@Elise Khoo Oh yeah! I am beside myself after all of the reviews that have come out for it. Todd Phillips said it heavily revolves around The King of Comedy which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Love Rupert Pupkin.
She’s dressing him with a sweater she made and talks about him in the 3rd person. Two nutty people that have no clue about reality. They live in their crazy minds. I know it’s a movie but the scene is perfection. You truly believe these two characters think they are normal.
Scorcese films are stupendously funny and this particular gem is so well acted all over. "What do you mean who am I? I am the one who's suing, I am the lawyer"
""Am I going to hold this thing to next Shavout?" brilliant line in a fantastic script. They apparently have no awareness that so much of their conversation incriminates them and gives vital clues to apprehend and arrest them for kidnapping. It is so ironic that they are simultaneously fanatically obsessed with him yet ready to possibly kill him...what tangled weds some crazy people weave.
One of the best lines in the movie is "let me learn from you." I use this all the time with my ex-wife when we hit a crossroads in our conversation. I also add "let me get close enough to you to learn."
Scorsese, as with James Cameron and Ridley Scott, shoots and edits these amazingly fluid and “simple” dialog sequences that are directing and editing works of movie-making beauty. It’s another clinic. The dialog. The pacing. The reaction shots. The off-camera voices. The unexpected. So much fun to watch the back and forth between the connected scenes and the interactions.
That scene absolutely kills me. It's also hilarious that the big wig executives know his lawyer by name. Lol! It's also hilarious that they're arguing over a potential fine when they think a man might be murdered. I feel like this movie blistered showbusiness brilliantly.
Maybe this "Martino" character is because of Dean Martin? I've always wondered that... (Or maybe just a jab aimed at the director lol). Anyway, this is a great movie. One of my favorites. And Jerry was great in it. His scenes are my favorites.
This was only a couple of years after the murder of John Lennon. Now celebrities need security more than ever. One guy who handles such matters said, "The question isn't. 'is there a stalker?" The question is, 'how many are there?' "
As much as everyone focuses on the two psycho main characters in the film, nobody is talking about how all this could have been avoided if Jerry wasn’t a douchebag to his fans that probably care more about him than most of his “real” friends. Life lesson, always be a good person and hear everybody out and give most people a fair shot or opportunity. You never know what’s going on inside the minds of most people.
That rule is fine for the average non-famous person to follow. We average people meet far fewer individuals, and are under far less expectations than a famous person. A famous person’s “public”….. as an entity…( not individuals for the most part ) , is an evil all consuming Monster. The above response to your comment is absolutely right. You completely miss the point of the movie. And while living the life of fame and fortune is in itself very abnormal, and can often only be endured by a person with their own particular set of flaws, the Jerry Langford character is reacting in a very normal way to his situation.
Dude...seriously? Look at Jerry's life. He's alone. He's isolated. There's no wife or girlfriend and he eats alone. Celebrity is hollow for Jerry but Rupert is so very sure that he wants a part of Jerry's 'fabulous' life. Jerry on stage isn't Jerry when he's at home watching TV either, so no, Jerry's fans don't care more about him than his real friends, which appear to be few. Jerry literally owes nothing to anybody. Even when trying to be nice, he's told that he should get cancer. He puts out art, the people like it, transaction is made, performances to say thank-you performed and that's it. He should protege and befriend some weirdo off the street why? Because he owes it to him? How dare Rupert do this to a man who has entertained him for decades. How ungrateful is THAT? Jerry was the saddest character in this movie imo.
So many different points being made in this dark movie...fame media and mental health plus ultimate sympathy for fans and the star. The lies that are told to us all every day to sell a product.
I was under the impression that with them filming so early, they had enough time to get to Jerry, apprehend Rupert, & with him being in jail, the studio wouldn't have to fulfill their end of the bargin with showing Rupert's act.
Rupert's right and Jerry's wrong. And so was Dean right. AND Gary. AND Patty. AND Mister Bascomb. AND that bitch, Missus Bascomb. Jerry was just no good. Five minutes to listen to Rupert's tape. A few bucks you could have left to your wife and kids. Let's all fart in Jerry's general direction. Your pal, Chris
De Niro out comedies Lewis. He pushes the boundaries and delivers a funny, yet fascinating performance that puts even full-time comedians to the back seat. DeNiro over Lewis - by a wide margin. The true King of Comedy
EngleHump, De Niro was great in this movie. I agree! I love De Niro. However, it has nothing to do with comedy! He wasn't the king of comedy. Lewis was also amazing in this movie as he was in many other movies. Lewis was definitely the king of comedy at least for millions of people including myself. Nobody speaks of De Niro as the king of comedy. De Niro was a brilliant actor, but not a comedian!
10:25 His lawyer talks them into a more aggressive plan of action. Rupert is arrested. This is a day dream. You hear sirens in the background because it is the police taking him away in real life.
"That's it we're suing. We're going to sue. We're going to sue everybody." I always loved that part lol
LOL! Me too! " The FBI."
@Elise Khoo LOL! Great defense but the judge will be like "Pick a personality because one of you are going to prison. I love this scene.
@Elise Khoo It's actually from a Paul Mooney stand up. It's called "Analyzing White America."
@Elise Khoo Are you ready for Joker?
@Elise Khoo Oh yeah! I am beside myself after all of the reviews that have come out for it. Todd Phillips said it heavily revolves around The King of Comedy which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Love Rupert Pupkin.
Jerry Lewis is brilliant in this movie.
Disciple1000 yes!!! He was amazing in it !!!
Because he plays himself: A fucking asshole!
lol...judgment, judgment, and more judgment...must love some people in this country!
He played himself. In real life he was a jerk.
I don’t even like the guy. Never have. Think his comedy is stupid. However, he is absolutely brilliant in this film.
She’s dressing him with a sweater she made and talks about him in the 3rd person. Two nutty people that have no clue about reality. They live in their crazy minds. I know it’s a movie but the scene is perfection. You truly believe these two characters think they are normal.
Crazy people think they are normal and the rest of us are the crazy ones making their life impossible.
@@crochetedlace2838 You mean roommates? :)
@@crochetedlace2838 not all crazy people, a good portion of crazy people know they are crazy and not normal.
Scorcese films are stupendously funny and this particular gem is so well acted all over. "What do you mean who am I? I am the one who's suing, I am the lawyer"
Jerry Lewis gave such an amazing performance in this movie i still can't believe it...Deniro's best role too
I love Sandra Bernhard, she's perfect for this role.
Totally spot on!
She couldn’t have been more perfect, deserved an Oscar.
Jerry Lewis is superb in this scene :)
It's kind of scary because he was actually a really horrible guy in real life
I watched the traile for the Joker, heard about this movie, wached it and now I can´t think about these movies separately.
This is the movie to watch before going to see "The Joker"!
Joker ripped it off
Joker can't touch this masterpiece
Joker is trash.
The dialogue here is great! Like real people
This is the scariest movie ive ever seen!! because its so true.
Yea!!
I agree I think this is way more scary than taxi driver.
It’s a masterpiece because Rupert knew what to do to Jerry.
""Am I going to hold this thing to next Shavout?" brilliant line in a fantastic script. My buddy Jon Cooper used to repeat that line constantly in real-life situations. Perfectly sarcastic.
Seeing Jerry bound up in tape is hilarious ! De niro plays his part well top scene from a good movie!!
Yes.
They could've just taped him around the chest. Not up to the neck.
6:37-7:24 Lovely monologue.
When "jay" rose up saying "thats it we are suing" I thought for a second that this is Rupert in disguise
Now he’s all smooth talking being a mentor.
Came back just to watch Jay The Lawyer! Damn, I love that part.
Sandra and Rupert are two twisted people where they have a Harley and joker relationship haha
without the abuse.
@@princesstamika the abuse didn't come into later with new authors. Initially they weren't that toxic really.
Absolute Classic Movie !

“That’s the way they treated me”
The red sweater scene was fucking hilarious.
Jerry really does look good in red. 👍
“Sit down. I said sit down”.
Her mood switches from sheer adoration to stone killed hostage taker. Frightening.
Jerry Lewis was amazing in this movie.
Agreed. One of his best performances.
Fucking kills me when Masha has him try on those clothes.
I think Jerry Lewis should have started playing mobsters after this one
Rupert didn't give two squats about Jerry. It was all about personal glory. Getting back at all those people who didn't believe in this goldbrick.
You’re completely wrong!
Can you believe this movie Boom? I think it's brilliant.
best line is her saying am i going to hold this gun until next sha-voo-us
Shavuos
5:36
9:39
"Only an idiot kidnaps."
He gives me his word.
And what else?
And what else Jerry?
It’s sad that Jerry Lewis is gone….😢😢
It likely came as relief to him
8:00 I love this part hahaha
Camera man "Helen Keller's" favorite color should be corduroy. It works better than plaid.
Half of these lines were improvised dialogues, between Rupert and Masha, and then Jerry's explanation and apologies.
"The FBI" 🤣🤣🤣
That scene absolutely kills me. It's also hilarious that the big wig executives know his lawyer by name. Lol! It's also hilarious that they're arguing over a potential fine when they think a man might be murdered. I feel like this movie blistered showbusiness brilliantly.
4:55 his arms look so small here. Must be the angle 😂
Present-day DeNiro fantasizes in real life about doing this to Trump
Ironic because Jerry Lewis was in favour of Trump before he passed on.
9:50 guy on the couch cracks up

Jerry Lewis is the best actor in this scene. Robert D was miscast
sophie75 Are you kidding? This is one of the best roles De Niro’s ever played

I totally with what Rupert does to Lewis in this scene because he fucking deserves it.
