Excellent technique!!! I love watching how others do things like this.- thank you for sharing
+Al Forte
Thanks Al
I'm the same myself.
Peter, I want to thank you for giving us this great technique. Is the best I have seen. Thank you from Mexico!!!
Thanks Guillermo
Awesome Video! I am certain to try your technique when i do mine.
Also, thanks for your valuable input on CNC with Dave tonight!
Cheers,
Lyle
No worries Lyle

Peter
Thanks Peter, you inspire me, retired now and just getting back into my home built CNC machine ( I needed the push) Cheers Roger
Glad it helps out.
Don't know if I have inspired anyone before, so thanks
Cheers
Peter
Thanks for the video. Really loving the paint technique, will definitely try.
Thanks Varina.
That calendar turned out great Peter. I've got to try that painting method. It looks so much easier than the way I've done it in the past. Thank you for your great videos.
Thanks Steve
Peter, finished my calendar just in time to paint it, great video and technique!
Sent me a photo when your done Jim.
I would love to see it.
Cheers
Peter
Love it Peter! I think I will try this technique. Thanks so much for posting.
Thanks Troy
Thank you! Great video and a fantastic result. Cheers from Canada!
Thanks
Thank you very much Peter for this inspiration and for sharing your files.
I finished my golden version today with a 60° V-bit. It came out great!
The patina i achived with black transparent decor wax from Osmo.
The effect is the same as with the acrylic paint, but the handling is much simpler. You have much more time until you have to clean up the surface.
Best regards
JayDee
+nemex04
Nice one JayDee
Thanks for watching and glad to hear it came out good for you. Will have to investigate your method.
Cheers
Peter
Excellent work. Lots of good tips. many thanks
+Pete Ski
Thanks Pete
Amazing piece ! Love it
Thanks
Nice job, Peter. I made mine on a 3040 machine so it is a lot smaller than yours. To finish it ( and you will love this), I used a stiff bristle brush to remove all the little dags that were left behind and then brushed in Brown boot polish - in the little round Kiwi can. The petroleum based polish soaked into the MDF and once dry, I could polish it up to a dull sheen; it looks spectacular!
Sounds interesting. Must try out the boot polish method one day.
Cheers
Peter
Nicely done. I may have to make one now that I have seen how yours turned out.
Thanks Jerry
excellent finishing work!
+U Do It
Thanks
Looks awesome
Thanks Manuel.
Cheers Peter
Thanks Peter for another great video
+Terry Cupp
Thanks Terry
Peter, WOW, when you told me that I would be surprised how quick the finish went you were right. That was a really clever technique. Great job on the entire project. Paul / paulsmessyworkshop
+pcorlis
Thanks Paul
Nice painting the project came out great.
Thanks Lou.
Very cool. Thank you for sharing.

Amazing work buddy !
+RoboCNC Frees- & Graveerwerk
Thanks Marcel
Great made peter beautiful effect
+MegaTopdogs
Thanks MTD
I wonder about using that Fleck Stone paint on the material before it's cut, then carving the pattern through the finish. That or possibly cutting the pattern, spraying the Fleck Stone, then recutting the pattern at a faster feed rate - just to carve the detail back into the material.
I do love the use of acrylic paint over the enamel. I didn't know that meths (denatured alcohol) would remove the acrylic without effecting the enamel like it does. Thanks very much for that tip, Peter!
+Mark Lindsay
To be honest the more I think about the stone fleck the less I like it. Strange because I have thought for years that it would look great.
I believe wiping paint with Meths is a test used to determine if a paint is acrylic or oil based.
Cheers
Peter
Great video Peter. I just made my first calendar. I have applied the shellac and the spray paint. Its time to put the black acrylic paint. How long after applying all of the black paint did you wait to wipe it down with the denatured alcohol (methylated spirits)?
Peter, great job!! thanks for sharing your work. I hope someday I will able to do a job like yours, an Aztec Calendar. Sorry for my english. I am from México.
+Manchez manchez
Thanks Manchez
Nothing wrong with your English. A+
I wish everyone was as good as you.
Cheers
Peter
Peter, What measures does your job have?
It measure 23" or 550mm in diameter. You can download the file from my website in both VCarve and DXF format in part 1 of this video.
Cheers
Peter
Hi Peter thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! How many coat of the shellac do you apply I’ve been putting on one.
And finding it ah just OK but could be better. I don’t want to put a second coat on because I’m finding it time consuming.
+GlenGH
Thanks Glen
I only put on one coat after it was cut.
wonder if you can use black shoe polish to fill in the grooves , prolly be eazier with hot weater as it hardly dries though it might allways make youre fingers dirty when youre touching it
might be able to revive the waterbased stain if you add a little water and maibe heat it up a little
I think the shoe polish would start to soften and run in hot weather with my luck.
I'm afraid the stain is too far gone to revive it but a good thought.
Cheers
Peter
Hi Peter, great work,is the shellac necessary? Doesn't the copper paint seal it as well? I have carved one and am getting ready to apply a finish but don't have any shellac. I do have some mineral spirits would that work? Also you dont put a clear coat finish? Thank you
I didn't try the copper paint direct onto the board but I suspect it would not give as good a finish without the shellac as I think it will soak in unevenly and give a blotchy appearance. I didn't coat the final job in clear once finish as each paint is a finish in its own right.
Cheers
Peter
found the file many thanks.
Dear Sir, Thanks for making like easy. Can you please tell me what depth you set your cutter and what size/diameter is your piece of MDF. Thank you
Thanks Paul.
The calander is 550mm in diameter with a flat depth of 7mm.
Cheers
Peter
Thank you. I am suprised that depth was set at 7mm.
I cut mine at 3mm ising a 90 degree 0.25 shaft bit from think and tinker. Sorry to be a pain, can you please supply all your settings speeds etc. Thank you
I'm getting sore eyes looking at your other high quality videos
Do you have a video on making sense of stl files?, thanks again.
Hi Paul
I used a 90 degree 12mm cutter. I started at 100ipm but probably increased it to 200ipm using the override. The speed is 10000 RPM. I would have been better if I had set the flat depth to 12mm instead of 7mm as it would have been quicker.
Are you aware that this a VCarve not an engraving. The depth of cut varies with the width of the piece being cut.
I don't have anything on STL files.
Cheers
Peter
Did you sand the carving after applying the Shellac? I asked because after I applied the Shallac, it feels like it raised the grain, it is rough. Thank you.
Hi David, I can't remember but I think I gave it a very light sand I make it smooth.
Cheers
Peter
Great job. One question: is the spray on paint also water based like the black paint?
No. It is solvent based which is why it is not affected by the methylated spirits (denatured alcohol).
Cheers
Peter
CNCnutz (Peter Passuello) thanks for the quick answer!
Hi there, calendar is beautiful, where can I find STL file from it so i can do it for my self, thanks
This is not a 3D model so there is no STL file.
This is a Vcarve and the DXF file is available through my website by following the link in the description.
www.cncnutz.com/2017/05/
Cheers Peter
could you try a spray on glue and then sprinkle on fine play sand to give a sandstone effect
Interesting thought Ian.
Then it would look like sandstone :-)
lol hence the sandstone effect I mentioned ;)
Amazing job I'm about to cut my first one. what was that spirit you used to clean after the black paint?
+INSCO DESIGNS
Methylated spirits.
I believe it is called denatured alcohol in the USA.
Cheers
Peter
Great thanks where did you get your file from I have traced a picture in aspire but it still has alot of errors and alot to fix. What was your flat depth of your cut to get those kind of details?
+INSCO DESIGNS
Please visit my website and use the file I provided in part one of the project.
Cheers
Peter
Sorry I missed the 2nd part of your question.
I used a flat depth of 7mm.
Cheers
Oeter
Great video you said you cut to a depth of 7 mm? What was your depth step in mm per cut to get to the 7mm?
What would it be like in silver and black
Good question but i think the copper color might look better.
Prove me wrong Chris. 😄
Cheers
Peter
Sir i want to buy this thing, will you provide me this calendar.
hi, so coo!!!l. where can i get the file for this carving even if i have to pay for.
Follow the link under part 1 of the video.
Did you apply a final clear when finished?
No. I left it as shown.
Is methylated spirits New Zealand for methyl hydrate?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol
Denatured alcohol. I had to look it up myself.
Great job Peter. I guess I need to see how that Masso cuts an Aztec calendar. :-)
That would be great to see Dave.
Cheers
Peter
can you direct me to the file to cut it if possible? or do you sell tihis it's for a project. i'm doing
Go to the first video in the Aztec
Calendar series and follow the link under it.
