I'm a performer at this faire (a member of the fae, some of the fantastical creatures you caught in this video). Wanted to let you know that this video has been passed around the whole cast; we were heartbroken when the faire was (understandably) cancelled this season, but seeing this wonderful tribute to the fair brought the entire cast so much joy. These performers are all such dear friends of mine, and everyone was just so tickled and delighted to watch this and find some of our favorite moments from this past season. Thank you so much for this wonderful season, and we hope to see you two (and everyone else) at the faire next year. Merry meet, merry part, merry meet again!

Is the movie "Knight riders" a thing among Ren Faire folk? I saw it in 1981 and it got me interested in going to a Faire when they started being a thing. I am glad I didn't take pictures of the dress I made-it was an anachronistic nightmare, lol

The video captured the feeling of being on a day vacation when at the Faire. It's a stepping out of time and place and being amused and bedazzled, like a walking dream, with the sights, sounds, smells, laughs, gasps of a vision of happy people dreaming along with you.

As a Scottish person who grew up in countries with zero experience of the Ren Faire or its 'inclusive' standards, I am known to get a little emotional, shedding a teardrop or 2 upon hearing traditional Scottish bagpipes. Sadly, the only response the Ren Faire pipes evoked was the urge to yell "Stop it! You're hurting my ears!" (edit:clarity)

In Germany we call our renaissance fairs "Mittelaltermärkte" (= medieval markets).
Some of those markets were fantasy-medieval-steampunk events in parks, but lots of them actually were held in super old castles, fortresses, and the last one I attended was in an actual medieval former convent / monastery, and lots of people try to dress as authentically accurate as possible. There are BBQs, mead and beer tents, a tight-knit vendor community, show acts, music, and I miss them like a November tree misses its leaves. 😔

    • @noeljohnson3918

I went to one of those fairs in Wittenberg and it was all Renaissance crafts in the park. Tents set up and people in peasant garb cooking over fires, pounding metalcraft, carving wood, making pots, making wine. Interesting, but not fun. Nothing to participate in, and of course, the onlookers were all dressed in modern street clothes.

@@daviedood2503 hello dave! non-binary is a label you might put on yourself when you don't claim being a part of the gender binary (that being female - male (or anything, really)). different people identify as non-binary in different ways, just in the way that different people identify themselves in the roles of male/female in different ways depending on all kinds of reasons.
genderfluid, on the other hand, is where what gender you identify as does not stick to a single label for the rest of time, but simply changes without control. therefore, a genderfluid person might call themselves a man one day, but non-binary a different day, and so on. a non-binary individual might also consider themselves genderfluid, it is all different depending on who you are speaking to since, again, everyone sees their gender in a unique way.
it is important to note that i am only a single individual and my view on this matter may differ from other's who are just as informed, but it is important to always be open to new conversations and new aspects of the gender binary (or non-binary)!

On a side note, dearest Bernadette, I’m going to take this opportunity to tell you how very much, not only your life work but you as a person are dear to my heart.
I know you say that you are chronically introverted, a strange human and something of a swamp hag, and of course you have other completely human struggles to deal with, because such is life, but you are also entirely inspiring, adorable, true and strong and the cleverest witch.
Over these many months we’ve been on the UA-cams together you have enticed some very amazing things out of me, of which I can not thank you enough. Let me explain - I’ve always enjoyed sewing (historic dresses being a wonderful but unattainable aspiration) but sort of forgot about it in the last couple of years, but you went and set me to dreaming again! I told myself making a historic dress was far beyond me; however, one day I said to myself that I was going to give it my best try, and we’ll...seven projects later I’m a total addict. I really enjoy hand sewing now, too. Really, you have informed much of my thought pattern around historic sewing and dress. Your Victorian/Edwardian style is impeccable and has also become my era of choice. I am now becoming a modernish Victorian thing unashamedly wearing my creations and I feel I’ve found home.
    ❤️ Thank you, Bernadette.

They’re maybe not the size of Manhattan but they often take place in old castles and people (myself included) dress up in medieval-like clothes like linnen shirts or very simple leather shoes. In German this is called “Gewandung” which roughly translates to clothing or maybe raiment (I don’t really know😅)
I really miss them, especially the biggest one I know the MPS (Mittelalterliches Phantasie Spektakulum) with some well known German medieval folk bands. It’s almost like an open air concert with a huge medieval market around it.

In my experiences, although their is a heavy emphasis on Renaissance period inspired clothing at a Ren Faire, almost anything can be found, from Middle Ages, to high fantasy, or even Star Trek. My experiences with German Mittelaltermarkt was a bit more confined to the Middle Ages. I even saw people approaching visitors in fantasy clothing and instructing them that that wasn't Middle Ages costume. But perhaps other German faires are more forgiving of these breaches of costume etiquette.

I've been a performer at a renaissance faire, as well as done pre-show entertainment for Shakespeare on the Green, which is 3 weeks in June and July, 4 nights a week where they will perform 2 plays, usually one tragedy and one comedy. And have done so in costume(probably not historically accurate, but I make do with what I've got), which usually means I have at least 3-4 layers of fabric pretty much everywhere. It can be excruciatingly hot, we have often joked about putting ice packs between the chemise and the corset just to keep cool. It is a lot of fun, singing madrigals that are historically accurate, and this was the first time in 6 years that I haven't done Shakespeare on the Green. I remember dreading doing it because it was a lot of work, but once you are out there it makes it totally worth it, and now I really miss it.

If you ever do decide to try ice packs, go look up SCA & Ren Faire solutions. Several of the folks who play in those venues have come up with some quite clever solutions for heat beyond what our Renaissance European ancestors would have known.

You describing the temperature in celsius made me so happy. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate what an awesome faun Dani is?

ah... another comment already pointed out that these also exist in germany, and i miss them so much too! my village has a castle in it, so there used to be medieval markets there all the time. middleschool me would go hogwild over anything with a dragon on it.
of course, for us, it wasn't corona that killed those but the fact that some rich man bought the castle for his wine company, but... still.

Invade his wine tastings in full garb! Sing rousing medieval songs while toasting his wine! :D

Drink the wine straight from the barrel. Invade the castle! Wear. Capes!

Tabis aren't just for martial arts! When I was in rural Japan visiting my friends farm, the modern hardware store nearby sells them in the carpentry section alongside traditional Japanese carpentry tools.

But check out that 2019 vintage crowd!

Oh my goodness! I forget that crowds at non-essential venues were a thing back then.

I feel like we should have more of this in the UK. Not now obvs but in the future... English Heritage are missing a trick!

I was *genuinely* shocked to find that ren faires weren't a thing in the UK. I expected they would be huge there, what with people actually knowing Tudor history! 😅

Maybe we have too much history to make a thing of a specific era. Too worried about upsetting the rest of history... We are a nation of overthinkers!

@@bernadettebanner we do have a reenactment culture though! I had a friend at school who did them. I think those are a little more historically accurate, and they are specific to historical events. Lots of historical dress and food and camping and things! No technology, things like that :)

I agree. I'm in the NE and we have lots of castles a bit further north from me & Beamish a bit further south but nothing like this ever happens. :-(

Actually the UK does (or did) have fairs. Fairy fairs, Vampire fairs, Steampunk fairs, and historical reneactment(? spelling?) Fairs.
      We had plenty of them.

This was so lovely! I found myself getting a little teary. I have so missed "going places" and "doing things." The Faire is the one place where I truly feel like I'm amongst my people and I miss it more than a little.

I used to do a tour of the medieval fairs in my state (Australian state, that is) every year. They're a little bit more historical than ren faires, though there's always the handful of people who turn up in anime costumes.
I, for one, was very proud of my painstakingly researched 3rd century Romano-British costume (tube dress. It's a tube dress).
