  • Pitted glues to see which one is the best glue for styrofoam (pink or blue). Contenders were Loctite PL300 Foamboard Glue, Super 77 Spray Adhesive, Glidden Gripper, Foam Fusion, Gorilla Glue, Great Stuff and StyroGoo. They were tested with the surface scratched/ unscratched and at 24/48 hours. Watch to see the surprise winner. By the way - SimplyJenn is the member at HF that gave me the heads up on the surprise winner :)

      +Damian DeLapp You are so right. It's frustrating to find a video that just tells you straight up - what works. That's what forced me to make this video in the first place. Prior, there wasn't any help in finding a better glue and the project I made (Hellhound) became frustrating using the crappy glue (foamboard caulk) I had picked.

    I recently came across this video while researching foam adhesion. I needed something that would uniformly glue two pink EPS surfaces together for CNC machining. I can personally attest to the holding power of Glidden Gripper. My two pieces of foam did separate after just 24 hours.....but I pressed them back together and let them sit for an additional 2 days, and now I physically cannot separate them, the foam itself actually tears/shears off before the glue joint gives out (which it still hasn't after the extra 2 days of drying time) YAAAAAAAAY!!!! :)

      +Matthew Neesley That's awesome and yes - doesn't it surprise you how it tears itself apart - all from paint primer?! I was stunned myself - there had to be something I was missing. Too cheap, easy to get and easy to use.

      You are welcome and I hope it works great for you. Something to watch out for though. Pool noodles are a different type of foam than pink/blue foam and I didn't test that bond. Consider using Gorilla Glue for that.

    You did a great job with your video and your tests were spot on. On a side note, I build signs and use a lot of poly. I paint my white (wood) posts with Kilz 2 Latex Primer. I noticed when I stored the posts, even some that had returned from the field, if I let them have full length contact against each other, I would need a pry-bar to pull them apart.These were only leaning, not stacked. I was stunned at the force needed to separate them. I decided to try the Kilz on the poly. I painted both surfaces and put them together at various stages of drying and found that if I let it dry to the touch and put them together under pressure for a few hours, it was much the same as your Gripper test. Kilz is about $70.00 for a 5 gallon bucket. I just took a roller to put it on and under fair conditions, it would be 15-20 minutes until glue-up. I would love to see you do a video test on that. It works for my purpose but I don't have time or space for that kind of testing. Thank you. I love your video and I'm a new subscriber.

      I've been wondering if I let it tack up some if it would cure faster. Thank you so much for that insight. I haven't been making tombstones lately so not sure when I can get this tested out to be sure. But, with what I've done so far I can only think that would be an even better way of gluing poly together. Thank you and thanks for subscribing :)

      Scaryladyvideos .... P.S. I used to do something similar with Titebond III Waterproof wood glue. I would cut it, 50/50 with water, then spray it with one of the cheap Harbor Freight guns. Same method, let it dry to touch, then glue-up. It worked well but was a lot more work, especially including clean-up. Both work pretty well to use as a shell, too.

      I was looking at wood glue but thought that it would dry too hard and be tough to carve through. Thinning it is a great idea.

    I'm finding it's a delicate balance of how much Gripper to apply and whether to apply it to both sides or not. Still working that out. I'm leaning towards both sides. If you make the application too thin then there isn't enough to grip the other side. If you apply too much - takes forever to dry. I use a paint brush to apply it. I don't know how it would work for EPS foam - haven't tested it. Gripper itself is very light - think of it as paint.

  • @Scaryladyvideos
    @Scaryladyvideos  12 років тому

    Just tested it out. Carving with the SureForm Shaver (rasp) - not at all :) Also cut a chunk off with the Hot Knife and cut right through. It does leave a bit of a ridge that you can knock back down with the rasp. Guessing it's because of different boiling points. Looks to me like the Glidden 'cooks up' faster then the styro itself. Still - not a problem. Noticed the same result when using the Hot Wire knife on the foamboard glue. You just have to knock it back down.

    Totally agree. Each glue has a learning curve to make it perform juuust right. Lemme know how the Glidden Gripper works out for you. I've learned that the longer the drying time you give it (at LEAST 48 hrs) the better it sticks.

    I think so but not 100% sure. I used the Gripper on the faux wooden caskets (see that video) and the underside of them was unpainted Gripper and they looked great after the season but it wasn't used to glue anything - just a protective coat. All my tombstones have Drylok applied after the gluing.

    I took your winner, Glidden Gripper, and experimented with it a bit. I found that if you treat it like contact cement (apply thin layer to both surfaces and allow to tack up for ~5min, then bond) you can get a decent initial hold that will allow you to work on the piece while the "glue" continues to dry over 24hrs. At $10/qt this is some very cheap glue. Thanks so much for this well thought out and informative video. Hard to find these days.

      Scaryladyvideos For those that are willing to go 'online' for a solution, you must try 3M 78 Spray Adhesive. It beats even the Glidden Gripper. 3M 78 is made for gluing foam sheet. Spray on both surfaces, wait 1 minute, and bond. It has incredible strength the moment the two halves make contact. I have not found 78 anywhere locally. I would love to hear someone say otherwise.

    • @Scaryladyvideos

    Thank you! Thank you! I'm building some horse puppets (life size) for a show, and was really concerned about the cost and effectiveness of foam adhesives. I'm definitely going with Glidden Gripper. It reminded me of a director who taught us to make large foam drops by seaming together the 4'x8' panels with a strip of muslin brushed down with paint. When the paint dried, those drops hung from the rigging and never separated at the seams. He called it "dutching" but I've never seen a reference to it online.

    • @Scaryladyvideos
      @Scaryladyvideos  9 років тому

      Joan Verdegan i bet his technique worked wonderful. Am familiar with 'dutching' in regards to wood repair. That's a good tip to use if you don't have to carve into it. The key I've learned with my technique is allow more time to dry as the span of the square footage you are gluing increases.

  • @Scaryladyvideos
    @Scaryladyvideos  12 років тому +1

    Yeah, it's advertised as a paint primer. I couldn't believe it when a fellow haunter told me they used it as glue. To say I was skeptical was an understatement. In the time since I've heard that the Glidden reps show the Home Depot employees how you can also use it to glue two wood 2x4's together. Wow!

      Thank you so much for the helpful video! Question on the Glidden Gripper - Did you just stick it while it was fully wet, just rolled/brushed? Or did you give it X amount of time to tack up, or anything similar? I'm trying to get a good adhesive on large foam board to metal (both completely non-porous) and everything we've tried has failed and remained wet because there's no air exposure to the middle of the piece (up to 5 ' x 4'). Thanks!

    I have to defend 3M #77 spray. I have used it for years on foam. When correctly applied it makes permanent bond. Yes, the Acetone formula since 2002 does dissolve the board a bit, if used incorrectly. But this should not concern you since you will never see the bonded surfaces. It is by far the easiest product to use. But do not use on surfaces that will show.
    How to:
    The trick to using #77 is to apply it in light coats from a distance. You need 12-16" from the nozzle (to allow time for the acetone to evaporate), before it cones into contact with the foam. Spray a light coat, Wait 10 minutes and then spray a second coat. Do this for both surfaces. , Wait about 6-10 (even up to 15 minutes) more minutes before bonding the surfaces. the longer you wait the stronger the bond.
    Now this seems like a lot of waiting and we all want instant gratification. Well the gratification is than in 90-120 minutes you have a permanent bond that can be handled It is fully cured in 48 hours depending on temperature and humidity. The less humidity the better.
    It takes a little practice but it can be done.
    Will not gum it cutting tools either.
    So it you need a spray . #77 still works.
    3M also makes a #78 Spray just for Styrofoam too.
    .

    • @Scaryladyvideos
      @Scaryladyvideos  8 років тому

      +DENNIS KOWSKIE Glad it worked for you. In regards to the hot wire - I've thought that it's because the hot wire basically is boiling the foam and foam and Gripper have two different boiling points so a ridge is left behind. It's not a huge ridge but it is something you have to sand or fill if you need it seamless. But, I've found this issue with all glues and Gripper leaves a pretty small ridge compared to most other glues. Also, I use a blade-type hot wire - not a thin wire so it's not a big resistance when I hit the glued areas.

I have Gorilla Glue and will use it to splice together some foam insulated faucet covers to make them larger in order to cover my faucets and their attached Y fittings. There won't be much strain on them so I think it will work well.

    Other glues: I tried low voc (green container) Weldbond contact cement yesterday and it does NOT work well. I also tried original Weldbond contact cement on both white and pink foam and it ate through it! I just tried Best Test Paper Cement and it worked really well! Super 77 works ok if you use it on 2 sides. In other posts I have seen recommendations for Loctite® PL 300® VOC Foamboard Adhesive (used with caulking gun) and 3M™ Fastbond™ Contact Adhesive 30-NF Neutral (water-based).

    I would think so but please do a test first. What I used is the Glidden Gripper that is considered a paint primer. It says it's outdoor/indoor use. White and green label and I got it at Home Depot.

    Not sure if this question was to betternyou but I'll throw a suggestion or two your way. Glidden Gripper is a strong primer paint. You may want to check out your hardware store to see if they carry something similar. Also look for foamboard glues in the caulk section. Finally see if they a spray foam can like the Great Stuff we have here. Hope that helps :)

    I saw this video years ago, made an archway and 2 years later it's still holding up strong. Though now im having to use PPG gripper but it still is economically the best for bigger projects.

      That's great to hear that you are finding the PPG Gripper to work as well as the old Glidden Gripper. Also wonderful to hear your archway is holding up great. Thanks for updating me :)

    PVA glues, which includes wood glue, need air to dry. By spreading out the glue you prohibit air access to the glue. Instead of spreading it like peanut butter put many short strips of glue. On a piece of 4" x 4" for eg. you might put 6 or 9 little one inch strips. Works like a charm and dries much faster. Wood glue is stronger than wood. A few thin strips are more than enough to hold XPS or anything else together and
    it's far cheaper than Gorilla glue and a little goes a long, long way.

    Hey back. Not sure about the effect of the plastic covering being dissolved by the Great Stuff but that makes sense. I've seen that plastic protective cover on 1/2 and 3/4" foamular. You do pull that protective cover off. I usually use 1 1/2 and 2" thick foamular and it doesn't come with the protective plastic cover so not an issue. Hope that helps :)

    Awesome, i'm right in the middle of doing the review on HWFF foam glue. Thought of doing a comparison of other glues, but now i don't have to. You already did it, and you probably did it better then i ever could. Lol

  • @Scaryladyvideos

    Because I have used it in the past and have discovered that over time the Liquid Nails actually dissolves some of the foam. Reading further about it I have discovered that it isn't a good glue for Styrofoam for that exact reason UGH! I liked it too because it's easy to get.

    Fantastic video, I was looking for a 10 x 15 sheet of foam board for the bottom of my Endless Fastlane Pool but wasn't able to find anything larger than 4 x 8. I never thought I'd find a reliable glue, much less a "how to video" on what would work to attach two
    4 x 8 together, lengthwise. Still not sure how it will work on 1" board, not a lot of surface to grab on to but you gave me hope, thank you :)

    Thank you so very much! After trying the PL300 Foamboard adhesive from Home Depot (which is what they recommended) and which reacted the same way as in your video, I was having the same problems getting styrofoam to stick to styrofoam in building a platform for a bearded dragon enclosure. I've heard that you have to have use a heavier application (even both sides) so it has enough to wick into the space between the beads. It dosen't eat over time and it gives a pretty good waterprroof seal. I did some on another project and it had bubbled in a few sections but I pushed it back down and it held after that for the one season it was out. Yes, you can carve with a hot knife :)
