you are so on with this .. LISTENING TO THE GREATS OF THE PAST .. My best ever lessons . i tell every kid wanting to learn how to play jazz .. LISTEN . I consider listening part of my daily practice ...
I'm 83 yrs old .. playing since i was 10 yrs old and wish i had these weapons like a computer and all those fabulous Abersold books with CD backgrounds .. When I started out i played with a lousy box phonagraph using steel needles that destroyed the 78 s i tried imitating the old pros ..
Kids today have lots of money and can afford a computer and listen intently producing the good sound and then play those long tones. good luck guys ....you have a better teacher on U TUBE than had in studios..

Hey Jay! I've been checking out your material on u-tube, I am in awe to the amount of cool stuff you present here. When I was learning to play in the late 60's, 70's, quite different, you are doing an excellent job here with this format. I will be following your new additions...this is good stuff man, thank you!

You off got easy Jay! Back in the late 70's, early 80's, I went through several of the old, easily-broken, wooden mechanical metronomes that cost about $75 and never traveled very well. I think I had to buy a new one maybe two, sometimes three times a year. In 1983, I bought a very good Boss tuner for $130 that lasted for fifteen years. (That was money well-spent, but neither the mechanical metronome or tuner could compare to the Total Energy app.) I used to transcribe by slowing the recording down to 16 RPM on a record player. (Somebody once asked why I learned a solo in F# when it was actually in F.) I had several feet of fakebooks with tunes that were never called or played. Kids don't know how good they nowadays, with all of these apps and wonderful UA-cam channels like yours. (And I'm glad of that.)

@@joseirivera6521 Not sure I understand the question. The app has a chromatic scale with WWHWWHW or (TTSTTST since you are asking about European)with the ability to tune off of 440. There are also different temperaments that may be what you are looking for. It is not expensive and has many options I have yet to explore. Isn't Do, Re, Mi the same for every key signature? Do is always the root.

Jay, Thanks so much for all of the hard work and many many hours you've put in to provide all of these great little video snippets of tips, tricks, techniques and lessons. Just amazing, and I find everyone of them spot on and very valuable/useful. And I"m an active player of 35 years. Really appreciate all of the experience and wisdom that you are sharing, and you seem like a really down to earth nice guy too. In this particular post, thanks for the tips. A buddy of mine had suggested iReal Pro awhile back but for some reason (forgetfulness or neglect I'm sure) I never followed through. I just did and love it. Ditto on Anytune Pro and Tonal Energy. Great suggestions. One small minor thing: the title of this post is "Top 5 apps..." ... I see 4 in the video.... ;-) is there a 5th? Cheers mate.

Hi Jay? Thanks for this video about metronomes? I went on my app page and found a good metronome that gave me what I was searching for, for $2.99. Then, I happened to see your video on the Tonal Energy, and purchased that one too. So when I’m warming up I can use my first metronome to slow down the tempo. Forcing me to hold the notes longer. Then, using the TE, I can move into my lessons! I’m having fun learning. So thanks for your videos, they’ve helped me immensely!
    Thank you,

I never picked saxophone playing because of a sax player, in fact I don't know any of them and I'm not even capable of naming a particular saxophone music piece. I'm a guitarist fan but I am not into playing guitar. I picked the sax because of the sax itself (tenor to be precise), I like the way it looks and the way it feels when I hold it in my hand and the fact that I could pull something out of it from the very first moment I blew in one albeit some quacks and screeches. I could play a few things better than anyone my age at the time. Now I want to really develop some serious skills and you keep saying I should should listen to sax as much as I pratice, so my question is if I was to start listening to one saxophone player (to begin with) which would you recommend? I am almost to get on lesson 5 of your free (6 lessons) course and plan to get on your pentatonic scale training.

Dhwani Tanpura is great for practissing overtones/altissimo/tuning. The sitar gives you 3 tones: 1-5-8 and you can play any scale above that. I practise everyday with it and it helped a lot against playing out of tune and learning how to play altissimo. This app teaches you the most important thing: How to prehear tones and intervals. Most people get frustrated learning overtones because they play out of tune.

Hi, I purchased the tonal energy for my Samsung tablet and I’m really disappointed. One , the screen won’t change to horizonal from vertical on the metronome or tuner, even though my tablet is set to flip the way the tablet is held and it is working and flips on any other app or webpage. Secondly I cannot change the sounds of the metronome and cannot find a gear/ settings icon on the metronome dedicated page. Its NOT There. This makes it worthless to me with only a default “click”. The android version metronome looks nothing like your video. Everyone raving about how great this app is and I'm upset its not right. Any suggestions wold be appreciated. Thanks.

THIS is what I need!~ I bought a new saxophone and It doesn't sound like it is supposed to. I have a beginner lesson video that says if I press the top key I'll get a B, but It's off. So , when Imm pressing NOTHING I blow a B, and when I press the B key, I get an A sound. I don't know what's wrong and can't figure it out. This Tonal Energy App sounds like what I need to figure out why and how I'm blowing my first note wrong from the get-go. I've never played any brass instrument before and I'm doing this on my own,. It's been super frustrating watching multiple vids of people taking "cheap sax bought from china" out of the case and blowing a perfect note from the start. I think embouchure(sp?) and other stuff has something to do with it too, since there is a guy who plays a sax with No keys just by the way he blows it seems. Anyway, I've only seen the first app and I'm already super appreciative and hopeful. Thanks a Bunch! I'll watch the rest of the vid now....

The best way to play fast and secure, I learned from a famous violinplayer : 1. Start reading the music without the Instrument. 2. Play that slow so you don't make any mistake, but so fast, that you don't make mistakes because you are bored. 3. Repeat that for several days , still without any nuances or frazing. 4. Then slowly put on the right Rhythm SLOWLY I said. 5. When that functioned , pay attention to nuances and frazing. 6. At Last you should now know it by heart and will be able to play it in tempo without any faults. I used this with my students in The royal Akademie in Copenhagen and they all learned fast and secure.

I forgot to say that the first days you must completely disregard the rythme. Just play the notes slowly and enjoy your sound.

I always use a metronome and tuner but the tuner drives me nuts. I stay in tune until I use the octave key and the suddenly everything is sharp.

For transcribing solos just slow down the songs on UA-cam to 75% or 50% speed by clicking the three dots in the top right hand corner

I have recently picked up my sax after not having played for a few decades. I played everyday from the time I was 10 until 20 years old. I recently refurbished my King Cleveland and downloaded the tonal app. There are notes that are easily in tune such as low Bflat, F, C g, and other notes how matter how much I adjust the mouthpiece on the neck, change the embrouchure, etc., the note will note play out of tune and I cannot bring in tune by use of my embrouchure. I also find that from note to note I need to sharpen or flatten the note by mouthpiece position. I assume this is mostly my technique, but how much is it the reed, mouthpiece, horn, etc.?

In the 90's I bought a thing called the Circle of Fifths gadget - a plastic disc with printed scales and keys which revolved to find any key. I lost understanding of it after trying to get it, twenty years later I found it in an old drawer and studied it again, to find it is disorganized bulls**t, so that was $15 wasted, oh but wait, it was still part of my learning so I guess it had it's purpose.

Just in case you haven't checked it out already, I'd recommend "Earmaster" for tablets. I used to use the pc version of it, and it was great and a fun way to learn! I can't imagine the tablet version being worse.

I guess it’s a really good idea practicing with a tuner. But...I’m 56 years old and a tenor player since 35 years. But I’ve been really lazy with these kind of tips. Since 2 years I have now more or less getting used to practice with a metronome and I now find it really good and helpful most of the time. But this TE tuner app is kind of depressing I must say! Way to low on low B and Bb. High on a lot of other notes! Almost impossible to get that big green smile on an ordinary C major scale! Feels like day one when I got my fist horn 35 years ago!😩
