Spoiler: Zain trying to murder someone for his survival fits perfectly to his character. Since his childhood, his survival instinct was high. While it helped him initially, it also helped him justify his questionable actions in adulthood. That’s what happens with unhealed trauma. When you continue to use it to justify your actions, everything seems right in the name of self preservation. Also, he had narcissistic qualities too, which further explains why he did what he did.
Exactly.
Perfectly said..
So nicely explained.
Wow Rupin, you saw what my couldn't see, including myself!
Right, I was expecting a happily ever after ending for the movie. I hoped so, as I fell in love with Zain's character, but not that much trustworthy.
An analogy: As much as I love this video, I would never want my teachers to check my answer sheets right in front of me. Kudos to Shakun. ♥️👏🏻

True that
I connected instantly with Deepikas character Alisha when she said "Trust my fucking luck" at the beginning of the film...i sympthatised with Alishas childhood trauma, anxiety attack, wanting a better life, connecting with someone on a deeper level, having a dysfunctioal relationship with your father, living with your past baggage everywhere you go..there are so many. Deepika had me hooked from start to end. i would watch a whole film based on Alisha Khanna. Deepika should get all the awards this year.
Gangubai is taking all of them
I agree with Renuka and Mayank. They promoted the film in a way where people expected new age romance but it was far from that and when people didn't get what they expected, a section of people hated it.
+ happy endings became a thing … apparently most ppl can’t accept the fact that there’s no happy ending
And also title...made ppl look more depth
You missed something.. Everyone hated it except a few 🙃😉

Masterstroke from Amazon Prime Video - by bringing the makers & critics together & give an insight to the ongoing debate of good vs bad of Gehraiyaan. This is actually going to help the movie more than the pre-release promotional activities. People want the truth & that's what they're getting now. Can't say how much of this is staged but still a good attempt on the clarification front.
it was a trap, money trap for Amazon Prime. To tell them "look it made so much buzz" and get more money from them! hutiya bana rahe hai goro ko aur unka paisa daba lete hai!
Wish Kabir Singh makers also did a debate like this.. The polarization around this film is nowhere near Kabir Singh 🔥
That debate was more about the values the film and the filmmaker stand for rather than the film itself.
@@AmanKumar-de1kc the director gave a perfect reply to anupama who only questions misogyny in films other than her huband's film sanju

I really loved this concept where the makers and buyers of the film came forward and accepted that their film isnt a smash hit but had an audience that didnt like it.The film has been bought and streamed. There was no need to do it this upfront but huge respect for the director to sit through all this criticism even after they pocketed profits.Hope to see such conglomerations for more films
I love the sarcasm in this comment lol
It is a smash hit...numbers talk
This so depressing slow and boring third grade movie
Sau baat ki baat....the film "gehraiyan" right from trailer onwards..seemed obvious....means there was no unpredictability... wahi 4 log, wahi aapas mai BC....shakun must accept that it was a shit movie...& it happened bcos shakun was toooooo wandered in different layers of the movie he felt he is in centre of the universe, & what he is doing is absolutely right...but in between of the movie if he would asked third party opinion , they would had said....its a shit movie....!! Why ZMND worked with only 4 characters was bcos , these 4 characters had an individuality of their own they had their own stories , so audience didnt get bored... But in gehraiyan 4 characters were just pounding on each other....for around 2 hours & audience just got bored...and...I had feeling , deepika was given the meat of the movie bcos she is a senior ? Seriously if such things come in a movie making process, obviously it would be seen on screen...& last but not the least....the plot was a shit....it was just shit.
This makes me so happy. Irrespective of what anyone thought about the film. Isn't it commendable that the Hindi film industry has come out with a film like this that has brought out such extreme polar reactions and debates over it? The fact that so many people have so many opinions about the film in itself is a largely commendable feat in my opinion. When have we ever had such intense debates over a film? I think its brilliant. Loved the film. Loved this video.
@Anurag Kumar Singh you have a lot of time to waste then dont u? u click on a video about a movie u hate, u scroll through the comments and then choose a comment u dont agree with to reply to. hmmm
Ain't every movie is talk about like that.
It was building up to be a good film but then it feels Shakun Batara got bored and decided to introduce that crazy plot twist just to get done with it
People of privilege can't go through emotional upheavals? Loved this!
I personally loved Gehraaiyan yes its not flawless but I fell in love with the nuances
Appreciate Shakun so much here. Even on his social media handles, it was a delight to watch him share reviews from all sides. This is a truly mature and responsible artist. Brilliant discussion. Let's keep doing it for all movies?
It is awkward for film critics to explain and "amplify" what they meant in their review. They had shared their opinion and if the film makers wanted more conversation, that's welcome too. But in a 30 min format, with 5 critics, this dialogue had done the opposite. Turning a nuanced movie (which all critics acknowledged) into take away summaries.
I had read all their reviews. And i believe this 30 min format had forced them to black& white instead of the multitudes they had written.
Yes
Having a big production house backing you really helps. You can rope in critics for a long discussion on a completely tatti film and explain to people why they should like the movie! Maan gaye sahab!
This is nothing but just another promotional event for a long-forgotten film.
The movie was fantastic
You do not have to always relate to a character to like a movie or a book. Rather you need to question if this piece of art evoked a feeling within you or not? Most of the critics on this panel seem to have never learned about what criticism is. Sucharita Tyagi is one rare critic that really understands the context and reviews it. Let me point out that I do not agree with her review always, but do admire her process, logic and reasonings. It is ok if you like the movie or not, but as a critique at least have a proper understanding of your job.
Isn’t that a little ironic because Sucharita said that one of the big reasons why she liked the movie was because she could relate with it…?
This was surprisingly nice that I wish it was longer. As someone who loved the film, I do agree that the other characters needed more development for us to be able to feel for them, Alisha was the only fleshed out character along with Zain, I wish the could have dug a bit deeper into their pasts, given more insight into Tia, the burden of keeping that secret for so many years and motives for wanting to be close to Alisha. The editing and screenplay could have been a bit better too, but barring all that I did enjoy this because I look to be entertained with every film that I watch and it delivered, I also appreciate the depiction of mental illness because it's the closest to what I struggle with. Shakun has mentioned a lot how he loves Woody allen(barf) and you can tell he was inspired by matchpoint, I like this far better than Matchpoint btw since the pacing was better, main characters were better written and acting is far superior.
She didnt know about Alisha being her half sister until her dad died..and karan said he died just 9-11 months ago when him and Alisha were in the car...if only she didnt change the property to her mothers name..Alisha and Zain would hav ended up together..
@@thehypervigilant oh I thought she said she convinced her dad to change the will before he died since she couldn’t stand to see her mom suffer 🤔 maybe I misheard
@@irina009 it was after her dad died hence the "struggle" with lawyers in LA
Yeah, she said she told her dad to change the will so that her mom wouldn't suffer BUT after he died, she found out he didn't change it. So, she had to go to LA and "fix" the paperwork. I don't remember if it was mentioned when exactly she found out about the infidelity. Anyway will rewatch soon lol
Cant deny Deepika was outstanding in that movie❤ she just showed an emotional rollercoaster 🎢 to us.....
We need more such shows, but as expected, the directors hijacked the conversation. Directorial defense as it turned out to be, but supposedly not intended. They just don't get that now, it is the viewers' film. And that costed precious time - e.g., no space left in this chat to speak of the obvious technical and logical issues with the script; shallow characters (e.g., the writer); why are the four characters such a bore; and why the murder investigation is so shoddy, when you are 'shifting' genres? And of course, the joke that if Ananya's character used TrueCaller, she would have got it! These are the real problems with Gehraiyaan (lacking in his previous two films) and we are needlessly making this into some Stanley Kubrick like nuanced layered polarized film, which it is not. The director is right, time will tell, but he's seriously mistaking it for K&S.
Reviewer spends max 3 hours...a director spends 3 years with a film...so they will try to defend it more due to longer connect
Character names.. Al, Tia, Zain.. Bollywood writers are such american (white) wannabes.. Shame shame..
The thing that was most irritating was the constant and repetitive use of word "fuck" by all the characters in the movie, so much so that it sort of started becoming annoying. Maybe, director was of the notion that the usage of the same somehow depicts that people are from some high class rich background. Gehraiyaan nowhere comes close to shakun batra's Kapoor and sons.
The movie somehow felt very superficial and there was no character that one could really relate with. Still, everything would have been okay but, that twist at the end was what completely destroyed the movie. Felt like it was unnecessarily added without having given a proper thought to it.
Yes, they’re like high school kids, thinking that saying fuck every five seconds makes you cool and edgy. It was contrived and unnatural. Cringe quite frankly
exactly!!
I think that’s generally how people in these places speak. I am not from that background, but I studied with those people in schools and colleges. So maybe that’s why I never thought the usage of the word ‘fuck’ incessantly stood out for me in the movie.
when u sum up all the eventful situations of ur life’s journey( it’s when these words come out automatically) in a nutshell .......it will come up very frequently............
This is a great change for our cinemas to be able to connect and understand their audience, their admirers and their critics, truly if we support such concepts to content Indian filmmaker’s can produce will truly be something.
Shakun Batra & Karan Johar started by saying we are not here to defend the movie and then did just that.
Karan knows this business inside out and he’s very interesting to listen to.
I rewatched it last night for the second time since the premiere last Thursday. I haven’t been able to get this film out of my head. This has never happened to me. I’m on the “love it” side by the way. Personally I think the “hate it” side aren’t capable or intelligent enough to comprehend this film. Toodles.
Ps: obviously this is Deepika’s film but Zain was my favorite character. And mini Deepika (Ananya) also shined.
Wow, ppl that don't share your opinion are incapable of comprehending the movie and less intelligent....
Yes I loved it. I respect everyone’s opinion but I have to say that the hatred is uncalled for and most of it is due to the actor’s personal choices which is the worst thing
I am also on the love it side. The twist was fuckin amazing and DeePee and Naseeruddin sir stood out for me.

I liked the metaphorical parallels between the financial fraud and the emotional relations of Zain. However, as one wise man has said, there needs to be a text first before a subtext 🤣🤣

For me, Indian found it difficult to see the hero of the film (Deepika) gone through her journey played a little villain herself and picked herself. We as an audience were expecting Deepika to sort of be righteous indignation about her past life to Ananya. The youth were not able to connect because although we do have modern relationships terms but it is based on morals. We still believe in infidelity but we care about karma.
An evolved filmgoer wouldn't have any problem with Deepika's character.. it's other characters that work for some n doesn't for others..
So true
For me the problem was not Deepika's character being morally ambiguous and not thinking twice before cheating on her partner. For me my biggest gripe with the movie was the genre shift. And at the end of the movie I felt that there was not much I could take away from the movie. The movie speaks about childhood trauma, mental health and infidelity all of which are interesting points for discussion but towards the end I felt Shakun was trying to pack in too much of his ideas into a 3 hour movie. By the end of it apart from the brilliant conversation scene between Deepika and Mr. Naseeruddin Shah there was nothing much to connect to.
Karan may be a lot of things but his filmaking abilities (direction, production, marketing, intuition) are better than most. Thankfully he wasn't having a verbal diarrhoea here and i found myself nodding to all his statements. Like it, hate it, despise it, call it a Match Point copy - Gehraiyaan was something. Much better than the umpteen crap films we get every week not just in Bollywood but throughout the country.
🤣..Very funny.. Don't judge a person from an interview..he is whole complete different specie when it comes to directing or producing movies
I watch the movie. And was like.. Ok!
I am in the middle.
The title 'Gehrayiyan' and trailers gave me a different perspective on the film but it turned out to be something else.
I feel it was less deeper and more on egoistical characters who actually needed to go deeper in themselves to call it Gehraiyaaan in the first place.
It justifies its name when you think about 'the animal instincts within us vs our moral values we all have'.. these characters are like anyone.. looking them from a distance doesnt feel gd..they don't look filmy..
True
I think Shakun and karan are very intelligent who agree to have this conversation and hear out everyone's opinion but also able to say their own
The fact this movie has created a storm worldwide not matter you liked it or not. But it has created a debate and discussion that itself is a biggest proof that how successful this movie is 🔥🔥🔥💪💪

I'm from Pakistan and trust me tons of people from my country have watched it. I loved it though, Deepika walked away with film 🔥
for me gehraiyaan for the first watch was 7/10 coz i entered this movie thinking this is gonna be about heartbreak and them trying to prove how beautiful and sacred their newly found connection is compared to their old dry relationship but as i entered into the movie and within 1 hour by realizing that this movie isnt what i signed up for but the shift was actually so fresh and i could adjust to it so well that by the end i liked it and really appreciated the plot for showing the real life humans who actually in the back of their heads always think about themselves first..
the SECOND WATCH had me personally soooo amazed.straight 9.8/10 .the second watch was for deepika..the actor she is!how she made alisha convincing to audience NEEDS A BOW!! my focus was fully on alisha this time which made me know other characters even more..how alisha was always afraid of what happened to her mom not happen to her which ended up happening to her which is like MANIFESTATION GONE WRONG! at the end alisha realizing the maze that she created for herself didnt even exist in the first place..that connected with me so well coz been in a place where i always thought certain thing SHOULDNT happen to me but that ended up happening to me coz thats how life works, those things come and hit you like a wave which u always fear would happen..
the idea of films being relatable have never sit write with me coz never ever lifestyle of a character or the luxurious or even the poor or whatever it maybe never be relatable to u but what will be always be relatable to u is the emotions and feeling of the character and THIS MOVIE RIGHTIFULLY DOES JUSTICE TO IT. coz the GREY characters are what real humans are!!
the N no of interpretation of this movie is happening because of the innumerous amount of opening to the stories of each characters..the viewers are picking on things like how a predator would chose if 1000 no of prey where available.the predator will only chose the things which they find attractive to eat..
anyway kudos to u for opening such big conversation.if this wasnt a mainstream movie with actors in mainstream it wouldnt have brought up such huge conversations..this was what lacking in mainstream..the real discussions about the plot and characters rather than box office collection and star power coming into effect! SHAKUN KEEP BEING IT REAL..
At one point we thought why can't we just name it 'Khanna and daughters', shakun says.. I feel that's the film they messed up a little.. both the men characters are designed just to bring these two sisters together.. personally I wanted to watch a modern day KHNH and how the characters handle it.. i appreciate for the rawness and how each character have their own selfish reason like real people do.. may be it's the mood the film felt bit gimmicky with that ending.. i would loved it if it was a true 'khanna and daughters'... I am confused about sidharth's character, it seems real but something missing for a gd film experience..
it like deepika telling her depression story

People who have watched MATCH POINT Hollywood movie- will find this to be a copy. It’s no where a match between these 2 films. You are so hooked while watching Match point. Everything is so justified. Whereas in Gehraiyaan- the intensity of emotions did not match with the situation at all.
No matter how they sugarcoat it, this movie is a poor attempt at copying Match Point with just an Abbas-Mastan twist.

Interesting to have reviewers and filmmakers meet in a non-combative way (as Praneetha's comment points out, their equanimity may be due to there being nothing financial at stake), but for a lot of reasons, no such face-to-face discussion can ever be as wide-ranging and subtle as the discussions we used to see on Rangan's blog. To take just one example, Anupama quickly backs off from her "posh people angst" argument and lets KJo steer her to a completely different one about the perceived coldness of the characters, so we never get to see her dig deep into her own point and defend it as best as she can.
All 4 actors are supposed to be the same age. Ananya is clearly a decade younger than Deepika. Nobody buys it. Why not a different actor who is more mature and perhaps better suited.
Sucharita.. someone did you dirty by not telling you to cover that bald spot. 😥
Man, it's brutal what they did. Brutal.
Pretending a film is deep under the guise of “mental health” and “childhood trauma” is just bullshit. A bad script is a bad script. Kabhi alvida na kehna is a beautiful movie… so stop acting like the Indian audience dislikes the movie because of infidelity.
I watch movies for messages .. this movie really gave good message.. we can't escape from mistakes and the worst consequences we need to face for cheating

This is such a nice topic to discuss. Moderator lady actually ruined it. Allow experts to talk. That is more interesting. Allow Karan and Shakun to talk about film making process. For all future filmmakers including me this could have been an academic class. It was wasted because of moderator lady.
This is the pick clown behaviour of films in India after getting rejected by almost all the audience and critics. There is nothing called polarized reaction for an ordinary film like Gehrayian. It was almost a parody film on complicated relationships, the camera moving in a sleazy way in the sex scenes was a takeaway, and you call it a serious film.
There are people who love the film, including me and I have friends who both loved it or hated it. This is the literal definition of polarization.
Biggest flop movie of the year........pushpa and Akhanda is any time better........watching south Indian movies make sense
This is very similar to Woody Allen’s Match Point. I remember watching it sometime in 2006 . In Gehraiyaan the movie plot has been changed a little . The characters are so alike just the Desi version of it!
I've just noticed Shakun Batra is also A....(plz anyone make me sure about it)
Shakun says the audience is used to a traditional style of falling in love. Well duh!! Who made us used to it? KARAN JOHAR who is sitting right there. Amazon, please stop doing this. How much bad content will you make with the same man?

I agree with Anupama, Movie is good but we didn't connect with emotions
I just loves when a film comes out and there are polarising reviews....just know that "Cinema/Art" is subjective....so there's never going to be a film nor has been one which each and everyone must love. And I just loved Gehrayiaan probably a teeny tiny bit less than Kapoor and Sons. I really want such fresh movies to come out of Bollywood and it's fair share of masala films as well.
Every person I spoke to had a different opinion on the film. So this made a lot of sense to me.
Anupama is correct. I didn’t buy into Zayn trying to kill Alisha. Going to that extreme didn’t seem plausible
I loved this movie. It lingered on my mind for days after I finished watching it. It shocked me multiple times but it also made me go - oh that earlier reaction of a character now makes perfect sense with the new information I just received. I love shakun’s style of storytelling- I call peeling the onion 🧅. You never know the whole story until the end.

What’s the point of doing a critics and filmmakers discussion for a film that is a remake of a Hollywood movie?
The reasons why I liked the movie are as follows:-

The movie is a copy of Matchpoint directed by Woody Allen, who Shakun said he’s inspired by. He’s trying to pass it off as his original work, but that’s just not true. They’re really just sitting around and analyzing it as though it was such an intellectual film
Deepika Padukone's character does not bear much of anger over Zain's attempt to kill her...that was so non filmy and appreciable
You should have bring ashneer grovar, he would done a great review
Yea..
*** Spoiler***
My issue with the movie was how on earth did slipping on a bottle make one go over a boat? How? Is it the same physics that applies to all Bollywood, Tollywood movies? And Deepika just looked so much older than the cousin than when they were both younger. As kids their age difference didn't seem like much.
Ok bunch of English speaking elite film 'critics' in krk's words 'Samosa critics' completely delusional and disconnected from masses. In last years all major hits from bollywood are remakes.
Man, we really need some better movie critics
True AF
If you are beautiful, young, rich, everything is justified ( cheating and murder) and you get away with it. Beautiful message by the filmmaker.
I agree with Shubha. It did seem to be very choppy. Couldn’t connect with the characters emotions. I normally cry at the slightest emotion but here though the emotions were there I couldn’t feel them. I felt let down. Was expecting more. I loved Kapoor and Sons
