I haven't used my H5 in months, so I needed a refresher on how to format an SD card, plus I learned some extra things in the process of listening to your tutorial. Much appreciated, thanks!
Thanks for this video! Exactly what I needed. Completely forgot about the mic running on phantom power. Thought it was broken for a minute. Perfect tutorial.
I just got my H5 today! Thanks very much for the video. I've already tested the mic out and the audio blows my mind. I used to use a RODE Go Mic, so the upgrade was totally worth it.
Hello, My Zoom H5 is on its way as I type and already I am so much for confident in using it for the first time. You are a great teacher and I am grateful. Rachel
Thank you so much for a great INFORMATIVE AND BRIEF review. I love the H5 Recorder and have been using mine for my Bachelors of Science Degree Program at Full Sail University and have used it in a Sound Design project for a video game. Crazy considering I am an Audio Productions student. I love this recorder and I love the Demo/Overview that you have provided for us. Brief and Clear...Loved This. Thank You.
Trying to download the files via the cable is like trying to push a gallon of water through a cocktail straw. The speed is like maple syrup. Especially when you're dealing with Wave files.
I really like my Zoom H-5. Especially when I need to do voice over for any of my videos and don't feel like sitting at my studio desk. I can hook up one of my quality 🎤 s and do voice over from in my bed if I want to. I just ordered a power cable adapter for it so I can use that instead of having to use batteries. Very Quality Product.
Hi, Thank you for this. Very helpful. However, on my new Zoom H5, both the 1 and 2 lights come on simultaneously, instead of one at a time, as in your video. Would you know why? Thanks.
Is the SD slot so fragile that it’s liable to break? Also what’s the point of adding a mic into channel 3? For what purpose? Can you overdub or just add an extra mic? Why would you need 4 channels in this recorder?
thank you so much for this great info. I'm getting familiar with this product so its very exciting. I have a cooking UA-cam channel and its been almost a year so now I want t impress everyone with new videos w the recording products, mics and lighting.
You don’t have to turn the Zoom H5 off and back on to use it as a card reader or USB interface. Just go to the USB tab in the menu and select which device you want.
Thanks for a great review. The only thing that might have helped a little would have been some discussion about audio format and set up. Thanks for your great work.
Can anyone illuminate me as to why your want to use a separate mic like the Rode he plugs in around the middle of the video? Thanks! (Since the zoom already has mics)
help me with two problems with my H5: 1. I’m using a Shure m58 with standard cable to input 1/2 and Audio-Technica headphones connected to the phone-jack (upper lefthand side of the H5). I have to set the input-volume dials for 1/2 to nearly 7 just to hear myself through the headphones and I hear an annoying “hiss”. Why can’t the unit be more sensitive and I be able to hear from 1-6???? I thought for sure that it would be a beautiful sound that I could hear, crisp and without hiss and at a lower input-volume setting (1-6)? Am I connecting incorrectly? Please help me!
Quick question about the scroll real if anybody can answer this. I have been looking into using the zoom H5 as a temporary/portable solution for getting into voiceover work. The issue that I face with a lot of portable recording devices, however, is that I have a visual impairment so sometimes all of these menus can be rather in accessible to me. My question is as you turn the scroll wheel does it click as you move through each option? And I’m not talking about an auditory click because I know it doesn’t do that. I’m talking about a tactile sensation. Also if you were to just spin the wheel a bunch of times to get directly to the top or the bottom of the menu does it stop at the ends of the menu or does it continue cycling through the menu backwards and or forwards over and over again as you continue to spin the wheel. I hope these questions make sense. Please let me know if I can provide any clarification. My thinking is that if the scroll wheel does have some kind of tactile clicking sensation I can memorize how many clicks it takes to get to the various menu options so that I can actually use the device in the ways discussed in this video. Thank you so much.
..and one more question...Can you record in Stereo with the XLR mics? I am sometimes asked by an agent to send them an mp3 file rather than a wav. Since you can't record an mp3 in multi mode, is it safe to recored an mp3 in stereo with an XLR mic? I have a CAD E 100S. Thanks, agian.
when i uploaded my video onto youtube, the audio is fine on 2 speaker phones and laptops but, people with only one speaker on they're phone dont get any audio. Does anyone know what may be the problem?
Hi Friend, I cannot record with an external mike I got an TAKSTAR an XLR with 3.5 mil female to the mike when I press 1 the 2 also is on I follow you but not luck any IDEA? thanks
please help with me with this floor- hiss...and with good equipment: I have the Zoom H5 + Shure m58s and standard XLR cable patches for mic A and mic B. And just that setup has such a loud floor-hiss....why???? I thought the background would be very quiet, but it sounds like someone's frying chicken in the room next to me!! HELP. What settings will minimize this hiss?
Great video. Which jack on the side (line out or headphones) do I use if I want to listen to the play back of any of the recorded material? Either I have horrible headphones, or I need a therapist.
Thank you for your video! I have a question, I am trying to connect a lavalier mic to the ZoomH5 and I don't get it :( I have a smartLav+ and I bought the SC3 adaptor but still I can't record, would you please give me any advice? thank you and have a nice day!!
If using 4 microphones along with 4 quality headsets what splitter do you recommend for the headsets? In order words, will sound be affected depending on splitter! Thanks
I just had this same problem. The issue for me was that the SD card wasn’t compatible with the Zoom. You can find a list online of which cards are compatible, so I’d recommend making sure you’re using a card the Zoom recognizes.
Great vid, i can just say that you could mention that wheels 1 and 2 are for external mics loudness control, and since i havent use it before, i concluded that myself from your tut. (I know, its obvieous, but would be nice to make whole introduction for noobs).
Watching this 48 hours before a film shoot, my first time doing sound/using the zoom h5, thank you so much for this helpful information!
good luck dude
Same here !
Hahah im watching 2h before shoot.. hahaha tryy me my guy

Thanks for the walk through. Sorry I missed the cocktail party going on in the next room.
I haven't used my H5 in months, so I needed a refresher on how to format an SD card, plus I learned some extra things in the process of listening to your tutorial. Much appreciated, thanks!
Brilliant video. I'm watching this in 2024 and it easily explains everything I need to know. Thanks!
I love that a high school how-to vid is teaching all of us how to properly use an H5 :D
Holy Cow did you make this easy. I got a little overwhelmed with the manual. Thanks!!
Being a/not that bright and b/terrified of technology, this is my go-to video everytime I forget the basics. Well done and thanks for your generosity.
Great delivery. No extra fluff, just useful explanations. Thanks
Thanks so much for this super practical guide! It helped me get up and running with my H5.
Thanks for this video! Exactly what I needed. Completely forgot about the mic running on phantom power. Thought it was broken for a minute. Perfect tutorial.
Found this to be very helpful. I couldn't figure out how to access phantom power and with your video I am up and running!! Thanks!
I just got my H5 today! Thanks very much for the video. I've already tested the mic out and the audio blows my mind. I used to use a RODE Go Mic, so the upgrade was totally worth it.

Excellent video, really to the point and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
Thank You again, I just watched your video again to see how you transfer th audio to the laptop. Now is clear to me
Excellent, cristal clear informations with a nice voice speed. No further need for a user manual. Thanks
At :40'ish seconds the volume up/down controls not only the headphone out port but also the internal speaker of the unit.
Thank you so much for taking the time to shoot this helpful video!! :)
Such a clean and helpful video. Right on point, sir!
I congratulate you , You have done a great job.i have managed to understad how 5 works, I wish you the best, thans a lot from from spain
Best explanation I've found. Thanks!
Trying to download the files via the cable is like trying to push a gallon of water through a cocktail straw. The speed is like maple syrup. Especially when you're dealing with Wave files.
Dont worry about using the SD card.
There's no problem with it as long as you turn it off.
Excellent. Answered all my questions. Thank you!
this was incredibly helpful!!! thank you so much!
wow- thank you. You are a great teacher.
You DO ROCK Mr. Watson! Thanks so much!
Such a simple, short and useful video! Thank you very much.
Ready to do some recordings here on Mt. Shasta I just saw your vid and it helped me set up my Zoom really quick, thanks!
Any instructions on how to delete the recorded files? I have not been able to find that.
Thanks for the tutorial :) helped me to test the device
i would have wanted to know more about the specific details for use
Hello... can you tell me what's the name of the extenal microphone he plugged in?
Thanks. Always a good video.

What is the difference between the sd card reader and audio interface?
Hi,
Thank you for this. Very helpful. However, on my new Zoom H5, both the 1 and 2 lights come on simultaneously, instead of one at a time, as in your video. Would you know why?
Thanks.
Nice and easy explanation...
Thanks much for the video, Mr. Watson. Great basics video to get me started.

Lost my instruction manual. Thanks for the vid!

How do you feel about him saying don't remove the SD card due to stress ?
KK
thank you so much! this was super helpful!

Can anyone illuminate me as to why your want to use a separate mic like the Rode he plugs in around the middle of the video? Thanks!
(Since the zoom already has mics)
if you're a filmmaker you can ad a lavalier mic to your recorder or you could plug a shotgun mic so you can make a documentary
Hello, Can lavalier microphone with 3.5mm jack be connected to Zoom h5? Thanks
I put in my sd card
But it says there is none
Do you know a possible reason why this is?
My god...you saved my life..!!! Thanks for the great explanation ❤️
can you use both mics and the onboard mics at the same time?

Sound advice,thanks.

Nice tutorial - was unaware of the usb port! Thanks
Just curious about your caution with the SD slot… are they prone to breakage?
Thank you. 🙏🏾 🎉

Mickey Mouse I would trouble shoot the cord.
right now I can't switch the d**mn thing off, despite sliding right and holding down the button in question. What have I done to get things stuck?
Great video. Which jack on the side (line out or headphones) do I use if I want to listen to the play back of any of the recorded material? Either I have horrible headphones, or I need a therapist.
This tutorial rules thank you so much. I'm so excited for my new recorder.
Man. This shows you the benefits of having an actual teacher showing you something. Keep on Rocking Mr Watson; it ain't elementary ;-)
Hi, does this have a backup file and does it work with phantom power xlr? Thanks.
can zoom h5 do MTR mode like zoom h4n?
It offers the "Mono Mix on/off" mode, correct?

Very helpful, thank you!

Wow this was really handy (hehe) but for real, great information!
Hi.
Is there any way to use external microphone with the 6.3 mm jack?
Excellent video sir. Is there a part 2?
I have been using zoom H5 Recorder for some time, but it has start producing hiss sound .
I tried to format the SD card right out of the box, it came with it, and it says ERROR! any thoughts?
What size is your card? Had the same issue with a 128gb card and then realized it can only handle up 32gb.
SO clear and informative!
Fantastic! Thanks man!
Thank you for your video! I have a question, I am trying to connect a lavalier mic to the ZoomH5 and I don't get it :( I have a smartLav+ and I bought the SC3 adaptor but still I can't record, would you please give me any advice? thank you and have a nice day!!
Does it have any built in sound effects? Like say talking through a phone?
Super helpful, thank you
How strong is the zoom
Excellent video. Thank you.
Cool how is the sound
is it better than the
H6
If using 4 microphones along with 4 quality headsets what splitter do you recommend for the headsets? In order words, will sound be affected depending on splitter! Thanks
Hi I'm having trouble with getting a new sd card to work, it keeps saying no sd card ! any ideas ? many thanks
I just had this same problem. The issue for me was that the SD card wasn’t compatible with the Zoom. You can find a list online of which cards are compatible, so I’d recommend making sure you’re using a card the Zoom recognizes.
Can you overdub using the internal mics?
PABLO A I'm wondering the same thing. Doesn't seem like you can.
