what i love about it is that he literally has to do it just to get a word in, in the early days atleast. this video shows just how amazing murray was at commentating this sport. he invented this shit!
leadlefthand actually not really, usually about 4-8 Cars are inside 1 second, so the "chance" is about 1:200 correction: I didn't read your comment properly, the chance for 3 drivers is about 1:40000
Hmm... at 1:40000 ... Considering we had 954 grand prix so far since F1 began (as of Azerbaijan 2017), and considering we have 21-race schedules in the future, that means that this should happen again by the year 3808 :)
I remember watching it live. But when i watch it again taday, i dont know ... Maybe there was some failure of the Time-Messure-System ... i dont know ? It looks nearly unbelivable.
Very subtle, but I finally see just how well Murray and Martin worked together! Knowing how much Murray gets excited, whenever Martin wanted to chime in, he would very calmly place his hand on his shoulder and wait for him to finish what he had to say, and add to it (and, another detail I notice, he never corrected Murray TOO often, only occasionally). It doesn't sound like an important detail, but Martin was the PERFECT co-commentator for Murray's style, and this video is a good example of it. As for the correcting, I remember Derek Warwick subbed in for Martin while he was gone racing at LeMans for the Canadian Grand Prix one year, and it felt like he spent the whole hour and a half correcting Murray's mistakes and "Murrayisms". Very intelligent comments otherwise, but it made it clear that it was Murray/Martin that was the true combination!
The hand on the shoulder is the best, they both know exactly what the other is about to do. Great to have video of these guys working together in their element, somehow I don't imagine the same sort of chemistry is displayed in the comm box today with Crofty.
Croft is awful in my opinion. I hate how he screams over the entire first lap and a half even if nothing exciting is happening. I prefer Leigh Diffey or Ben Edwards of the current lead announcers for F1 broadcasts. They don't overpower their co-commentators.
Yeah the partnership of these two was superb and I think sometimes people focus too much on Murray’s mistakes and forget that is actually extremely knowledgable about the sport
If you’re clicking on today, I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Murray Walker has passed away today, at 97 years of age. The voice of Formula One, the voice of my childhood for so many years. And now I’ve got to stop, because I’ve got a lump in my throat. Rest in peace Murray, we love you.
best commentator ive ever heard in motorsport...very intense and the choice of words for each moment is perfect...its like he puts you in the drivers seat....find another murray walker...ha ha ha yeah rite
Well he is a cynical chap :) I think he feels there was something dodgy going on with the times but obviously can't say it. From where they crossed the finish line as the time was going, looks like Frentzen, Villeneuve then Schumacher for the fastest lap. Too much of a gap between the clock and line from each driver to have identical times
I heard a max Mosley interview on this he thought Bernie had fixed it and turned and said that to him and max said when he saw the shock on Bernies face he knew he didn’t. John Williams had said the Williams time had worked out the correct order through a 4the digit. JV got pole by 2 - 10 thousandth of a second
I remember this, it was the first full race weekend I followed. Monaco 97 was the first GP I saw, this was the first qualifying I saw. And this 1:21.072 will be a time I will remember for the rest of my life. Unbelieveable this is almost 20 years ago...
The other funny thing besides a young Ted Kravits, Is how all the TV networks lost there timing screens, Our old mate Bernie had a trick in his pocket for the last race:)
Some of my best times in front of the television. Murray Walker is hands down the best commentator we've ever had, an absolute national treasure. I want the future to be a synthesized Murray voice that can 'watch' and report on all races. Actually make that all sports. My interest in F1 went at the same time Murray hung up his mic. I miss these times...
The Master and the Apprentice (at the time anyway - now definitely the Master). Thanks for all the memories Murray and more power to you Martin, long may you continue. I'm a long-time Williams fan so I remember this qually session vividly. We thought this was amazing but then came the race...
Oh my god I’d love to see the whole thing that this clip is from. It was The Murray Walker Story shown I believe in 1997 or very early 1998. The session being shown in the clip is the final Qualifying Session at Jerez 1997! Absolutely Magical!
I watched F1 for over a quarter of a century (before Hamilton came along). This qualifying session, is the most stunning qualifying session ever. I remember watching this live, totally mesmerising. And to hear the legend that is Murray Walker, is always so very special.
I seem to remember that this was from an ITV special called The Murray Walker Story or something like that.Wish I could find the whole thing somewhere - I remember watching it loads when I was 6.
1:21.072 that is: THREE DRIVERS on 1 minute, 21 seconds, point zero, seven, two Will Never Happen again. I was watching Live ! when Live used to mean LIVE not 20 seconds behind real time.
Top 3 drivers with the same pole time and they were also Top 3 on points in the championship. And the video is 3:33 in length. Surely not a coincidence :)
Its really fun to see how animated Murray became during these broadcasts. The mom jeans, wow! Of course, this is an incredible anomaly to have a triple dead heat to the 1/1000 of a sec. No clue how to calculate the odds.
I would have to check my library, but I dont think they ever had 3 cars set the same time for pole position even back in the 50's when timing was only done to the tenth of a second.
@@malcolmmcleod6020 don't think it's ever happened anywhere on the grid with 3 identical times... Was it a coincidence that the timing monitors all went down then miraculously get this unbelievable result for the title decider??
It's a bit suspicious isn't it that they had a complete blackout computer failure then suddenly that computer decides 3 drivers did the exact same time....hmmmmm
Apparently the timing clock wasn't programmed to go below 1:21.072 at the end of Sector 3. It sure looks like the clock was at 1:20.8 when Frentzen crossed the line.
For a reference, if you look closely at 0.25x speed, you'll see that actually JV seems to cross the start/finish line at 1:20.4 while the other two cross it at 1:20.5 - however the finish line doesnt seem to be the part where the timing counts. All three were very close but its strange indeed
Brundle for technical, Murray for Mr and Mrs Random. Only Murray could buy it . Looks like Brundle got it. Of course the three drivers never did the same time. Williams did its own investigation and said that times were different but refused to give the details (do not mess with Mr E )
I do know the hand placed on Murray's shoulder at the end is their 'signal' for communications off the mic, but it just looks like Martin was about to ask 'hold up, wtf is this ?!?!?!' lol
Love the hand on the shoulder when MB wants to say something
You took the words right out of my mouth... unless I'm very much mistaken.
Just a great partnership!!

Most modern commentators would gloss over or make a passing mention of the timing screens blowing out. Murray Walker made it part of the excitement!
R.I.P. Murray Walker - the voice of our childhoods
The master at work. And a huge loss for us all. Rest well, Murray. You've earned it.
Murray was the best commentator ever. He made F1 accessible, exciting and funny to newbies and lifelong fans.
now THAT is how you commentate!!
Ricky Williams - his epic commentaries were AB-SUR-LUTE-LY BRIIIIIIIIIILIANT!
Trek001 he could make an egg rolling down a hill exciting..
Ricky Williams - And here they are... Hakkinen with a battery egg and Schumacher was a farm fresh one...
SCHUMACHER!!!! ITS SCHUMACHER!!! SCHUMACHER is OUT of the BATTERY EGG grand prix...
OFF! OFF! OFF! OFF! OFF! OFF GOES HAKKINEN!
The odds of 3 drivers setting the exact same time is probably slimmer than winning the lottery. Insane qualifying session. Doubt it will happen again.

Can we please scan in murray Walker's voice in a computer, and use some sort of AI to let it commentate on F1 broadcasts? That would be great!
Get rid of David croft
Hamilton's slowing down... slowing... and he's got the fastest lap!
