    On a lot of shorts the underlying can fall below zero… & that’s why you short commodities. So when you are forced to buy the negative value commodities contracts you end up with a front yard full of oil & rotting corn when they get exercised after being unable to sell on the open market AND you make a huge profit on top of getting free crude oil for your new oil tanker that you were forced to buy.

    Multi million dollar idea:
    You make a short with half your bank savings in a random company and with the other half you buy stocks.
    Then you incourage other people to do the same,
    You then go to reddit and tell them that theres a massive short going on
    Now you dont sell the shorted stock so you only lose the fee and through reddit the value skyrockets so you get profit.
    Bonus points if you sell the shorted stocks also and the company the plumits due to an inflated marketvalue.
    You have now made gigaprofit with a non pyramid scheme

    Okay so hear me out: right before a company’s quarterly or yearly earnings report, you BOTH purchase the stock and short the stock for the same price simultaneously. And THEN, you wait till after the earnings call and see if the price increases or decreases, and get rid of the option/future depending on if it went down or up…. Seems fool proof!
    Or is that just the same as *not* buying a stock before the report and then buying or shorting depending on what happens after the call..? I think I just thought of something that felt genius but was truly just stupid

    • @SunnyNagam
      @SunnyNagam 10 місяців тому +5

      Imagine this, earnings come out, stock goes up, when you can you get rid of your short, and just as you did that stock starts going back down. Now you just sold your short for a loss and you call is at a loss too, now you're broke and were better off not doing anything. It's all gambling at the end of the day (unless you have insider info).
      Trust me, there are teams of PhD students getting paid 6 figures on Wall Street whose job it is to think of all this stuff so they can make money off of you losing money.

    The "why dont they print more charizards" gave me the idea of a charizard staking system where you get regualar payments for letting then hold your cards. This lets them sell more cards without diluting the price as much cause it keeps the rare cards out of circulation for collectors and they just calculate the payments to be less than what they will make off selling all the packs containing the charizards

  • @Rellan_Pan

    What is the government shorts the Charizard, and then immediately prints more Charizards so that their value goes down? Then they can guarantee that they will profit from it

  • @PillsburyDoughboy218
    @PillsburyDoughboy218 10 місяців тому +1

    Your losses are only unlimited if you take a naked short position. Ironically most "short positions" are a hedge to downside risk. So If I own Apple stock and I don't want to take the risk of a volatile Apple presentation/earnings call, you could take a short position. The max loss in this case is capped at what you paid for the option, the option premium.

    are there big advantages of being the lender? If im planning to hold my shares for 20+ years regardless of price changes, how do I go about being the lender in this situation and getting the small fee for lending? seems like a pretty free bit of extra money

    • @Ahwleung.
      @Ahwleung. 10 місяців тому +2

      No, because the brokerage is the party absorbing the risk (aka eating the loss when a r/WSB subscriber gets margin called) and thus they get the fees. In fact, when you enable options trading on your account the fine print usually states that the brokerage will be able to use your shares for securities lending, with no risk to you (but also no reward). At certain NW levels you can enable securities lending but you are now exposed to the risk.

    In practice you cannot lose infinite amounts on shorting, simply because your broker/bank/exchange will automatically buy the stock to settle the debt, once you've no more money. In practice you can still have to pay some amount due to the differences and timing of the buy, but to owe an infinite amount (eg 100 trillion) it would require that price change to be instantaneous, like

    Instead of borrowing and selling the Charizards, you can spend a very small premium and buy the right to sell 100 Charizards at the current price. Thus if ur wrong ur just out the 1-20%premium. But if ur right you make 100x the profit of a short
