The one piece of wisdom that has helped me is the pre-shot routine, because the body will follow the mind, even if we are not aware of it.
Love this! Playing with a consistent routine is huge 👍👍
According to a teaching pro here in the Philippines, from handicap 5 to 0 is an inborn talent
That's not true - it comes from hard work, talent only gets you so far
I've decided I'm gonna try and go for scratch-level golf. Currently, I've played 5 rounds of 18 and I'm roughly a ~38-40 hcp. I was playing No Driver, a TM Sim2 Ti 3w, MacGregor Oversize Battlesticks (3-P blades), a 56* ping wedge, and a Goated Golf putter, with no lessons because of a lack of instructors in my general area. Now that the season is over, I've updated my whole bag 😅. I've got an AI smoke TD Max driver, the same 3W, a full set (3-LW, cavity back) Avoda Origin Same Length iron, and a void armlock putter (Going between Goated and Void). What is the advice you'd give to someone like me?
My short game is solid. I practice my chipping/putting every couple of days for a few hours with some distance drills for chipping and X amount of putts made in a row a different increments.
I haven't been able to test out my driver yet to see what I can do with it yet.
👍👍 keep at it!
Simply comes down to if they put in enough hours in relation to their natural talents / happened to be doing something with similar mechanics to golf like being a pitcher in baseball. Starting younger gives a lot more time to rack up that experience and spaced repetition... but someone starting in their 30's that's focused and trains intentionally still has a decent chance. I like to use visualization as someone with a fulltime job; that allows me to get the most out of meetings at work. Visualization and practicing my thoracic turns / putts if I don't need to be on camera.
100% right, gotta put in the work. Great work 👍👍
Golf is hard. Every time I think I’m close to scratch I get served a healthy dose of humble pie. Giving up has never been an option though. Onward.
Couldn’t agree more! Gotta just keep going 👍👍 thanks for watching
Love the Rypstick
@@golfspeednz same, so good!
Not a bad video, but your missing one key point. I went from shooting low 80's to scratch in 2 months. Main reason why was my short game improvement, specifically my chipping. To get better at chipping I spent 30 minutes a day chipping around the practice greens. My favorite drill was to pick a chip and not move until I chipped in. If you hit the same chip shot 20 times in a row, it is going to do one or 2 things, bore you to death or narrow your focus. For me it narrowed my focus. After a while I could tell if I hit a chip if it was going to be 1 foot short 2 inches right. After a month of practicing chip ins, my chips went from 10-15 feet away (which I considered a decent chip) to 3-5 feet away. 5 feet was the bad chips and you make a lot more 5 footers than 10 footers.
Short game is key, good drill! Keep it up
Unless your short game is laughably bad, investing in tee to green will yield better results for lowering handicap provided it doesn't add to penalty strokes. Again, unless your putting or short game is laughably bad i.e. 3 putts and duffing chips
Do you chip with one club like a lob or sand or do you switch it up based on the shot
@@FluentSZN I try to always chip with the same club. It used to be a 60 degree wedge but I have since gone to my 52. Just pick on and get good with it.
Do you do mental coaching virtually? I’d be interested if you ever did
Thanks for reaching out - yes I do offer mental golf coaching. Shoot me an email - michael@wickedsmartgolf.com & share more about your game. Look forward to hearing from ya!
I'm buying the new Titleist driver when it drops. That should make me a scratch golfer
Normal or mini driver?
Literally do all of that. Barely breaking 80. For me it’s penalties.
Good work, all about consistency! For penalties is it the same miss? Is your driver fit for you? Speed train at all?
Most of us just suck and will always suck just enjoy your limits.
Pretty awful attitude to go through life with 🤷🏻♂️
Well I don't hit the ball long enough, period!!!!!!! I'v tried, nothing works, so there.
All I can say is practice your short game. Not all of us can hit the long ball.
In my younger years, I got down to a 8 handicap, good enough for me. And I did shoot 2 18 hole rounds under par (69 and a 70). But I still was not a long ball hitter. I am now 75 years old and still have a good short game, but struggle to shoot pars on allot of long holes. So I just play for exercise and don't worry about score.
.End of story.
Gotta respectfully disagree. I’ve seen a guy in his mid 50s add 25 yards with a driver fitting, Tour Tempo, & speed training. Add in some flexibility & workouts anything is possible but it all starts in the mind - gotta believe it can happen
@@wickedsmartgolf75 is not 50, though… he’s more likely to improve his short than his long game.
Realistically only .5-1% of golfers are scratch
This is from the USGA?
@@wickedsmartgolf id say more serious better golfers keep a handicap. Majority of golfers i know have never put in an official handicap and take mulligans. Could say there are good players that dont input but are they good? Then when players have put in a handicap and get worse, they wont put in a new handicap. Many factors, tough to figure out. I'm in the .5 to 1% guess as well.
98% of golfers don’t have the athletic ability to play scratch golf even if they lived and breathed it every day.
Pessimistic much?
Sounds like advice from a young person….50 swings as hard as I can will lead to 50 days recovery of from injury
lol closing in on 40 so I guess middle age
i think its less than 2%. ive never played with anyone that even comes close to scratch.
Rewarding when it happens 👍
Only 2% are scratch golfers but every comment section on every golf video out there is loaded with people claiming they are scratch. 😂
A lot of liars out there.
You're not wrong lol put them in a tournament playing by the rules of golf too!
@@wickedsmartgolf I love that idea.
I golfed with a random person a couple weeks ago that claimed he was scratch and I was thoroughly interested to hopefully get some tips since I am a high handicapper.
I watched him move his ball out of tough lies and not count a few drops and take gimme putts.
He ended up shooting 10 over par even with all the “cheating”.
@@jpdst29 important to remember, scratch golfers should average mid to high 70s - handicap isn't average score but potential to score.
@@wickedsmartgolf that is true. I always forget that part. Thanks!
@@jpdst29 Happy to help and thanks for watching. Not sure if you like podcasts but I have nearly 300 episodes with a lot of similar content - also titled Wicked Smart Golf.
Scratch is much lower than 2%
1.99% according to USGA website
@wickedsmartgolf Not everyone reports. Germany is the only location that requires a handicap to play at courses.
Their 2010 numbers were
54 to 37: 36 %,
36 to 26.5: 27.5 %,
26.4 to 18.5: 20.5 %,
18.4 to 11.5: 11.5 %,
11.4 to 4.5: 4 %,
under 4.4: .5 %;
I would estimate that about 10%-20% of golfers have a handicap.
@@jonasbrownlee7279 thanks for sharing, didn't know that!
Been playing for 57 years and still can't break 90. Driver is now 170 max.
That’s an impressive career though! Love of the game
damn lol!!
@GhostofEight hard game
But I bet you’ve had some great times on the links, right?
Well done. I would be shocked if more than 2% of golfers play for 57 years. The average score is 100 or 105. When you break 100, you are by definition a good golfer.
I'm just gonna say it. There is NO WAY 2 out of every 100 people that golf shoot par. I've been golfing for 30 years. I've seen one person break par. One. In 30 years.
2 out of every 100 who carry a handicap are scratch. But that doesn’t mean they break par or shoot par - handicaps are potential, not average score. Scratch golfers typically break 80 most of the time
Also that’s the people that carry a handicap. Most people don’t even get a handicap.
@@wickedsmartgolf its wild how many people don't understand how the handicap system works.
@@Mtnbike121 yeah most people think it's average score... and why so many people get upset they don't shoot their handicap most of the time (which you shouldn't).
@@wickedsmartgolf nor do they account for how difficult or how long a course is. A scratch golfer is/was supposed to shoot a 78-79 at the US Open Tee boxes.
If you have no natural abilities no matter how much you practice you won’t get any better it’s the same in all sports . Poor so called experts giving useless advice your wasting money just play to your abilities and enjoy it that’s the only secret you need to.
Gotta disagree here - I had very little talent but a lot of hard work got me to where I am. It wasn’t overnight or easy but it was worth it. Playing competitively was a big reason too
I’ve moved from about 30 to a 9.7 handicap in the four years since I started. Don’t listen to this guy
@@atreyuwings impressive, keep it up!
Hcp scores should not count from anywhere accept the tips. If your not golfing from the back porch , your not golfing your just out hitting a ball thinking you are better than you are. Go ahead have light fun rounds but scores from the whites or blues should not count towards your hcp
lol tips def make it challenging but everyone has to work their way back there. Gotta earn it - nothing worse than someone saying “I’m gonna get my moneys worth” and play the tips to shoot 100. Painful
Thats a lot of words to say that you don't know how the handicap system works. Lol
@@Mtnbike121 i know how the hcp works and its rubbish , no one cares if you shoot a 75 from 6000 yrd tees , you dont have to hit it over 200yrds to do it either , its not golf from the tranny tees. It should not go to your hcp , only scores from the tips should count to your hcp. If your not good enough to play from the tips then your not good enough to have a hcp , your not golfing your recreationally hitting a ball around course
@@wickedsmartgolf people shoot 100 from the forward tees , its even more painful to see or play with then someone who shoots 100 from the tips.
@@CanadianBiPolarBear lol the average scratch golfer is hitting it 259. Nobody is shooting 75 from 6000 yds on a 190 yd drive. Its a nice strawman argument though. Its always the most fragile egos that feel the need to spout the most retarded statements to gatekeep others from golf. Keep shooting 120 from the tips dude, enjoy that "real" handicap.
