I’m glad I went back and watched this one again. I got a kit for Christmas, and have made some progress, but my methodology seems to have gotten mixed up. At least I can make it again if I need to start with another blank.
I made a couple of those a few years ago, Jim. I used a cheap plastic sliding bevel gauge from a home improvement store. Removed the blade and just tossed the rest. Something that I did on one of them that I really like was to blue the blade. I heated it red hot and plunged it into motor oil. I did the same to the bolt and wing nut that I used at the pivot.
Very neat 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I made a smaller one but without any protruding nut for loosening or tightening the blade. It’s just a friction fit and folds in on itself like a pocket knife so the whole blade disappears into the handle. I saw the design on a boatbuilder’s channel and it’s an incredibly handy little tool to keep in your pocket or pouch.
I have an old Bevel Gauge I picked up with some other stuff from MarketPlace, lovely old wood (no idea what) and the Brass is pinned on the bottom and has screws holding the top. Its contoured with a nice 'thumb grove' on each side and the body thins down on the top. Rather than a thumb screw the bevel is set with a 'lever' style nut that can be loosened or tightened with a single finger.
Nice job, great little project. Parts / kits are very affordable. May have to make a few, can always use them... And nice gift for my woodworking daughter ++
Another great video and an easy project, I think I’ll order several kits. A few for me and a couple for one of my student’s who has begun to really like hand tools. I’ll let hm make is and share the video with him.
Hi James yet again a detailed create/build and tell session. As a suggestion for the new users maybe better to drill the whole before gluing so to ensure holes in the brass fitting match? Thank you and all the best to you and family.
Hey James somewhat off topic. I've ordered your wax products and just love them. Do you, or have you, considered offering your homemade boiled linseed oil?
I have thought about selling just the oil. But it would be crazy expensive. Like $40 a pint. Generally I tell people to go by tried and true Danish oil. It is just polymerized Lindsey oil. Exactly the same thing as what I use. Just cheaper and easier to get.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo thanks James for the quick reply as always. I watched your video on the subject, and I have Danish oil on hand. $40 is a very fair price, for what you're getting considering the fact that you have to buy the materials, there's somebody in thedh backyard having to sit down and whip it up, Jar, label and get it to the postmaster. Anyway if you have any left over on any of your batches full, half, quarter, jar just get a hold of me I will be happy to lay down the $40.
I was going to poo-poo this a little bit, but now I’m actually wondering if I might want to build one myself: get a blade and put the rest of the hardware together from other sources, since I’m not a huge fan of brass (almost everything about brass is great, but I really don’t like the colour). Hmmm…

Thank you for the videos. I've now made two of these and helped my two grandsons make one each.

Thanks for the link to materials.
I like these types of videos more than the live streams.
I do a build video every Saturday. Thursday. Is a tool talk or how to and Tuesday is the live video.

Thats an acute looking bevel gauge! Your explanation wasn't too obtuse that I couldn't follow along.
Thanks. I like it. No power tools. No background soundtrack. No excuses.
No epoxy version would use brass through-pins?
Generally the next best would be hide glue. But a lot of them reinforce with brass's pins.
It needs the Wood by Wright burn stamp . Looks great 👍
Nice work!

Beautiful work, James! It really turned out amazing! 😃
I need to make a few of those as well. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
4:58 you could use a drill bit instead if you have one that’s same thickness as the piece
Great video, nice tool.
As a 45+ ye. Carpenter. I've always known these as a "sliding T bevel"
Yes age and where we up in the world as I know them as Sliding bevels LOL
They go by a dozen different names. Depends on what tradition and location you are from.
Wow, i was just planning to make a bevel gauge
I'm good at reading minds.
Lovely!

Are you aware of any kits for making folding rules?
I am not. That would be cool.
Comment down below!
The biggest problem for me is often remembering which measurement is on which bevel gauge.
Yes. Struggle is real
Get a liquid chalk marker and write it on the blade.
I thought you was gonna make the whole thing from scratch :)

First!!!!
Congrats. I really do need to come up with a prize for that.
How to m̶a̶k̶e̶ Assemble A Bevel Gauge,... but still nice! I would go fully Uri Tuchman on it :D
