Tuba vs Contrabass Trombone - Gabriel's Oboe

- In this video I compare the Bb Tuba (Besson Sovereign BE994) with a Contrabass Trombone. I play a few scales, an excerpt from Gabriel's Oboe, and then empty my slide. How thrilling.

RIP Contrabass Trombone. You will be missed.

Even the tuba is gone .. Together with the trombone ... We will miss them both .. Rest in peace

You could make a brass band made entirely of trombones and it could cover the playing ranges of all of the instruments you would normally have in a band
The Moravian Church's traditional music makes use of trombone choirs, which I understand range from bass to soprano.
You could apply that to literally any instrument family if you include all the members of the family
I never knew that you could play the contra bass trombone with a tuba mouthpiece that's so good! Now I can play it in jazz band.
My 79 Holton Double Trigger Bass Trombone used the very smallest of Tuba Mouthpieces (Eb)
Nice to see videos like these. I'm a composer and I am curious about how certain instruments like the contrabass trombone sound on their own. It reminds me of the time I attended a live performance of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder in the 1970's and the sight of the brass section alone was stunning. 10 horns (4 doubling on Wagner tubas), 6 trumpets, bass trumpet, alto trombone, 4 tenor-bass trombones, bass trombone, contrabass trombone, contrabass tuba. And the chord at the end of Part I -- wow what a sound.
I am 12 yo and i am also a composer
+ i play piano, drums and a flugelhorn and I have the perfect pitch talent

You playing the contrabass hurts my throat, as it makes me feel as if I was going an octave too low on my baritone
i can play an octave lower on euphonium with ease
Cory Hatcher yaaaaaaaas euphs and baris unite!
Really? It made me feel as if I was playing an octave to high on my baritone
Low Brass Class, UNITE!!!
I'm just chillin here with my trumpet
I much prefer the tuba, but I think in particular pieces the contrabass trombone would be better. The tuba can make a really clean, soft, rich sound, but can also be a fun instrument, like in a polka. The trombone however seems to make a less clean sound, sort of in between a tuba and a contrabass bassoon. Therefore I think in certain pieces that could be very very cool. Nevertheless, they both are beautiful instruments; gotta love contrabass...
I think in the low register the tuba sounds a bit more dirtier
*contrabassoon not contra bass bassoon
This was five years ago lol give some credit to a random 15 year old kid@@The_Samurai_Emperor
I love those low notes, they really give a warm feeling!!
His tuba vibrato is very very satisfying coming from a tuba player
finaly you hold both instruments safely
it's an old video
EchoSpark 267 yes
The trombone is a little farty - the small bore probably does it.
LOL!!!!! FARTS!
This is just immature, do you even play in a band?
All brass sound like a bunch of farts, honestly. But then, that's really all that's happening anyway.
Jackalsnipahz vonvonseven immature but true
In the hands of a pro, it's a lot more heroic and pointy.
i'm a saxophonist and this looks so hard
I'm also a saxophonist, and I agree with you
high five saxophonists club!
Woo hoo!!! Saxophones!!!!
I dont belong here I play the clarinet
As a trombonist I find your instrument hard
I thought you did a masterful job of playing that piece on those two monstrous instruments -
You have a most amazing and versatile embouchure playing the entire range of brass instruments as nicely as you do. Thanks for all your informative and enjoyable videos. Keep up the great work!
I played Bb tuba once and was wowed with its majesty
The quality of the videos are skyrocketing! Fantastic job!
On mobile the low sounds get lost. (Without headphones that is) then the warmth of the tuba wins big time over the farty sound of the trombone.
I think in order for the tuba to really excel, you need to play fnugg.
Or you just use some god damn headphones
Fnugg is frikin incredible
?
Willem Kossen it really has more to do with the experience of the player I have heard tubas that sounds like bass trombones trombones that sound like tubas. It’s really all about the ability of the player above all and Trent was clearly more talented with the tuba in this case
the tube was more of a constant sound, the trombone's sound was like it was pulsing kinda. I play the basic starter trombone and its flute's higher then that Contrabass trombone.
Completely aside from sound issues, that tuba is a gorgeous instrument. I'd like to have one if it was just to look at. Makes me want to clean up that old Eb tuba in my garage.
I like the tone of the tuba a lot better, but all instruments serve their own purpose in the orchestra.
That tuba is beautiful.
It's rare to see a silver plated one these days, because lacquered is a) cheaper and b) many people think they sound better. I don't agree, the lacquered ones are too bright sounding for my taste.
Sovereign instruments are beautiful, sound n appearance. Much as I love my 4 year old Chinese made Wessex bass bone my 30 years old Sovereign tenor is still a toy of beauty!
Gabriel' oboe was played down the octave right? Either way, great playing.
Drops Tuba at end * XD
I'd be in serious trouble if I dropped a $20k tuba.
those compensating tubas suck to hold... so heavy
talk about drop the bass
Nah, you'll be all good, tuba are a special breed of players. unless you are my music teacher you can play every single brass instrument known to man. And can you answe this plz. My Question.
What is the big big instrument that you see in marching band the the players is in the middle of the instrument, the one with the massive bell. i forget what its called.
Nermind its a sousaphone. Can you play a suosaphone?
Mr. Hamilton, may I ask where you got that excerpt? I can't seem to find a proper bass clef part for it.
+trenthamilton what website did you get the contrabass trombone from
come on, I can hit that most of those notes on tuba, in the octave!
jk, that sounded beautiful and I know you would curb-stomp me in any brass battle.
What software do you use for multi-tracking?
Trent: I'm not good at this
Me: well this is going to sound like a fart
Trent: plays well
Me: 😱
Dose he take these both down the octave it kinda sounds like it?
Have you ever had an E flat tuba? Does it sound like a euphonium or tuba? I'm a brass instrument player and wonder how you can keep a good lip on a trumpet and trombone.
Yes - check out some of my other videos.
just listening to this is making me lightheaded.
I have a tuba for marching band where it's a concert tuba but if u change the main slide and put in a marching attachment it becomes a contra-like marching tuba but I don't know what to call it. any knowledge?
That's a Convertible Tuba :)
What is your first instrument or the one you feel plays the easiest for you
Please tell me how you got those hight tuba notes out I am having trouble with a high Bb right above the staff
Jjenniferjade I know I'm a year late but long tones and slowly make your way up
When I saw those notes I refused to believe that a tuba could go that high
Trent where would a bass trombone be in range and notes compared to a tuba?
Hello Trent! Could you make in the future a Contrabass trombone - Cimbasso comparsion? It could be interesting to hear the difference between the wagnerian and the verdian low-brass instrument!
I love The Mission soundtrack - so glad to see Gabriel's Oboe being played!
I must say your tone quality on the tuba is still quite nice. I recall you saying you prefer the Eb bass over the Bb but I don't think I can recall what you're main instrument is. What do you normally play in a brass band or whatever ensemble you would happen to play in?
Currently I conduct a brass band, but my main instruments are trombone (preferably bass trombone) and euphonium.
What in the world were you doing playing solo cornet, then, Trent? ;)
Before I started conducting I was playing solo cornet. Before that I was playing Eupho
isnt euph amazing
Trent Hamilton You mean euphomum?
Were the lower notes on the contrabass trombone sharp because the slide doesn't compensate
I think, on the low C scale at least, he didn't support the lowest note going down. He was probably about to pass out, notes that low suck.
I think it was because it was a Chinese made trombone that doesn't have that much care put into making it
With the F attachment engaged each position has to be pulled out a little further (besides first position) in order to stay in tune. That tuba has a compensating valve system so it does it for him but since he didn't compensate himself with the trombone the notes were sharp.
Which tuba do you like , tuba , or sousaphone tuba
That's an interesting valve placement on that particular tuba! The ones I've seen have a valves usually on the side and not on top like that
Their right-handed. Valves on the side are for left-handed players. Both variations are common, so I'm surprised you haven't encountered one before.
@@mrpickle6290 yea no..? Both are for right handed players
you play Nice i have one question as usual is the Bb Tuba the same as the susaphone or what is the difference exsept for the design
It has a different sound and a bit different embouchure, but other than that fingerings are the same.
Trumpet or cornet for jazz?
Do you use the same mouthpiece for both instruments?
I want to see you try the Yamaha YBB-102 tuba because it is designed differently from common tubas.
So this may be a really dumb question but is a tenor trombone mouthpiece the same size as a regular bass trombone mouthpiece?
That_one_guy602 For a good tone, you generally use a larger mouthpiece. The bass one is not nearly as large as a tuba mouthpiece, but it's larger nonetheless.
Tuba for life
Where can I get a contrabass trombone?
IT HAS RETURNED!!
Will you ever get another contrabass trombone
Hey Trent I know that you have reviewed the tromba plastic trombone but I was wonder if you could review the tiger plastic trombone? This plastic trombone is a large bore w/f attachment
I'd like to get it at some point to review.
Can the tube play like really high
Bravo, Trent Hamilton. I was looking for confirmation that tuba and contrabass trombone (and cimbasso) have the same range, and you confirmed it. All lovers of super deep brass thunder should listen to "The Rains of Castamere". It's on Utube. Features over 40 top rate professionals from NYC: trombones, bass trombones, contrabass trombones, and tubas. It took five years to assemble the group for the recording, which may have only been possible in NY. OMG!
4:13,
was this part filmed after the drop?
Not gonna lie that is the most beautiful tuba sound I’ve ever heard!
I thought you did really well on the Bb bass Tuba more than the Trombone to be honest. I haven't tried to blow a Bb but I play an Eb Tuba and I am a grade 5. Apparently it's more difficult to play the Bb than Eb?
please where do I get the trombone
Your trombone is still alive
Bro, which is more bass, trombone or tuba or Sauphone? 🤔
What is your favourite intrement to play
why were you filming this at wellington south?
One of my favorite videos even 8 years later
I"d say your pretty good playing that song with the tuba. you were making my kenwood subwoofer vibrate what ever was on top.
I must say, I didn't realize a tuba could play a G above the staff
A good player will have four to six octaves.
You should see the cadenza of the Vaughan Williams Concerto prelude, I'm having serious trouble getting the Ab above the staff that most players elect to play XD
irishfox94 when i was in high school playing tuba my band director handed me a trombone 1 sheet music and i was like how do i play a ledger line g above the staff and he said just try your best. ohh so many wierd noises came out that day. at least i could play it
It’s possible to play it just takes time to learn how to. And it sounds like he did it an octave down. But the g is totally in range of a good player.
No matter what brass instrument you can play really high for the deep brass it’s weird sounding though and difficult
I like the BBb subcontrabass trombone because of how it sounds.
I wonder what happens next...
do you puff your cheeks to get lower notes or.......?
No
How do I get a contrabass trombone if I want one (I do want one)
china
When did he drop it?
Gabriel's oboe sounds so much better from the tuba the tuba sounds so beautiful playing high notes
Didn't your contrabass/subcontrabass trombone (BBb) die in the previous video?
Can you make a video showing us a plastic tuba?
Is that a BBb tuba or just small Bb tuba
How much money you spend on those?
Is that a 4/4 tuba or 5/4?
I don't have that 4th button on my Bb tuba, so I can't play those super low notes 😖
Little did he know. The wild Contrabass trombone would leap away......
Can you play the piccolo trombone on helium?
I wonder if it is possible to play that tube holding it upside town. It would like trying play the double-bass with it tucked under your chin.
Is that tuba backwards? I thought they faced the other way?
Was the right side up tuba woth it
Worth
Was the high G at 2:44 supposed to be played 1 & 2?
It sounded like an alternate fingering
High G is indeed played 1-2. He's just not as skilled in Tuba than in other brass
+Luis Cobos Oh I gotcha thx man
Second valve is very flat
What would you consider your actual main instrument?
Molten 332 He seems to play bass trombone the most on this channel, but he also has a video of himself playing solo euphonium for a concert of sorts
Who else watching after the trombone's revival
That tuba looks substantially larger than the instrument called a tuba here in America. Is America using the wrong name for it like how everyone here calls euphs baris? I'm very curious.
There is a variety of shapes and sizes when it comes to tubas. The instrument he has there is a 4/4 (full size) compensating BBb tuba. Depending on the band environment you play in you may be more familiar with EEb tubas, or if you're a school student maybe even 3/4 or 1/2 size tubas.
Incase it's just a perception thing, that tuba is pretty close in size to the marching tubas/contrabass bugles used in DCI (a very American type of band)
+TheWorstThrowEver Thank you. I don't know very much about tubas. This really helps.
+Blink to the Future the Tuba he has is a 4/4 concert. I played on one similar here in Maryland US. But we also had a 3/4 for lesser experienced.
I have a quick and unrelated question for you. Could you review Bob McChesney's music book, Technical Studies for Trombone. It seems to be a decent book. I'd like your opinion on it. Thanks!
I don't have a copy unfortunately. Do you have a link?

I hate to bother you. But, have you decided whether to review Bob McChesney's book, Technical Studies for Trombone? I think you'd do a good job at reviewing his book.
Thanks!
I was dieing with laughter when "A comparison between this the Bb Contrabass Trombone- AAAUURRHHHHH and this the upside down Bb Tuba
Still want to see the reed trombone - and trumpet - with various mutes, especially harmon with stem...
Also both names derived from the word trumpet. Tuba is latin for trumpet, and Trombone literally means "large trumpet" in Italian.
You should do a video on a comparison between a sousaphone and a helicon!
sounds very beautiful on both instruments ! also bass clef SLAYYYY

I may be a student with a trombone but always hold it with the slide closed and holding it firmly with both slide braces
Who from twoset?
I play tuba and that was amazing, and I definitely want to play that song
This tuba is not Euphonium?
what do you do for a living? Do you play professionally?
I work in IT as a solutions architect.
that's pretty cool. super sick you have your music still
Is that tuba a compensating instrument? It must cost a small fortune.
