Clearly you've never heard a P51, a Hispano, or Corsair power up. ....about as loud as a top fuel dragster. We could hear them on the runway from miles out . That being said, these neighbors are just jelly lol.
These have nothing in common with modern prop planes .....these are warbirds , son. Not a stich of exhaust sound management or conversion on them . Every fraction of horsepower was considered needed for life and death. So no mufflers here lol.

Roon Bare just to clear it up; I’m a 30 year A&P, I.A. Here in the USA. I also hold a VFR, SEL endorsement on my airman’s certificate. Yes I have heard the RR Merlin and the P&W R-2800. Also the early Packard Allison the P-40and early Mustangs used. Face to face on the ground right next to all three engine variants. None of them sound like jackhammers nor top fuel dragsters. The drag engine reference is close. They sound like the soundtrack to FREEDOM and avgas powered love baby! I do agree the neighbors are just effin nuts and most certainly “jelly”! This btw. Was not meant to be a snarky reply just a courteous, I have experience in the aviation industry. Hope all who are reading this are healthy, happy and, safe during this crazy time we’re living in.

@@johnafsoc8929 I don't think they , nor I , are claiming they Sound like a jackhammer ....but they are friggin loud like a jackhammer ! I believe was the intended point . I've been not only next to, but In quite a few warbirds . Related a west Texas collector who recently passed. Still have a few for sale including the world's only flying PBY , a P51, an Avenger, and several others if you are interested . Fact is , any number of these planes can easily drown out the noise of a jackhammer ....how would I know? .....happens to be a rock quarry on the property too.

Effin spot on mate, my thoughts exactly. Jack-hammer my arse, what a load of old bollocks. A warm up and takeoff run with a motor of that type causes brief splutter of noise; then you can get on with your day as normal. Much more irritating are the twats that fly over me repeatedly on sightseeing/familiarisation/training flights in droning highwing Cessnas. This bloke is trying to get to work.

The neighbours are sour because they lack the benefit of regional air superiority. Pehaps one of his neighbours (or a group of them) need to invest in either an A6M Zero or Messerschmitt Bf109 replica and go up and engage him in air to air combat... If the neighbours want to outright guarantee they win an air war then they could always aquire a replica Me262 jet fighter.

Apart from not sounding right Alison Spitfires just don't look right either. Sure they look good they are Spitfire replicas after all but the nose cowling profile change to suit the Alison engine just throws the original sleek lines off a bit... This is a true story: There was this sad man living in western Finland, who repeatedly complained about the "noise" from a guy flying his ultralight aircraft in the area. Well, ultralights make about as much noise as a sewing machine. The ultralight pilot happened to know a Finnish Air Force fighter pilot, whom he told about this. Then one day, an F-18 Hornet passed above the grumpy old man's house with full afterburners on. The complaint about "noise" ended right there.

The run up takes less than a minute, and the engine is not brought to full power, normally only 1200-1700 RPM. Unless you are within a hundred feet of the plane the noise is minimal. If it’s anything like the UK, then he has to have planning permission.
In the UK, without planning permission, we’re allowed to use private land as an airfield, 28 times per year - It’s known as the 28-day rule.
The reporter said that he was currently allowed to fly about once per week - which would suggest that there is a similar ruling in Aus.
It’s a noise-abatement issue. Of course, no planning permission is required to run a lawn-mower, which makes about just as much noise and generally for longer. When taking off, he’ll run his engine at idle for about five minutes to warm it up, at just above idle as he taxis to position for takeoff, then at around full-power as he takes off and he’ll be in the air and climbing away in about ten seconds. As he returns, he’ll make his approach at near idle and then taxi back to where he parks. In the grand scheme of things, he probably is not as much of a noise nuisance as his neighbours are making out him to be.

The Commonwealth government gave away a lot of local airports, airfields and landing areas to local councils. Many councils, dominated by property developers and their arse licking mates the real estate agents, shut them down. They justified it on costs, environmental issues etc. Then they were sold off for, surprise, property development. One of the holdovers is that small airfields and private landing areas in particular, are subject to council regulations, regarding noise, environmental and community impact etc. Councils can not regulate on aviation per se, as Central Coast Council has tried to do by redesignating the deffinition of Warnervale. They can make life difficult by using their own local authority.

The city council where I lived asked the crop dusting outfit not to fly before 6:00am. I would hear the planes take off in the morning with the windows open but if the windows were closed not a sound until he fly's closer. This was my alarm clock to get up for school in the summer months. The old gentleman that owned the airstrip was a airplane trainer during the war he would always have great stories to tell. He never caused any trouble. He was a gem to our small community.
