Another great episode about a legendary place to eat chicken that is retiring now after many years of serving people Thanks Shane and Texas Bucket List.🇺🇲📺🇺🇲
When I was a child, my Dad would drive us from Memphis, Tennessee down to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida for our Summer vacation. Either going down or coming back, we'd always stop in Mendenhall, Mississippi where there was the Round Table Restaurant. It was similar to this, but the tables were large round ones with Lazy Susans. On each level was a variety of Southern delicacies. It was so so good! The coolest part was that there was no cashier. You'd simply leave your money in a cigar box by the door. Better times indeed.
I live about an hour South of Mendenhall. There used to be quite a few of those revolving table restaurants in Mississippi. The one in Columbia closed not long ago. But I am pretty sure The Dinner Bell in McComb is still open! Give it a visit when you're passing through.
I only had the blessing of eating there five or six times or so. It was great each and every time. I had great conversations with a variety of people and had by lunch bought for me out of nowhere by strangers. The last time I ate there last year I paid for a couple that sat with me and were kind enough to have a wonderful conversation with me. I hope that they had the delightful surprise of wondering why a stranger bought their lunch without a word. I had the joy of paying forward my free lunch to them. Miss you all and will always remember Allen's!!
Goodness gracious I was a long time resident of dear old redondo 2 blocks from esplanade . Prior to that palos verdes. A lot of my family from Texas and this was our every Sunday meal. Delicious
I worked in the foodservice industry as a sales rep in the early 90's and had to relocate to Sweetwater. Allen's was one of my customers. It was a throwback to an earlier time. Fantastic fried chicken and sides. It will be missed.
My hometown and knew family well. Sad none of kids wanted to continue the tradition. However we will miss them and hope they enjoy their retirement. I will miss that pea salad and sweet potato salad.
Just my luck. I don't live anywhere near there but when I heard "fried rattlesnake". It was on. Then I had a moment of contemplation. Is this possibly the place that inspired the guy that started Church's Fried Chicken. If someone knows, I'd love to know. Sadly, as of this moment, they closed 8 days ago. 😢
These old school restaurants are closing left and right unfortunately. We need these places so we know home cooking at a reasonable price from a restaurant.
Supposedly there is a branch in Abilene, but it is so poorly marked that I have never been able to find it, although I would find it annoying to have to set at a table with someone who would rather tell stories than allow a person to eat in peace.
Damn nab it, this economy is really going downhill. I’ve watched the two features on this place I’ve been really wanting to go down there even though I’m from California but it shows you that this economy. Has been really affecting small businesses I mean it really impacted during the pandemic and it looks like it’s still continuing.
I think that with old mom and pop places like these the issue is due to a reluctance from the children to take the business over as they may want to become a professional or move to a more developed / urban area.. Same thing happens in many countries!
Can you imagine that in Ontario Canada, KFC has secretly just changed the chicken to Halal Chicken...It's awful, I think the Colonel would roll over in his grave!
@@czechmate6916 more so than america? Now this place is in Texas correct? The same texas that freed their slaves two and a half years later... but I believe you, they seem nice... im just bs'n around😎

💗🙏
Many great memories from meals there with my grandparents, folks and family. Sorry to see such a unique and special place close down.
When I worked in Sweetwater back in 2011 I went to both the old house for lunch and the new building for buffet dinner! It was outstanding!
After watching these videos for a long time, I need to take a food tour of Texas
I was thinking the same thing 🙂👍
I like Texas bucket list videos on UA-cam from the imperial county California 👍🇺🇲
I ate here with a friend of mine passing through to Big Bend national park. The nicest people on earth! A lost treasure
God bless the Allen's, and a thank you to them.
Reminds me of an song, who's gonna fill their shoes? Unfortunately, when they close, it never comes back...
Reminds me of Picketts House in Woodville!
Greetings from Redondo Beach 🇺🇸🇺🇸Looks delicious. I will for sure visit this place when I am in TX 👍🏽

Man, they didn't wait. They are closed and their Facebook page is already gone. It's only been 3 days since they announced their closure.
Sad to see this place close down. The food was great.
we had a place like this in Kentucky sad when it closed
yep, there are a lot of Kentucky Fried Chickens closing nationwide...
That crunch❤ I think there should be more chicken places like this. They're rare❤
Dang, I always stop in Sweetwater on my way to Amarillo.
Been there a couple times while working out of Sweetwater. Well worth it! Will be back for sure.
No, you won’t
Google the place to add to places were I want to go and to my surprise it says that this place is permanently closed!😢
This place fits the profile of a traditional restaurant in Texas!
This is awesome

Good southern cooking. Love it 😊
best way to communicate.. Break Bread with them, sit and eat and talk to each other..
Such a shame no one carried it on
This place reminds me of Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah Ga
Miss Allen's was the best
Now my mother-in-law used to make good fried chicken. This makes me look like put this on my bucket list😎💯👍
Looks like a great place to eat. Sorry to see it closed down
Food can be simple and good.
Man we where planning a trip
Yummo 🧡
Skin on, bread crumbs, PAN FRIED chicken is the way to go!
Good things must come to an end! 😢😢

So hungry right now. Terrible video to watch. Chicken looks AWESOME.
My kind of place, my kind of food and my kind of people to sit down and share a meal with. 👍👍
Has anyone been to the blessing hotel in Blessing Texas for lunch ?
Dang shame they shut down, sure was good eatin'. Wish them the best in their retirement, they deserve it.
They permanently closed 😢
It's hard to find fried chicken on the bone anymore. Mostly just what they call tenders anymore. I'll definitely stop in when i get out that way 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Heartbreaking it is gone.
That’s how it needs to be done, from history.
Supposedly there is a branch in Abilene, but it is so poorly marked that I have never been able to find it, although I would find it annoying to have to set at a table with someone who would rather tell stories than allow a person to eat in peace.
Why close, sell it!
And she took another wall down and when the roof caved in, she put the last wall back up...

Don't think it had anything to do with the economy, it had to do with no younger people willing to take over a business.
They need a lazy Susan on the table like my Grandmother had at her restaurant for the vegetables
I’ll listen to this dude and went to Dirty Al’s in South Padre Island. Worst service and food was terrible. I wouldn’t recommend anybody go there.

Remove hat indoors.
As a host I would stop trying to act and not copy how all the other host from the past.
Be yourself is the key just saying 😊
Eating snakes. Really disgusting 🤢 and not to mention UnGodly😮
Don't look like brothers are welcomed
I’m Mexican I ate there no issues people we’re friendly.
they talk about.
I’m sure if you went in there they would make you feel welcomed.
