Clockwork Knight 2 (USA Ver.) - Clockwork Knight 1 Unlock Code Finally Found!

  • Merry Belated Christmas! It's been a while~
One of the biggest Clockwork Knight 2 secrets was finally found on Christmas Day 2023, when a cheat code that was rumored all the way back in 1996 was finally found, making for the ultimate Clockwork Christmas Present!
So, what is the story behind this one you ask? It's been known for years now that Clockwork Knight 2 USA was based on the code of the compilation title "Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro", just with "Part 1" removed from the game... but, back in 1996, rumors started circling on Usenet and the early internet in various places that a cheat code could unlock the first Clockwork Knight game in the USA release of Clockwork Knight 2.
At least one US gaming Magazine ("Game Players Magazine - April 1996"), and even an in-store trailed company called "Video Pipeline" were given this information by SEGA for the trailer they made for the then upcoming US release of Clockwork Knight 2 (This video and more information is linked at the end).
In late 2018, I became aware of such rumors. I also realised that the data for the first game was still on the disc, but I was unable to find much else other than that, and as such I was unable to prove that Clockwork Knight 1 was hidden inside Clockwork Knight 2.
Skipping forward to December 2023, a user called "Bo (aka @memory_fallen on Twitter/X)" joined our discord, and along with a bunch of other cool Saturn hacking they've been doing, they decided to start looking into the Clockwork Knight games.
They had been finding all kinds of cool information about how the games run, and even a bunch of cheat codes, and when they finally got to looking into the data of the USA release of Clockwork Knight 2, they by chance came across a code that did something that had simply been a rumor since early 1996... unlock the WHOLE of the first Clockwork Knight game in Clockwork Knight 2!!!!
You read that right... not just the cutscenes or the bosses galore mode... the WHOLE first game has been playable since 1996, and no one knew the cheat code! The code was then publicly revealed on Christmas Day 2023, almost 28 years after the game was released.
So, why is this a thing? Good question! I originally wondered if the data for the first game was left on the disc simply for convenience reasons, but as time went on this seemed unlikely.
I guess they just left it on as a little surprise, but why not publicize the cheat code then? It's not like it hadn't been alluded to before the game released, and it's not like you got the code for completing things, so what is going on? It's likely we'll never know, but at least now we have the cheat code.
I'd like to give a huge thanks again to Bo for finding this code, and putting my 5 year long search and a 27 year old mystery to rest.
If you want to try the cheat code out for yourself, you have 2 options:
    1. At the main title screen press UP, DOWN, LEFT, UP, LEFT, DOWN, RIGHT, UP, L Trigger, R Trigger, L Trigger, R Trigger. When you hear a chime, press start. You can then select "Part 1"!
    2. You can apply a patch to a Redump compliant rip of the game to have it always unlocked. This can be found at cwk.fyi/CK2USP... .

To note, this only works in the NTSC-U (US) release from 1996. It won't unlock the first CK game in any other version.

    Holy heck, the whole game?!
    That's absolutely nuts!
I miss this game so much. I only ever had a demo of 2. We never had the money growing up, so I only ever got games on my birthday or Christmas.

This is so insane, what the hell?! Beautiful find, I may replay CK1 in CK2 once I get started with that one.
Didn't make a very good impression years ago, so I'm willing to give it another go.

      @@clockworkknightweb so true.
gonna do the same for *Bug!* (could not get into it, will probably play the JP version for easier difficulty) and the Saturn version of *Legend of Heroes 3 White Witch* (it felt goofier than normal compared to the pc98 original, which messed with a few scenes for me)

This would now possibly mean that the NTSC USA version is the superior version to own. Yes I know there are subtle differences with all regions and versions which is always interesting and I own all of them anyways.
All we need now is a way to be able to play as Ginger in Part 1.

I would still put Fukubukuro above CK2 US as Part 1 is already unlocked and you have still get the between level dialogue between characters.
I also own them all. Personally, I still rate the original Japanese Joukan and Gekan releases over any other.

WTF?.... The first game is in the USA version of the second game? I didn't think this was the case as the data on the disc looks like it's less then the Japanese Collection disc that sports both games.

Also this is just mind-blowing for a lot of reasons. We really have to look at CK2 as the 1+2 collection. I expect some fun fan coverart to supplement it.
But also the resale market should shift because of it. I know that's not really important but I feel like someone who wants both but doesn't necessarily care about having both physical copies just needs to go all in on #2
In fact eBay sellers could legitimately list the games as ck 1+2 (if they kindly include the code as well.

    • @clockworkknightweb
      @clockworkknightweb  Рік тому +3

The 1+2 collection already exists, and is known as "Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro". This version of CK2 is based on that collection.
I was hesitant about revealing this was potentially a thing for a long time precisely because of it "effecting the resale market". The game already costs a fortune as it is for NTSC-U copies. Now that it has been confirmed, there isn't much I can do.
I don't personally support it going up in price because of a technicality that previously wasn't known. I can't stop it, but I am not thrilled about it, and won't celebrate it.
I want people to be able to play and own these games.

@@clockworkknightweboh yes I do have the collection as well I just meant i now have to view my North American copy of clockwork night too as the collection. Total shift after almost 28 years of thinking otherwise since I was a kid which is cool. I might see if the guy who did my clockwork night puzzle US homebrew case can do a new cover!
But as far as the resale value goes, it doesn't matter honestly. It's more important that something like this comes to light. If anything maybe 2 goes up while 1 goes down.
As a purist, I might still end up using my physical copy of ck1 to play it

@xDerekRx Sorry, but I disagree. The price of the games matter, and if it is now unobtainable for many pricewise because of the revelation of a cheat code then that is just nonsense, especially as this game isn't rare at all.
The retro gaming markets current pricing is already ridiculous enough, especially for US Saturn games. I don't like the thought of even somewhat contributing to that. That's all I have to say on it.
      Enjoy playing Clockwork Knight.

@@clockworkknightweb I agree that US Saturn collection has become unfortunate. I have a complete set myself but almost entirely purchased pre 2008 so I didn't break the bank.
I would not beat yourself up too much on the eBay thing. I don't think it moved the needle that much. I think it's an awesome piece of history that was unlocked, but I don't think it's going to move the price needle that much. Let's not get carried away here.

Changing the date isn't what unlocks CK1 in CK2. It's the code in the description.
Make sure you're doing it on the main title screen before going to the main menu. If you do it on the selection menu or do it on the Part 2 title screen then it won't work.

I have always loved Clockwork Knight and cursed the 'split' into two games as I always had this belief that the two games should be one complete game with no separation.
Nothing but respect to everyone involved in discovering this.
Also really surprised that there are others who actually enjoy the games. All of my experiences with other gamers and YT folks is that CK was seen as a mediocre platformer.
    All the best!
