Why can't the alternator re-charge the battery?
There isn’t an alternator in the GTE.
@@BOTBreviews ahh right cool. Cheers
Hey, love your video. Can you make a video about things you don’t like?
I managed to order a GTE in December 2017 and received it in June 2018. It's a fantastic car! I was doing a 200 mile motorway trip twice a week and getting 60mpg, I'd use Hybrid till the electric run out, then into GTE mode so the battery would regen harder, which usually worked well enough so I could run all electric for the final 10 miles. Best thing about it was that VW paid me 5k for my old diesel, I'd only paid £4.8k for it 10 years before, so basically I drove a Seat Leon FR for 10 years and got paid £200 for it. Best Deal ever! Seriously though, the car is GENIUS.
Hi, now I'm looking to get one 2018 GTE in Ireland with 120k km. Do you still think that is a great car and what do you think about it in 2024?:)
I charge at home and at work every day. Im sitting with an average of 168mpg.
Martin Allen that’s nice mpg.. have u got any figures on how much the electric cost is to charge it every night
@@kennywood2542 It's lots cheaper than petrol per mile - 8kw at, say, domestic rate of £0.16 per kWh means £1.28 per charge.
Salah the Diver Are you ok with recharging your electric toothbrush? Or does that make you ‘not a real man’, too?
Asking for a gay friend.
hes talking bullshit, this car uses way more then you think. you should be happy with 45 mpg and even that is good
I get 0 mpg.
Had my GTE ADVANCE a year now and can’t Fault it. Had many golfs since there introduction in 74 and this is the best I’ve owned. On the savings side it’s cost me £60 in the year to charge it and I’ve saved £750 in the year on buying fuel 👍
I have a GTE and you really need to charge it to get the best out of it. I charge at home and at work and it Pretty always in triple figures for the MPG for my commute.
GTE mode is fun and the car does feel very quick I must admit!
If you do a lot of short journeys (less than 50 miles) and can charge the car it will save you loads. I’ve had mine 6 months and done almost 10k, and I probably do two full tanks a month (roughly £85 total).
Either way great vid, very underrated car, just a shame you can’t buy them anymore!
Likewise, have a GTE and home charge it all the time. I do lots of short trips, so lots of electric driving. Most people miss the point that, per mile, electricity is sooo much cheaper than petrol/diesel - and some of mine is effectively free as it comes off my home's solar PVs. Current long term MPG on the car reading average 87, I am doing around 850 miles a month, so some months I don't visit a filling station at all.
This is great! I’d love to be able to run mine like that. Unfortunately live in a block of flats so can’t get a charge point in. There is however some charging at some shops I use and it’s free so top up when I go there. Do you schedule the charge for overnight for cheaper electric Chris?
In The Headlights personally I just plug it in when a home as I’m on a flat rate tariff. It’s charged up overnight but sometimes in the day either at the office or at home.
No, don't have Economy 7 (cheaper overnight electric). Two reasons - first, Economy 7 means cheap rate overnight, but a marginally higher day rate, so only worth having if you use lots of nighttime elec, for example for home heating. I will probably swap to Economy 7 when I get a full EV. Second reason, because of the solar PVs, I try to charge if I am home during daylight, when my roof is producing electricity - if I don't use it, it goes into the grid. @@BOTBreviews
Well of course you have to charge it...duhhhhhhhh. It's electric.
Bought mine a month ago , its an
ex company car, previously used on motorways with 96000 miles , its a 1.4 Advance model.
So far gives upto 20 miles per charge but it is used in town and school trips only
I still have the petrol tank full since i topped it up next day after purchase!
No road tax and high savings with nice drive!
Highly recommended
I’ve had two of these and have a pearl black one at the moment I love it. Glad to hear a really positive review for a change.
My dad ordered a GTE as a company car summer last year, still haven't heard from 'em 😑
@The Legend of Texas because its superior to the ancient fuel burner cars?
@The Legend of Texas all about personal preference. Not everyone needs a huge range
@The Legend of Texas most people dont need more than 100km a day (about 60miles),
And its a hybrid if he needs to go to texas for some reason, so he has a petrol engine aside from the motor
Oh, he just forgot to tell you that he don`t work there no more...
If you don’t plug this car in then it’s kind of pointless buying one.
True, but most of the people with a GTE have a lease so they don't pay the petrol. Always empty battery.
And some people just buy this to have the fast acceleration without having a big 2.0T but a nice small 1.4T
I also don't have a charging station at home. Fortunately, there is a charge station at work which I always utilize to charge my 18 Reg GTE for free. I was one of the lucky ones to get my car before new GTE orders were stopped. I exclusively use E-Mode on my daily work commute, a 16.8 mile round trip. Even if I make detours to do a bit of grocery shopping or to visit friends on my way home after work, I still have enough charge left the next morning to get me back to work for another free recharge. On Friday afternoon before I leave work for the weekend, I top up the car and that charge lasts me all weekend until Monday morning when I go in to work and recharge it again. I'm so used to going for weeks without spending a penny to recharge the car or even for fuel. I do lose a bit of money on long journeys though, where I have to recharge and refuel on public stations. But since such journeys are far between, the GTE is the perfect car for me. Electric mode for work, and petrol-electric for long journeys. I'm hesitating making the leap into a full blown BEV because of the occasional long journey that I embark on. In spite of what EV enthusiasts say, range anxiety is a real thing for me. I will be going full electric in the near future though, once this raft of new long range EVs come to the market in 2019 - 2020. I love the VW ID hatch and will probably get one when it's finally released. I also would consider the Kia e-Niro and the Nissan Leaf E+. For now though, it has to be the Golf GTE. I love this car.
Thanks for the comment 😊 glad you enjoyed the video!
I love my GTE, hardly ever use petrol.
I have one for a company car, good for benefit in kind. I am a petrol head as well and own a 2015 nissan GTR, I achieve the same MPG when driving sensible. 40MPG ish in both cars 🤷♂️ and I fully charge the GTE before every journey.
Hybrids aren’t there yet, neither are electric only vehicles.
The only way forward I think is hydrogen power, as you can just fill up and go 👍
"just like a tesla" Nothing happens for like 3 sec... Slowly start creeping " U SEE ITS FAST" hahaha
Had my GTE Advance since May 2018, had many golfs of every type since there introduction in 74, love this one, and wonder what I’ll get in maybe a years time? Shame diesels have a bad name as the GTD I owned before the GTE was my all time favourite and I’d go back to one no problem.
Have a passat gte saloon and it’s great. Only thing annoying is when you’re in GTE mode and B mode at the same time it can sometimes feel a little spastic when slowing down and then accelarating again before you stop
The electric batteries will only charge when you brake or release the throttle, it wont charge when you accelerate because you would lose power. In that way you have a more efficient way of charging and it wont effect your mpg
(Sorry if i wrote somthing wrong, im dutch XD)
Hi Sven 😊 yep totally agree and mentioned that in the video but if you’re driving at a steady speed on the motorway it does show that’s it’s charging the battery (very very slowly).
@@BOTBreviews oohw okey i did not know that, i work with vw golfs and the golf gte but did not know that😂
@@BOTBreviews I have a GTE (since 2015): Mine will charge when you're in hybrid-mode, B-mode & release the throttle. In D-mode, it won't unless you're braking. Additionally, in GTE mode, it will ALSO charge the car if it's low, even when in D mode.
I've had one for almost a year - I love it!
I have a '18 GTI Performance. I get why you got it due to business expenses but in-terms of mpg I can get ~35 mpg easily. If I drive economically, 40+ is achievable.
Same here,I get 35mpg on my 18 GTI SE,so for me is not worth it if i don't get 50mpg on any electric car.

You cant buy the GTI Clubsport (as seen on my channel) either dude! As it was only in production for 6 months or so for collectible reasons. *Edit* Well of course you can from a dealer IF he happens to have one. But not order it straight from factory & spec it to your hearths desire like i did though.
The clubsport stilllll the best gti there is hands down
I've had a GTE Advanced now for 6 months, it's a lovely car to drive however, if you're not living in a city and buying one to save money on fuel you most likely wont unless you can charge for free. I charge mine 5 days a week and it's added an extra £60 a month to the electricity bill. Also expect to get about 15-20 miles doing normal driving in electric only mode, depending on if you are using the heating or not.
Ollie I have got a GTE Advance and also charge it 5 days a week. The cost for month is no more than £19, this has been worked out from my digital metre several times.
@@simestone How are you managing that? The standard wall charger uses 3.7 Kilowatts and it takes about 4 hours to charge. Based on the UK average KWh that's around £2.60 per charge.
@@ollie8329 it won't consistently pull 3.7 kilowatts. it also depends on how much u charge everyday, and maybe the kind of charger you have.
@@ollie8329 I have a podpoint wall-charger that logs the energy use, from zero it will pull in 7kwh. My electricity is 13.1p. fro pure planet, so thats 92p. Your car definitely shouldn't take 4 hours to charge from a proper type 2 wall point, are you sure you haven't set a charge current limit in the car, you want to choose MAX.
If by standard charger you mean the 3-pin plug in one that charges at 10A, though possibly even slower if you’ve got a poor socket which heats the plug. With that you will see about 4 hours, with a total draw of a bit over 7kwh. How much energy goes in does vary a bit charge to charge as the BMS is doing trickery behind the scenes to try and get decent life out of the battery, for example if you run it flat it will sneak power back into the battery over time without really showing this.
Just done a job and the customer has one of these. Said he'd get 160 mpg on a gallon. Also said he had it tweeked by the same team that services AMGs....says it now does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds WTF !!?
OMG. You are EXACTLY the kind of person that gives PHEVs a bad name. If you don't want to plug in your car THEN DON'T BUY A CAR WITH A PLUG! Or at least have the decency to not be so proud of emitting tonnes of CO2 and polluting the air but still cashing in on the tax benefits! I drive a GTE; it's much more pleasant on electric power. Pleeeease do yourself and everyone else a favour and lobby your employer for some charging infrastructure, and make an effort to install a charger at home too! Or request that your council or power company install one in your neighbourhood.
Wow Dave.... I didn’t think I’d have this impact on you. I’m so sorry. If you watched the whole thing you’ll have seen that I do WANT to plug my car in, and when I can, I do. They are installing power points outside my flat and hoping to charge it there soon. I bought it because I knew the infrastructure is being worked in all the time. - Christian.
The Passat Estate GTE looks 100 times better than the Golf Estates. The Golf estate just looks wrong. It looks too stretched.
Get lost
The reson for the order stop is not a to large order stock! The problem is that it has not been approved for the WLPT consumption cycles. WLTP is mandatory from 31/08/2018. Many other model (drive trains) from VAG has the same problem and has also sales stop!
What is the name of this colour of the GTE. It's beautiful
Hi, what is the long term reliability of the GTE? I have heard that once the warranty expires it is very expensive to repair.
I own Passat GTE summer city run 30 miles per charge easy, winter about 25 can't wait full electric version or ID range
Oh mixed fuel consumption 100+mpg quite easy free tax is cars reg. before april 2017
If there is engine sound coming from some speakers it's probably NOT in the engine bay..
Hybrid car's are AWESOME!!!! :D
I've got the Audi A3 e-tron (which is the same car basically) and it's brilliant! I wonder what the differences are...
Lovely car, but I don't like the fake engine sound in the speaker's.
That's not right.... Lol
Totally understand but it doesn’t bother me at all. It adds to the enjoyment of driving it to be honest. I should have really said in the video:
“The sound generator is actually fixed to the base of the windscreen/bulkhead area, and it vibrates under direction from the ECU to provide some more bass engine noise in line with that generated by the 1.4 TSI engine itself. It’s a physical sound generator, not just an mp3 file played through the cars speakers.”
5:36 - that CT200H sneaking into a hybrid review.
Avoid these like the plague. I bought a 2016 second hand with full service history. After a year I'm having no end of problems.
Like the colour hate the music bits, how reliable is virtual dash/turbo? Boot space compromised much? All this puts me off buying one though I do appreciate if self charging
Awesome video Christian, I always wanted a GTI but we've got electric charging points at work so it would make a lot of sense for me to get a GTE instead now! That was fast 30 years ago, maybe.
All that technology and modes and unless you charge it every night, you'll get 40mpg... not much more than a regular gti which is faster, more fun, and cheaper. The benefits of owning an electric car for the consumer are great but in reality are they really making that much of a difference?
Hi Chris 😊 For a business purchase for me... yes a huge difference. £11.50 a day for congestion charge, less than half the price for a parking permit, road tax, insurance, all adds up for me - Christian.
In The Headlights oh yeah the financial incentives are massive. It's a clever car by Volkswagen, and they'll sell an absolute ton. But what the government can't control is whether people actually plug these in or not, and if people don't (or can't), it won't be any better for the environment than a normal petrol car.
Great review btw! I learned a lot

The drivetrain ist from 2014. Thats my main problem, it needs the 1.5 liter with modern batteries and i would buy it. But i dont want the old 1.4 Liter Problems and poor electric range. I will wait for the upgrade and then maybe its an option. The hybrid engine with a diesel would be nice. Low consumption and high range.

I had the Passat GTE and it was an absolute shoddily built piece of trash. Handed it back after 10 weeks. VW and dealership were both tossers and after 19 years and ownership of 12 VAG cars I’ll never be buying one of their cars again. I do also wonder whether their order books are really closed because they can’t make enough as I see so few of these on the road i suspect they’re running down production.

Given that VW are about to reveal the Mk8 Golf in Geneva in March it’s unlikely they’re going to put the GTE back into production. Well that’s my view anyway - Tim
This model was descontinued due to increase in CO2 with WLTP cycle, similar to Mercedes Plug-In models
Not in Denmark..
Do you know how to retro fit those LED Fog lights?
Good day thanks for the video. Here in South Africa they not even thinking of bringing it in to South Africa. I would like one because about twice a year i do a 500+- miles journey and it would be great. The savings after a while though will be.
actually for a 500 miles trip the GTE would be far worse than GTD with 2.0 diesel, because the hybrid powertrain can't recuperate the charge if you don't break or stop at all, diesel uses much less fuel on steady load (like on a highway), and GTE weighs about 130kg more than GTD
I really appreciate your video , thank you. It’s so frustrating that the tax rules and parking benefits have pushed you to pick this car and I would have too if I was a company car driver . Without the charging at home the net effect to your environment would have probably been better in a diesel Golf than an E Golf. I really hope the government can do more to start encouraging the introduction of charging points so we can get more benefit from these types of cars !
Completely agree. I hear they are putting in charging points on my road ‘this year’ so that will be amazing!
In The Headlights that is great :)
If you can keep the Golf GTE charged, then the car will cost you next to nothing to run. I charged it at home, work and at our shopping outlet. On long runs I found it best to fully charge the battery and drive it in GTE mode. I got 44mpg from Derby to London by doing this. 42mpg in the standard Hybrid mode. Brilliant car.
Why is that so great. I got 42mpg out of my Audi s3 driving sensibly

Couple of things that don't make any sense... Why would you want a golf estate gte when you have a passat gte estate? Which does look good...and secondly, why on earth would you pay all that money for the car and not install a charging point at home or work? It would save extra on running costs and actually make having a hybrid worthwhile.
Hi Craig. As I addressed in the video, I don’t think the Passat looks as good as the golf. In London unless you have a charge point installed at your home (which I can’t due to living in a flat) then it’s actually more expensive to sign up to an electric charge point than it is to run on fuel. I charge when I get to free points and the BIK I get as this being my company car more than out ways the fact I can’t charge it every day.
The front seats on my golf mk4 are more confortable than the golf mk7(Gti,Gtd witch i had,Gte,R).They have more spunge. The suspention with 18"alloys is destroying your liver😁

How much electricity can be generated with the regeneration braking
36 standard electricity units, I mean if you start at the top of the alps and work your way down, its going to charge the battery up a lot!
The battery warranty is worthless. Vw can’t get new batteries to fix it if it breaks
Presumably you get a new car instead then, or a full refund?
I was hoping you would talk about the infotainment system.
Hmm good choice for you as your unable to charge...but a full electric car is the way to go hybrid cars kid on cars with very little range on electric plus high running costs as you have two forms of propulsion.
I bought the car as it was a sensible business car. Others would have cost me a lot more in BIK. When they install charge points outside my flat (which they are doing this year) then I can charge it every night. I couldn’t run a fully electric car at the moment.

This is a nice car, but the seats are not so comfy on long trips.
Is it reliable after 3 years of use?
Avoid these. I bought a 2016 second hand with full service history. After a year I'm having no end of problems.
I was wondering why you didn’t buy the e-golf instead, until you said you didn’t charge it... why dont just buy an Auris instead? I find these 2kwh battery pack hybrids just a joke..
if you have an plug USE IT!
And in Norway at least the e-golf fully loaded is much cheaper than a basic golf. The GTE isn’t that popular for a reason.. but only 2% of the golf sales last year had only ICE. And that «high» number is probably purely because the SW doesn’t come as GTE.
R A An E-Golf is considerably more expensive in the UK/the rest of Europe.
If we here in Norway didn’t have the tax payoff we would barely see an E-Golf here.
Also, the GTE is not limited by range as an E-Golf is.
I support his decision by getting a GTE, I’d do the same.
The whole point of a car is to be free and not limited. And that’s exactly what you get with a GTE, not an E-Golf that struggle to get 100 km range in winter...
It wallows like a cross-channel ferry. Ive rectivied that with Koni Active Sport shocks and Eibach springs. If you polybush the the control arms it increases the turn in and feel MASSIVELY.
Hope you told your insurance.
ayyyyyy shoutout inverness!
😂😎👍🏻
Does it run purely on electric??
Watch the video and listen with your ears.
lol, my Citroen c2 vts gets an average mpg of 26 🤣
Song?
I had one of these in Norway , great car and can be fully recharged driving down some very hilly areas. However as per other the mileage I do means I drive a VW twin turbo diesel and still top 50 mpg cruising and never get less than 40mpg.
@In The Headlights Oh yes, don't worry - I'm VERY aware of BOTB (watch every Surprise video) and I buy 10-20 tickets for a Golf R every week Hahaha. Hope to meet you on my front doorstep next Tuesday, preferably with a Golf R round the corner :) - Max
20 a week. That must be 40 a week or approx 160a month. You do know that the golf r was only 180 a month to lease not long ago with a deposit on top
@@royalstevep68 That's some great maths right there.
Friends of mine order one September 2017 and they took delivery of there’s in July 2018,
Bit of a wait but I’m glad they finally got it! 😊
you dont have a charging pod at your flat? what sense does it make then to own that car???
Did you watch the video?! 🙄 I explained why I bought it.
@@BOTBreviews yes i did but hear me out. My parents also own a gte and the biggest advantage with the car really is,that they ( my dad) can drive on electric power only during the week when he has to go to work and therefore technically never has to use a single drop of gasoline .
If , like in your case, you just drive it like any other gas powered car, youre really just completely missing out on one of the biggest financial benefits of this car ! I think its also one of the things you come to realise once you actually live it yourself. Maybe you should consider installing a "waalbox" at your flat if its even possible.
i get it, owning the car on its own already is a financial benefit to you, but dont sleep on the biggest one od them all !! best regards
Hi 😊
Oh trust me, if I could charge it I would. Weirdly the closest charge points to me actually work out more expensive to sign up to the service and charge than just to run the car on fuel. 🤷🏼♂️ So as it stands it’s more cost-effective for me not to run it on electric unless I ether get a wall charger installed (not going to happen I don’t think with my building) or I find free charges.
