  3 роки тому

      This is where I will respectfully disagree ... to be certain that the fabric I stitch on IS colorfast, I would absolutely wash it before stitching. I am simply not going to stitch on a fabric that cannot be washed.

    Regarding the washing of linen. On a recent Country Stitchers floss tube Deb showed a piece of linen that she had “spot washed “. Apparently a rather large bug had relieved itself on her stitching while it stood unattended in her floor stand. When she tried to remove the poopy with a damp cloth it also removed the dye from the linen and left a very unsightly white spot on her tan linen! This may be the source of some of the “do not wash linen “ conversations in our community at present.

    Jean, perhaps the reason some say that linen can’t be washed is because of over-dyed linen fabrics, which probably run into the same issues as you mentioned with over-dyed threads?
    Also, in case you haven’t researched it yet: the Silk app is strictly Apple-based for now. It has many similarities to Pattern Keeper, with (in my opinion) one or two small pluses and several minuses. App is free but only works with patterns bought through the app , which to me is a big minus! (To me it was worth buying an Android tablet whose sole use would be for PK - I now wish I’d bought the next size up, like my iPad).
    YMMV🙂

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  3 роки тому

      It's certainly possible that the statement was made about a printed or overdyed process but I have encountered a similar statement myself that blatantly and falsely said, "linen cannot be washed" so who knows? These days there are linens that perhaps shouldn’t be washed...overdyed linens...I have heard that the dyes may come out/bleed if washed...like overdyed floss. I am a long time stitcher who has just been introduced to overdyed linen so haven’t given a test to washing overdyed linen...yet...still in midst of stitching sampler on overdyed linen...not sure I want to take risk of losing overdyed effect and/or ruining all the work I have put into stitching this!
    About mordants...learned recently that cream of tartar is a mordant...Perhaps reason cream of tartar is used in homemade play dough? Thinking about trying cream of tartar on overdyed floss...what do you think?!?

    • @JeanFarishNeedleworks
      @JeanFarishNeedleworks  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, cream of tartar is a mordant but mordants are used during the dye process, not in an after-dye process. On the topic of over-dyed linens that cannot be washed ... I'll wait and address this in the next episode. But I will say this: people who make statements about linen not being washable are being irresponsible when they do not make it clear that they are labeling an over-dyed or after-market-processed linen as not being washable ... it's the PROCESS, not the fabric that is not washable.

    I’m really looking forward to your pointers on washing over dyed floss and fabrics. I’m branching out and trying silks. I bought some Dinky Dyes silks that are a dream to stitch but then it bled quite badly when I washed it. Luckily, it was a small so it wasn’t a major calamity but definitely disappointing.
    I’d love it if you talked about buying patterns on Etsy. I’ve noticed yours coming up in other folk’s shops and am wondering if you get a commission from them or are they essentially pirating your work. When I first started looking for your patterns on Etsy, your shop wasn’t the first hit when I searched your name and I had to dig around for it. I’ve since been hesitant to buy patterns unless it’s in the actual designers shop but I wonder if there is a difference. Some clarification from an actual designer would be helpful. Thanks!

    “ It is the lion, not the deer, that hides in the grass!” -Vincent Raj Kapoor
    The following are from Holy Writings.
    Psalm 18:33 “He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me stand on high places.”
    Psalm 42:1 “As a deer that longs for streams of water, So I long for you, O God.”
