Supermarine Aircraft Spitfire Mk.26b at Warbirds Over Wanaka - A Warbird For The Rest of Us

  • Pilot, owner, builder, and New Zealand Sales Agent, Ivan Campbell , talks about the Supermarine Aircraft Spitfire Mk 26.b -- a two seat, 90% scale replica of the Spitfire Mk.9, which is available as a kit aircraft.
    There are several of these aircraft already flying in New Zealand, with more on the way, and there's well over 50 or more around the world. This is an achievable way for General Aviation pilots to get to be able to own and fly their own Spitfire!

      What have I done? Over 40 years of experience maintaining multiple types of military aircraft, both current and ex military, including REAL SPITFIRES!
      And those things are on the experimental category and so not maintained IAW certified C of A aircraft.
      I have now had over 40 years of experience with multiple international licensences, CAA EASA FAA and CASA in Australia.
      I wouldn't sign for a screw on one of those things, especially after one of them replicas crashed not far from my parents house in Australia killing the pilot, no sir they are dangerous...
      Enjoy your fun! 😉

    I love the spitfire. One of the most beautifull and dangerous of all times. Not to mention the engine sound. The replica is superb. Great video. Regards from Brazil.

    It looks a bit out of proportion, because the fuselage is 89.5% percent to scale (they call it 90% for marketing reasons) - but the wings and undercarriage are from the now discontinued 75% kit they used to make - because those wings are already world certified. I think if they scaled the wings and undercarriage up to 90% this would be a *MUCH* better looking aircraft. Heck; if they made 90% Hurricanes, ME-109s, FW-190s and P-51s I think they'd have a great market on their hands! "Shut up and take our money!!

    It's a cute little thing, but no substitute for a real Spitfire. 420hp versus *2,000hp* is a lot. Still a lovely plane - and much more accessible than a real Spitfire, that's for sure! Where do you even find a new Merlin these days?

    I’ve often wondered if the wing is a different scale to the fuselage as the Mk.26s always seem to not look quite right in that regard. Is the wing 90% as well or smaller?

      Because Jag engins are notoriously unreliable. The Chevy LS motor is one of the most reliable easy to work on engines in the world and parts for it are everywhere globally. On top of all this replacement costs are kept to a minimum.

    I can't stand the goofy looking oversized canopy, the kit designer clearly has no eye for the subtleties that truly make Spitfires beautiful. Just making the shape roughly the same and slapping a paint job on it doesn't really do it.

    • @brendonrutherford5118
      @brendonrutherford5118 5 років тому

      You're not wrong there, if it's supposed to be a 90% replica one may as well go the miserable & extra 10% & do a proper full sized job in the first place. The only aircraft one can truly call a "Spitfire" is a real "Spitfire" & not a mere replica make believe!! It's just like good Whiskey it needs to come off the "TOP SHELF". "understandee de englishee"

      I also has a lot to do with modern safety. These are designed to be recreational aircraft so they're designed to be easy for everyone regardless of size height etc. Also you along with everyone else who's complaining that it's not a real spitfire this or that how many real spitfires are there in the world and outside of billionaires who can afford one???
      I think it's awesome that there's somebody out there making this available.

    • @brendonrutherford5118
      @brendonrutherford5118 Місяць тому

      Irrespective of what it looks like & how well it has been designed & how well it performs etc, etc, & etc but the bottom line is, this flying machine IS SIMPLY NOT A SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE as we know it. Without a doubt its a great looking replica but that is the operative word, REPLICA!! Check the definition of the word "replica" in a good dictionary & you'll see what its all about!!
      It's not a crime to have a "Replica" of anything but it is certainly misleading to try to make out that you have something of whatever & that you maybe trying to pass off as the real McCoy!! Now that's damn straighout dishonest!!

      You're certainly right its not a spitfire 100% replica which would cost at least 5 to 10 times more to buy. It also flies close to the original to the spitfire built during the war, as verified by a several veteran pilots when it was first offered in the 90's. It's what it is, and most people aren't rich enough to restore an original or afford a full size (or pay the price of maintaining that aging Merlin engine with its 27 liter displacement). What really is your objection, just looks? I guess you hate all less than full size aircraft. Proportionally, the cockpit 'bubble' is pronounced, due to the size of the aircraft and the greater average size of most humans of the present day, compared to war years males. It's also due to the more vertical seat of this model compared to the more prone war time seat, required for the extreme 'G' forces felt during extreme turns and dive recovery. I visited the 'factory' here in Texas, I asked questions, you simply offered your dislike of its appearance.
