@@IdiotBoxProductionsTV Two back-to-back wars against Germany caused a lot of anti-German sentiment in the US. Many German Americans were accused of dual loyalties so they felt pressured to integrate into mainstream society. There's a German town a couple hours from where I live, in the early 20th century most people there spoke German but now it's just a Bavarian village themed tourist trap. I think that's pretty symbolic of the modern German American community.

@@hippyjoe Then it was also meant to mock the Germans but they picked it up and (proudly?) used it as *their* fighting song. General Sigel might have bee quite popular then, but he isn't the main reason they picked it up. Many Germans in the USA in those days really spoke like this!
And most 48ers have been really anti slavery and that's why the Confederacy had only very few German immigrant soldiers, and most of those they had they had to force to conscript! Many refused, and that's why people should learn about the *"Treue der Union" Memorial* : ua-cam.com/video/uXrvrmzvzf4/v-deo.html

Rather unsurprisingly much like the Irish there were regiments and other size units made up of entirely German immigrants. They actually took part in a lot of important battles and were lauded for their bravery and tenacity. I am pretty sure one brigade of German rivaled the Irish bridage in men lost in battle.

I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill,
    And over the moorland valley,
Such heavy thoughts my heart do fill,
    Since parting from my Sally.
I seek no more the fine and gay,
For each just does remind me
How swift the hours I passed away,
With the girl I left behind me.
    O ne'er shall I forget that night,
The stars were bright above me,
And gently lent their silvery light
When first she vowed to love me.
But now I'm in a prison camp -
Kind Jesus in Heaven find me
And send me safely back again,
To the girl I left behind me.
