Came here to get my brain shredded with modes. Was not disappointed. Thank you! 🙏
What a time to shred!
What a time to be alive
I really wish I had a UA-cam and Rob Chapman around when I was a teen to learn all of this kind of thing
This is the best description of mixolydian on UA-cam. I’ve tried to understand it for a while and now I do. Thanks Rob.
That really means a lot to me Jon, thank you so much man 🤘🏽
Hey guys, for all the people asking about my T-shirt, my wife purchased it from a store in Malta called “Kiabi”
Eb tuning yes! Been tuning that way for thirty years. Helps with singing as well..and E Mixolydian=F# Min ..just play a whole step up..same scale fingerings.E Lydian=Ab Minor..I hear it from a minor perspective..It works that way for all modes..different intervals but same fingerings..Your way is great and well explained too..I love how we all see the fretboard in different ways!
I appreciate that monumental dump .... of information. Cheers Rob!
You’ve been a huge inspiration to me for many years now, Rob! I’m so glad I found you on the Anderton’s channel, and I’m very thankful for your teachings, seriously. I appreciate you!
Thank you so much, Rob! I love when you post videos like this! So informative and it's just such a joy to hear your licks and riffs! You've been my teacher for 8 years now! Haha.
WILL WORK FOR GHOST FRET!!! Chappers! You have been a major influence on my guitar life! From a video about beginner metal scales to haters bashing you on your charity donations to showing off the ghost fret pro in the 2023 namm videos... I need a purple ghost fret!!!! I am in AZ USA and will shamelessly promote Chapman guitars across the pond if I could simply play a purple ghost fret for a few days!!! Keep it real, brother!!!
The Paul Gilbert exercise at 22:05 is the plateau buster. As we say in the USA. You da man.
Excited to watch this and try out the lessons. I previously watched a vid of yours about scales and being a novice player, practice them every day. You totally inspire me to keep playing and practice, practice, practice.
Every day with one of my 4 guitars is..."me time!" Great video Rob....I love how it don't matter how many years I've been playing...I still after 30 years, learn and find new approaches. Thanks 🙏
You're such a great teacher Rob! I follow your lessons like these very easily and learn so much from them. Please do more of these they are just brilliant.
I'm familiar with the modal scales already but interesting to learn from another perspective and still useful. Especially hearing how Rob phrases mixolydian. However the part about chord progression was amazing. One of the best lessons I've had. Many thanks Rob.
yo I'm digging that yellow. So sick
I am amazed at how well you teach it. Your teaching style is really good. Thank you.
Great vid! My first time experimenting with modes was simply adding a major 3rd to my pentatonic minor, never knew that fitted the mixolydian mode! The intro to 'Catalyst' (Dorje) always comes to mind
Cleared up so much confusion. Excellent, excellent video. I’m a subscriber now.!
Lovely yellow guitar Rob. :-) Free training folks, let’s be grateful.
Really nicely explained lesson. Looking forward to future videos.
Very knowledgeable and Fun . God Bless you Brother 🙏🏼
Rob!!!!GRRREEEEEEETINGS!!! This is so useful and super cool that you take the time to share this. I've been a fan since before y'all relocated. Btw I hope Mediterranean life is a delight!
Greetings and thanks for the support to 🤘🏽
Thanks Rob! really enjoyed this lesson. I'll try to practice the licks for a while so i don't forget them.
Thanks for explaining this in a down-to-earth way.
Great lesson! Super important mode…probably the most important mode to learn along with Dorian in order to play proper modern guitar individualistically.
Yeah I never realized it was that close to being a major scale. Thanks for the great lesson , I feel kind of stupid, I play music for a living and never practiced this scale, lol.
omg, i hear a LOT of pedal videos lately, but you for me is one of the top guys when it comes to guitar-playing !!!
I really appreciate that Jonas, thank you very much
Hey thanks for this, massively helpful 👍
Oh boy...I have a lot to learn...I'd like a teacher like you, Rob! 😊
Thx chap! This helped tremendously. Im kinda stuck on the 5 pent positions but now this adds some flavor.
Well done Rob, great teacher, more of these pls !
Really glad you liked it, thanks for watching dude. :-)
Great stuff! Finally a bit of music theory to help it all make sense!
Heil Goldorak ❤🤘!! Love your T shirt ! Thank you for this awesome lesson❤!!
This video really speaks to me lol “you can just play what you know for
An hour and then go get a beer” basically sums up most of my guitar times
So Glad you did this again, last Year I watched when you did it last year and it set me in a new direction,Like i wanted to, You have a way of communication with Music and Man I jus follow right along, Thaks Rob,Really really appreciate it, big Fan ,long Long Long Long Time Follower,Lol Take it easy brother Your Awesome. Knoxville Tn,USA
Nice video buddy! These videos help me to help my students, it saves me a lot of time. That part of the use of these videos doesn't get mentioned much, but I really do appreciate them. I tell my guys to save them in their 'guitar lessons' playlist so the can easily recall them. Thanks again!
That’s really awesome man say hi to your dudes from me 🤘🏽
@@RobChappers done!
I finally understand,, brilliant lesson mate 👍
This was awesome, thank you so much Rob. I felt like I was in the room having a lesson.
Rob, i really enjoyed your fingering 😂 Joking aside, I really love your tuition videos. If you can, please make more of these lessons. I love learning from you! Thanks!
Lok at Mr @RobChapman being all professional turning down the volume knob before he speaks lol alot could learn from just that
Cheers Rob, popping down a thanks here for the algorithm. Look forward to coming back here a few times to get this down
Brilliant. And so well explained. Thank you
You are welcome bro!
I have sat in a prison cell over 10 years with a guitar ,no amp trying to get my head around all of this ,nice one .just to let you know, I will take a lot from this, more more more
fantastic, thanks Rob !
I like the UFO Grendizer Shirt by the way!!! Great informative mixolydian video Rob! Thank you! 🙏🏼🎸
When I was a little kid growing up in Amsterdam I knew him as “Goldorak”
@@RobChappers I bet you also know Daimos? Voltes V? Mazinger Z? 😊 Classic Mecha/Robots of my time 😁🎸
Rob, your a very cool guy and thank you for teaching this. Cool shirt, it the year I was born.
Thanks Rob . wish i had you as a teacher back in the day
Thank you man that means a lot to me, at least you have me now :-)
THANKS FOR THE SRED MIXOLYDIAN, THAT WAS GREAT !
Nice lesson. Thanks 😊
Great lesson, thank you
You are welcome dude. :-)
Great stuff Rob - Zappa used this scale a lot
Absolutely, love me, some Zappa, especially Return of the hunchback Duke 🤘🏽
@@RobChappers Dweezil ain't bad neither!
Thanks Rob!
The lessons super helpful and then there’s the T-shirt…so goddamn badass!!
Brilliant thank you so much
Wow rob you lost some weight and look great! Keep it up, i learned a lot about guitar and music from the gym.
Love this!
Always sang as vocals are my strongest character.and Guitar always runs second but nowhere near my voice but still a dream .you are absolutely the guy id be happy to play in the Band with if I still played and write with creative minds make Great music for the world needs good no It needs more Great Music,,'s alot which was written in Younger Year's
When the dusty end is your amp! A good follow up would be showing da people snatches of solos that mix pentatonics and mixolydian, thinking wee Angus for a start, for straight rock playing, probably the most useful mode.
I use the same Boss Katana amp. Love it!!!
Finally I get it! Thank you so much! Could you do another lesson on Aeolian? It's my absolutely favourite and can't quite get it right
Thanks! 😊
Wooooo...i haven't see that Yamaha for a long time. Cool!
Really cool scale and you're right- it seems so close to a major scale that it wouldn't really make much difference- until you play it over the right root. Then you hear the difference- this scale has a very uplifting, driven, soaring feel to it. Does Satriani use this a lot? Because it reminds me of his vibe. Also reminds me of Steve Stevens and his Top Gun theme. Great video Rob- well done.
Kind of like For Whom the Bell Tolls for me, These exercises will help you familiarize yourself with fingering and the guitar in general.
Thanks Rob
Yes, similar kind of vibe to that riff I suppose, thanks for watching dude. :-)
@@RobChappers I'm always watching... 👀
Loved this video and you've helped me grow so much as a guitar player and musician!! That Blue guitar with the maple neck looks Awesome!! I was looking at the ML1 hybrid and was curious if the neck is like a strat modern c or thicker? With left hand issues, I find thicker necks cause some pain but a thinner neck is better. Keep it up brother😎
That really means a lot dude thank you so much, by the way the neck on most of our Guitars is a modern C-shaped, we do have a few exceptions like Pete’s new signature 🤘🏽
Thanks for the lesson! I got some of it lol Sad that I used to know a lot of this for piano when I was a kid but forgot it all. I wanted to play guitar and did not dig the piano. NOW I wish I remembered lol Knowing how to read music would be nice. Hope you are well man! If I had been allowed to take guitar instead of piano(the deal was 4 years of piano equals an electric guitar) I might have been a moderately good player. Oh, and instead of getting me the electric he got me an archtop acoustic lol. He ended my rock dreams for sure :)
Acoustic guitars are still awesome, all of this can absolutely be applied to any instrument really, thanks for watching dude. :-)
@@RobChappers True, but when I was 10 back in 1972 I wanted an electric not an acoustic with strings that felt like ropes lol
My brain shut down after few minutes but that Yamaha has a beautiful headstock.
Hello friend!!! NEW SUBSCRIBER HERE!! I CAN'T WAIT TO BINGE-WATCH ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS! YOU MADE THINGS THAT I'VE STRUGGLED WITH FOR DECADES MAKE TOTAL SENSE IN MERE MINUTES! THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO! I'M STARVING FOR YOUR NEXT VIDEO... I'M 51 YRS OLD AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING GUITAR SINCE I WAS 5YRS OLD... BUT THIS "OLD DOG" IS ECSTATIC TO LEARN SOME "NEW TRICKS"! BRILLIANT! I LOVE your Yamaha!! Is it an RGX 6/12?
Looks to be a RGX212. The 612(A/S) have binding.
You've managed to quite clearly explain a particularly complicated named thing.
Off topic I'd love to know-
As the leader of a brand known for innovation and making advancements in guitar available for the masses. If you had to pick a desert island situation guitar, would it be a completely customised to your specification straight from the workshop or a vintage beast?
Thanks man, for me it would be a Ghost Fret - Possibly with a P90 in the neck ❤️
@@RobChappers appreciate the response, grand choice sir 👍
Well shit! Thank you sir!
And thanks for the video also
Rob, what is that blue guitar in the background?
Thank you for the lesson Rob. I was wondering if you could share the setting on your Boss Katana. It sounds awesome. I just added the KATANA MK2 50 to my amp collection after hearing how much you love it and you was right. Its an awesome amplifier. Now to practice your scales.
Hey dude, actually the video before is exactly about the settings of my Katana, so feel free to check that out. :-)
Thanks Chappers
Ever thought about making a high production guitar teaching course? Definitely had an “ah-ha!” Moment during this
Hey buddy, actually I did that but it wasn’t particularly well received - people prefer the relaxed vibe I think also I’d rather enjoy writing music and performing than focus on teaching all the time that’s why I give it away for free on UA-cam
E Flat for the Win!
Hey, I m really curious abut your guitar. Is it a RGX 312? The thing is I played a similar one 10 years ago and it had the best neck I ve ever played on.
Its a 112 with a 312 neck. There is an episode of him doing it up
@@yamahargxtt Thanks! Do you know if there is any big difference between 112 and 312 necks?
@@mckenu as far as I'm aware no. I've had about 10 different rgxs. All were 14 inch radius due to the tremelo
You seemed to play every thing i hear ahead of you playing it .
Yes! Finally!
Whoo.
Rob please, where did you find this T shirt. I grew up watching grendizer in Arabic and French. I am around your age. Where can I find it ?
Actually, my wife bought it for me, and I have no idea where she got it from, obviously somewhere in Malta! I will ask her
@@RobChappers thanks Rob. Btw, I have been a fan since your Gibson VS epiphone video. I still haven’t had a chance to try one of the Chapman guitars because we don’t have them where I live( Saudi Arabia ) not where I come from ( Syria ).
I watched your brand grow since the first ML1 and I am very happy for you and the guys. Watched so many of your vids to the level that makes me feel like I’m know you in person.
Thanks again
🔥🔥🔥
So if you're in the key of C you can only play G mixolydian if it ends with a G? But if the song resolves on a G wouldn't that make it in the key of G. But then you play an A E G instead then play a g mixolydian lick? If you're in the key of A wouldn't you have to play E mixolydian? I wish if the song was in any key I could use any mode like if I'm in the key of B I wish I could just play f# mixolydian. It seems like modes only limit you more, if you can only use it in that Key and ending on that V chord
Hey Rob Wassup Sir 😊👋🏾! Qwik quest, Can u do this lesson in standard tuning of E ?? As i hav a Floyd Rose trem n i didnt tune down...Yeah i cud teanspose a half step of lesson but i jus wanted 2b nsync with u on tha lesson. Any advise LMK 👊🏾 🎸 🤟🏾 TY 😊!!
Yeah, Eb tuning for this video seems like an odd choice. You only have yourself to blame for the Floyd Rose though (😋🎉, jk, etc...)
An electronic drone note or repeating note pattern would've help explain this much better
Hell yes
I've never seen that model of Yamaha before. What is it?
So, does the 5th note become the root?
I came for the guitar. But I stayed for the shirt.........Ohh yeah thanks for the free education (I guess)
This man is responsible for teaching me all the scales I know!!!!! Thanks Rob!
It is my owner, Dude, thank you for supporting me :-)
@@RobChappers always and forever brudda
What model Yamaha is that? So hot.
That Yamaha is a certified shred machine. What year and model is that?
ua-cam.com/video/HYiD8cVbNok/v-deo.html
Totally off topic, but what guitar is that? I see it's a Yamaha, but I've never seen a Yamaha superstrat before
Hi, it’s a 1987 Yamaha RG
Had to go get my yellow LTd out to mirror Rob's.
maglietta meravigliosa !!!! ma .... sei un po' troppo giovane per aver visto goldrake in tv negli anni 70 😉
🎸👍🏻😎
Do one for Locrian so that I live in infinite tension and dissonance.
Maybe you should have played some mixolydian over a major backing track first, then over a drone backing track to show the difference.
The equipment in the background needs dusting, playing hell with my OCD! 😄
Heyy Rob , nice playing as usual .
You know I used to watch anderton's to see you play man, fuck them for replacing you.
Pete's got nothing on you , keep it up very good teaching , it would help if you had diagrams but otherwise very helpful lesson , rock on!!
Wait- you said if we flatten the 7th note it's mixolydian- then you said if we start from the 5th note of the major scale it's also mixolydian- does that mean starting from the fifth note and still flattening the 7th when we get to it?
Only diff between major scale and Mixo is flattened 7th
@@bigtsshackfestival9563 Then why did he say that if we start from the fifth note in the major scale (i.e. playing the 5th position) that was also Mixolydian? They say the same thing about Dorian- if you start from the second note of the scale, they call it Dorian. But something else has to be different or it would just be the second position of the major scale- which is the exact same notes in the exact same sequence, just starting from a different point- "... it makes no sense ladies and gentlemen. If Chewbacca lives on Endore, you must acquit". LOL
That’s the info I got from Brad Carlton. He’s a really good Teacher. His words” A mixolydian is just a fancy way of saying A major scale with a flattened 7th “- Brad Carlton.
