you are so on with this .. LISTENING TO THE GREATS OF THE PAST .. My best ever lessons . i tell every kid wanting to learn how to play jazz .. LISTEN . I consider listening part of my daily practice ...
I'm 83 yrs old .. playing since i was 10 yrs old and wish i had these weapons like a computer and all those fabulous Abersold books with CD backgrounds .. When I started out i played with a lousy box phonagraph using steel needles that destroyed the 78 s i tried imitating the old pros ..
Kids today have lots of money and can afford a computer and listen intently producing the good sound and then play those long tones. good luck guys ....you have a better teacher on U TUBE than had in studios..
He's a great guy for sure.
Getting back into playing the sax after 40 years so I am re learning so much. Love your video's.
I’m here after 12 years
Just bought an alto sax playing again after 30 yrs
Hey Jay! I've been checking out your material on u-tube, I am in awe to the amount of cool stuff you present here. When I was learning to play in the late 60's, 70's, quite different, you are doing an excellent job here with this format. I will be following your new additions...this is good stuff man, thank you!
You off got easy Jay! Back in the late 70's, early 80's, I went through several of the old, easily-broken, wooden mechanical metronomes that cost about $75 and never traveled very well. I think I had to buy a new one maybe two, sometimes three times a year. In 1983, I bought a very good Boss tuner for $130 that lasted for fifteen years. (That was money well-spent, but neither the mechanical metronome or tuner could compare to the Total Energy app.) I used to transcribe by slowing the recording down to 16 RPM on a record player. (Somebody once asked why I learned a solo in F# when it was actually in F.) I had several feet of fakebooks with tunes that were never called or played. Kids don't know how good they nowadays, with all of these apps and wonderful UA-cam channels like yours. (And I'm glad of that.)
I’ve been play for a while now maybe 6 years but i’ve been playing mediocre for a while now and you are really helping me get to the next level... God bless you sir!
"Big chunky books that weighted a FFFFFUUUuuu-several pounds each" Hahahaa
I loved it lol
I really enjoy the Tonal Energy App. I'm in my late 60's and find that silly smiley face surprisingly motivating :-)
Gary, does this app let you use the european scale systesm? Do, Re, Mi, etc.
@@joseirivera6521 Not sure I understand the question. The app has a chromatic scale with WWHWWHW or (TTSTTST since you are asking about European)with the ability to tune off of 440. There are also different temperaments that may be what you are looking for. It is not expensive and has many options I have yet to explore. Isn't Do, Re, Mi the same for every key signature? Do is always the root.
@@joseirivera6521 Yes it does. It's in the settings.
Gotta say I really appreciate that you list your talking points in the description. A great time saver when you return to get the details. Cheers!
Well done Mr. J
Yet another good production - calmly narrated, well orchestrated .
You deserve to be paid for your advice.
Thanks. I get paid in UA-cam comments...
Fantastic video! Keep it up!
Getting back into playing tenor after 22 years of raising kids. Was looking for a tuner app and I knew you'd have something for me, Jay! Thanks!
Thanks for the heads up, The Tonal Energy app is really great and invaluable especially for a total beginner like myself
Dearest Jay ✌🏿🙏🎶 love your site! So full of the important stuff ! very
Informative indeed!! Played 🎷 years ago!! Now I’m just happy to play my Alto Vernova from Yamaha !!
(All I can afford! ) But I love it 🎷👍
Love All the infos about mouth pieces and Reeds ❤️ I bought my venova after watching you play it 💪😊
I play in a Duo formation and we use
A looper! Guitar, keys, and venova is
The Ideal tool for More variety in
My music!!!
Bless you Jay 🙏✌🏿👍🎷
You just taught me how to use tonal pro, and I’ve been using it everyday without any of the special features!
Jay, I’m really enjoying going through your videos. I am diving headfirst into learning the tenor saxophone and was looking for listening suggestions. Do you have a video covering different styles, musicians, or composers?
No but I have a few playlists I created on UA-cam with a suggestions. Check my channel page.
Thank you so much for your videos! I just started in January and I was recommended TE from my teacher, but I never figured out how to use it 😅
Your reviews are always great. I was just about to buy a combined metronome/tuner for 5x the price of the Tonal Energy app. Keep doing what you do! :-)
Excellent vid, I use iReal pro with my students most days - saves about $2k worth of play along C.D’s ! Free tuning apps and metronomes are still pretty good, Anytune is really useful when students have to play transcriptions for their exams 90% speed work well without too much distortion. Subscribed !
Thanks for your comment and the subscribe.
I really appreciate the insight. Thanks for taking the time to share this wisdom!
Trying to import tuned from Spotify to iPhone to use the Anytime app. Is that possible?
Hey, Jay! Just started playing saxophone. Bought Tonal Energy tuner by your recomendation and it has been invaluable during my practice so far. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Jay, Thanks so much for all of the hard work and many many hours you've put in to provide all of these great little video snippets of tips, tricks, techniques and lessons. Just amazing, and I find everyone of them spot on and very valuable/useful. And I"m an active player of 35 years. Really appreciate all of the experience and wisdom that you are sharing, and you seem like a really down to earth nice guy too. In this particular post, thanks for the tips. A buddy of mine had suggested iReal Pro awhile back but for some reason (forgetfulness or neglect I'm sure) I never followed through. I just did and love it. Ditto on Anytune Pro and Tonal Energy. Great suggestions. One small minor thing: the title of this post is "Top 5 apps..." ... I see 4 in the video.... ;-) is there a 5th? Cheers mate.
Thanks Jay, very useful.... As a beginner, I'm really appreciating how you make things understandable.
Two of your recommendations I have just installed on my iPad. Thank you!
Good job and very useful . Thanks a lot Jay!
You're very welcome!
Thanks. Bought a couple of these. i have trouble hearing the metronome over my alto, so got a Peterson Pulse attachment.
Thanks for the info. Well presented too. Will check out Tonal Energy and Anytime Pro.
Thank you for this wonderful video. For a brand new neophyte player such as myself, still trying to figure out heads from tails on the instrument, this is invaluable information.
Interesting the tune checker.
Hi Jay? Thanks for this video about metronomes? I went on my app page and found a good metronome that gave me what I was searching for, for $2.99. Then, I happened to see your video on the Tonal Energy, and purchased that one too. So when I’m warming up I can use my first metronome to slow down the tempo. Forcing me to hold the notes longer. Then, using the TE, I can move into my lessons! I’m having fun learning. So thanks for your videos, they’ve helped me immensely!
Thank you,
Donnie
I never picked saxophone playing because of a sax player, in fact I don't know any of them and I'm not even capable of naming a particular saxophone music piece. I'm a guitarist fan but I am not into playing guitar. I picked the sax because of the sax itself (tenor to be precise), I like the way it looks and the way it feels when I hold it in my hand and the fact that I could pull something out of it from the very first moment I blew in one albeit some quacks and screeches. I could play a few things better than anyone my age at the time. Now I want to really develop some serious skills and you keep saying I should should listen to sax as much as I pratice, so my question is if I was to start listening to one saxophone player (to begin with) which would you recommend? I am almost to get on lesson 5 of your free (6 lessons) course and plan to get on your pentatonic scale training.
thanks -just took ypur advice and bought the Tuner/metronome
The Tonal Energy app is a game changer, especially the recording analytics feature, and it lets you set daily practice goals.
I concur, It's a bliss and a blast
Just listened to Eric Alexander (Embracable You) as you suggested on your pentatonic lick video. He is indeed a very fine player and it sounds like Dexter Gordon has been a major influence in his musical development.
Glad you discovered Eric's playing. I can listen to him all day.
Wow, man what great information to help develop my playing.. Thank you
Thanks Alexander!
5:35 - I thought you were going to say a "fricking ton" :D Well done for keeping it clean! :D
Many thanks, Anytune is great for practising.
Great tips. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
I use Soundcorset and tuner, it’s free and it does a lot of the same things if you don’t have much money I recommend it
Dhwani Tanpura is great for practissing overtones/altissimo/tuning. The sitar gives you 3 tones: 1-5-8 and you can play any scale above that. I practise everyday with it and it helped a lot against playing out of tune and learning how to play altissimo. This app teaches you the most important thing: How to prehear tones and intervals. Most people get frustrated learning overtones because they play out of tune.
Anytune Pro is the best investment in a piece of software I've ever made. I usually sit down with a new tune and listen to it multiple times, marking it out into sections to later practice.
Tonal energy is great, thanks!
Nice video thank u soo much!! Who was this little girl at your mobile phone background ? :)
That's my daughter...
Thanks!! Please another video with best 5 free Apps for Beginners like me! For example Scales or some else
Hey Jay. awsome video. Some apps are not on android. i dont suppose you have a recommended metronome /tuner app for android?
Abi, the Tonal Energy app is in the google store and appears to cost less there as well.
The Anytune Transposing app is not available yet for Android, but they say it is coming.
Even Apple Music is available on in the google play store.
Thanks for getting in touch.
Hi, I purchased the tonal energy for my Samsung tablet and I’m really disappointed. One , the screen won’t change to horizonal from vertical on the metronome or tuner, even though my tablet is set to flip the way the tablet is held and it is working and flips on any other app or webpage. Secondly I cannot change the sounds of the metronome and cannot find a gear/ settings icon on the metronome dedicated page. Its NOT There. This makes it worthless to me with only a default “click”. The android version metronome looks nothing like your video. Everyone raving about how great this app is and I'm upset its not right. Any suggestions wold be appreciated. Thanks.
pro metronome, best metronome out there. by far.
Nice work man.
I used to run off literally hundreds of photo copies for my guys, cos yeah those books weighed a #ucking tonne.
Can't fault this advice. Take it to heart.
Great tips!
i actually play alto sax, and those tips were really helpful, even at the age of 10
Dexter Gordon, ohhh yeahhhh :)
Thanks for the great tips! ...said this trumpet/trombone player / new subscriber...will be considering how I can utilize this info with my vocal students as well.
Cool thanks Scott. These apps are for any instrument actually
Many thanks for the content on this channel! What do you recommend for soundproofing an apartment room/space?
sound proofing is expensive. You need to double the walls, floor, windows, doors and ceiling with space between the layers.
@@bettersax Cool. Thanks
Thx!
can u please tell me a good inexpensive tenor sax,
Great tips! Just got the Real book app.
it's a must have...
Thanks for this Vid Sir.
Sound corset works pretty good
On the Anytune Pro app require you to own the song you want to transcribe first? I technically don't own any music, I have a Apple Music Subscription and in the past in different apps they require you to own the song.
I use the Tonal Energy app every time I practice, it's really useful.
can you maybs make a video on how to tune with your ear. for all saxes
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I'm planning a video on how to practice intonation and use a tuner to improve your ear for pitch.
So cute and handsome! And great video! Informative.
Great! Thank you
Thanks for the practicing concepts
Edison...
Gracias. sí, fui yo
Any app changes for 2019?
Got Tonal Energy, wow do I have a lot of practice to do.
when you transcribe solos how do you remember the notes and rhythms.do you write them down or memorize the notes and rhythms?
+trevinia turner I do both, at least for long and more complex solos. I only write it down after I've memorized the solo though. Writing a solo down does not help me remember it or play it though and is only done for later reference. Using an app like Anytune pro will help you learn solos. Repetition is the key. Play it a lot!
Can you explain plz How do you get the recording to play on Anytune pro ? I have iTunes trying to avoid paying for each song
Hi Very good tipz!
As you say, lessen to music on your instruments.
Nowdays I lessen to music in my genre, trumpet, saxes, cr harmonicas, they are all in You Tube, no need for cds! I can lessen to you playing alto, very nice playing!
I lessen to C Bakers uge reportoar, good for my trumpet play etc!
Thanks, Johnny D Bergh// mult instr amateur music man
THIS is what I need!~ I bought a new saxophone and It doesn't sound like it is supposed to. I have a beginner lesson video that says if I press the top key I'll get a B, but It's off. So , when Imm pressing NOTHING I blow a B, and when I press the B key, I get an A sound. I don't know what's wrong and can't figure it out. This Tonal Energy App sounds like what I need to figure out why and how I'm blowing my first note wrong from the get-go. I've never played any brass instrument before and I'm doing this on my own,. It's been super frustrating watching multiple vids of people taking "cheap sax bought from china" out of the case and blowing a perfect note from the start. I think embouchure(sp?) and other stuff has something to do with it too, since there is a guy who plays a sax with No keys just by the way he blows it seems. Anyway, I've only seen the first app and I'm already super appreciative and hopeful. Thanks a Bunch! I'll watch the rest of the vid now....
you need to transpose for your instrument. Sounds like you have a tenor or soprano saxophone. Watch my video on how to transpose
mate, offer your followers to record themself and listen back some of the practice (all the sheet is coming up) - best way to boost your progress.
Cool !!!!
Well done! Good info! Thanks, Joe
Hey Jay, I had just purchased my very first sax off of eBay, I purchased a Selmer AS600 Alto sax and my question is, is there supposed to be a lot of movement in the neck piece even after tightening the screw for the neck. Thanks Keith
Hi, Jay, I'm beginning sax player from Russia, would you so kind as slow down while speaking, because I can't quite catch up what you speak
You can set the playback speed to .75 on UA-cam if that helps.
< ! Amazing synchronicity...eXactly what I was thinkin of !¡ Well, I´ve got the Spotify and iRealPro. Let´s see what I can feed my android . >
What neckstrap is that, it looks pretty nice
About the first app, can you turn the notes into european notes?
The best way to play fast and secure, I learned from a famous violinplayer : 1. Start reading the music without the Instrument. 2. Play that slow so you don't make any mistake, but so fast, that you don't make mistakes because you are bored. 3. Repeat that for several days , still without any nuances or frazing. 4. Then slowly put on the right Rhythm SLOWLY I said. 5. When that functioned , pay attention to nuances and frazing. 6. At Last you should now know it by heart and will be able to play it in tempo without any faults. I used this with my students in The royal Akademie in Copenhagen and they all learned fast and secure.
I forgot to say that the first days you must completely disregard the rythme. Just play the notes slowly and enjoy your sound.
I always use a metronome and tuner but the tuner drives me nuts. I stay in tune until I use the octave key and the suddenly everything is sharp.
Back in the day... lol my friends and I have probably 10 pooled together and I own 2 lol
Are you using Tenor Sax or Alto Sax?
love the total energy App wow
can you tell me the tablet used in the video ? raleighdoby@yahoo.com
its pro
b an ipad or something apple related
For transcribing solos just slow down the songs on UA-cam to 75% or 50% speed by clicking the three dots in the top right hand corner
This is s great video
OK.... 👍👍👍 I like Everything presented, I
wish more, but we opportunity Perhaps in the near future.....
I have recently picked up my sax after not having played for a few decades. I played everyday from the time I was 10 until 20 years old. I recently refurbished my King Cleveland and downloaded the tonal app. There are notes that are easily in tune such as low Bflat, F, C g, and other notes how matter how much I adjust the mouthpiece on the neck, change the embrouchure, etc., the note will note play out of tune and I cannot bring in tune by use of my embrouchure. I also find that from note to note I need to sharpen or flatten the note by mouthpiece position. I assume this is mostly my technique, but how much is it the reed, mouthpiece, horn, etc.?
My favirite app is Smart Music it has tons of songs to play and a metronome and other cool features!
Thanks! 💖
9752791222 call for sax
What model tablet are you using?
Can you use it for acoustic guitar
Great video, but I’m worried about how relevant apps from 5 years ago are today. Does anyone here have newer recommendations?
I made a new version a few months ago
Do you maybe have a playlist of very good songs for sax to listen to. If so can you share it please, because I cant find that much or something I like. Thx
Yes, look on the bettersax channel page, and there are 2 playlists for alto and tenor with suggested listening.
In the 90's I bought a thing called the Circle of Fifths gadget - a plastic disc with printed scales and keys which revolved to find any key. I lost understanding of it after trying to get it, twenty years later I found it in an old drawer and studied it again, to find it is disorganized bulls**t, so that was $15 wasted, oh but wait, it was still part of my learning so I guess it had it's purpose.
The advice to get Spotify is right on. No music lover, no matter what is their bag, should be without one of the great musical inventions....Spotify..... at £5 a month, is all!
I can't live without it. I've switched to Apple music, but Spotify had a better interface I think.
thx for all your hints! Tonal Energy is really a fantastic app 👌👌👌
Any recommendations for music theory apps? Something I can study on the bus ride or otherwise sitting around when I'm not actually practising.
Just in case you haven't checked it out already, I'd recommend "Earmaster" for tablets. I used to use the pc version of it, and it was great and a fun way to learn! I can't imagine the tablet version being worse.
$15 for Anytune Pro is very inexpensive, penny’s, compared to the $400 I spent on my Superscope variable speed CD player 25 yrs ago.
I couldn't find any tune Pro on Google Play. Any suggestions for an equivalent app for smartphones?
Mathew Wallis me either can't find it
Thanks
Ha Jay. In irealpro I have both set to Bb. But it’s not in tune with my horn. Help. Are all songs in the key of Bb?
Thanks. Tom
tom, when you set it to Bb that just transposes it from concert key.
I need to play saxophone and. I like the app
I guess it’s a really good idea practicing with a tuner. But...I’m 56 years old and a tenor player since 35 years. But I’ve been really lazy with these kind of tips. Since 2 years I have now more or less getting used to practice with a metronome and I now find it really good and helpful most of the time. But this TE tuner app is kind of depressing I must say! Way to low on low B and Bb. High on a lot of other notes! Almost impossible to get that big green smile on an ordinary C major scale! Feels like day one when I got my fist horn 35 years ago!😩
