Airbus UNABLE TO LAND due to Strong Crosswind

  • Earlier today JustPlanes captured this Airbus A321 trying to land at London Gatwick Airport, floating at first and then finally touching down too far down the runway forcing it to go around and make another attempt. Poor passengers!
    Please forgive us for the quality of the sound. Over the past month we have been setting up our 2nd production facility which will be based in London with the goal to bring you a new series that will be FREE for everyone to enjoy. We will be making an announcement shortly about the details... Today was our 1st day of testing all the new equipment for our new London crew and it will take us a little time to get everything oiled properly.

    He kept his xwind imputs in all the way kicked the right rudder to allign with the centerline but it just wanted to keep floating. Good decision to hit the TOGA.

      I agree, the floating is what got him on the first attempt. It looked as though it was an unstable approach due to high sink rate and overcorrecting on flare. Set it down with authority on the second. Wise to crash and dash. A true pilot knows when to bolt and live to give it another go. There is no shame in bolting. There is shame in skidding, flat spots in tires, overheated brakes, flirting with an overrun, and stressing the engines on prolonged reverse.. ..not to mention gambling with all souls aboard.

      Yes you are right, but a "go-around" implies that the plane was not able to land on the first attempt. It is the correct term to use. Not just "unable to land"... then uh what, the plane will stay in the air forever? Lol.

    Unable to land? The second one I think would be classified as a landing. The temptation is to kick the rudder too soon on crosswind landings. Its instincive to want to touch down with the nose aligned with the runway. But you have to hold that crab angle into the crosswind at least until your main gear has enough weight on. Otherwise you become a drift racer chasing the plane from one side of the runway too another.

      You dont do a smooth landing with these conditions, hence they were flaring for many seconds. Roll to the wind, yaw to centre of the RWY and add some power for the increase in drag. And you land...

    I think there should be spotter to tell the pilot that they ok to land ...especially during strong crosswind ...im just saying

      Actually, there is a "spotter." The controller in the tower has every bit of information needed for the pilot to make a go-no go decsion. The controllers have runway braking grip index for snow and rain (how effective their tires will grip the runway on braking), reports from previous pilots that just landed (PIREPS), wind speed and direction (including gusts) and crosswind component (wind direction relative to the runway), runway visual range, altimeter settings l(barometric pressure) for altitude reading accuracy), precipitation type/kind and intensity, cloud tops and bottoms in altitude so the pilots will know when to expect they will enter and exit the clouds upon decent. They offer any and all of this information well before the pilots are preparing to land so they can calculate, digest, and consider whether a landing under those conditions is allowable under company safrty policy and the limitations of the aircraft.

      BobEckert56 I guess it is still mostly 80s technology... What every manufacturer needs is 90s technology to handle unlimited crosswind components.. 90s technology is what got you the NASA MD11 thurst vectoring testing! (landing and controlling the plane with just thrust! & there is also a cool video about it in youtube!)

      rkan2 No flight control system that's even remotely practical (and certainly there's none available) can come close to making landing in unlimited crosswinds an option; they can't defy the laws of physics. As it is the Airbus narrowbody crosswind limit of 38 knots is more generous than most.

      f3nd13y remember, some FO’s are qualified Captains who’ve taken 40% pay cuts to stay employed, e.g., FO Jeff Skiles who was flying with Captain Sully. Not all, obviously, just some.
