Things you don't know about this video: that cupcake was seriously the most delicious cupcake I've ever tried. I don't know about you guys but I like frosting BUT not when there's more frosting than actual cupcake, you know what I mean? And this was the PERFECT amount of frosting. To be honest, it is incredibly refreshing seeing you create something you don't love--it makes me realize sometimes we aren't happy with what we create and that's okay. And even great illustrators like you occasionally create something you aren't happy with. I feel a little more relaxed when approaching my own work. Like not everything has to be perfect all the time and making mistakes or redoing a piece is not a failure. Thanks for sharing.

I just had the most stressfull week in my life. I was more stressed than I was on my finals. I will be a part of an local artist alley soon and everything is going just wrong. My prints were printed all wrong, my stickers won't arrive untill last minute and I just want to cry.
But I am not here to complain. I am here to tell you, that during all this madness, YOU are the person who keeps me sane. I watch any of your videos and It really helps me out. So when I saw you uploaded a new video today, It just made me really happy.

I still can't believe you answered my question. And honestly, this is the most helpful Q&A for me so far. I struggle with all the topics that were mentioned. As everyone to some extent, I guess. 💜
I ask myself a lot what my motifs behind my work are. In the start it was definitely for winning approval from others so I could feel as a better person (I was bullied a lot as well), now (when my selfesteem is rising) there is this need not anymore so I stopped drawing for a while, it is kind of bad time for me now, but in the end I realized, that I really enjoy drawing and now I like to do things perfectly only because of me AND also I realized, that if I am not perfect, it doesn't make me a worthless person. And I am trying to believe, that I am good just as I am. Which is still something that I can't internalize just as much as I really would like. (And I think, that not pushing and stopping drawing for a long time is completaly OK as well, because it could in the end reconnect you with drawing in a much more healthy way also.)
I love you. 💜 You deserve all of those 200K subs, girl! (When I feel really down drawing wise, I just sit back and watch all your videos and fredcembers and vlogmases AGAIN and it helped every time!) Those buildings turned very nice with the outline! 💜 And let me tell you something: You look so sexy in the thumbnail!!! 🐞

Gouache dries fast, as I'm sure you've noticed, before you start a project, you can test the colors you're thinking of using to make sure you have a pallette you like. You can also make a test sheet that has a dry sample of your paints that you can quickly reference while planning your projects. Love your videos Fran, you help keep me focused while I draw.
I am sick, Fran and I watched the last three videos back to back. It was so relaxing, educational and overall it helped me feel really good. I love how you are showing your vulnerability with the scenery piece and also telling us about how you overcome common artist struggles. Your advice was so unique and very helpful, and all the videos just make me feel cozy and good. Thank you for all you do, and congrats on 200k subs!

You know when you see someone's work that's so good and you wonder, how could they ever feel unhappy with their art or how could they ever second guess themselves, because they're so good! That's how I feel about you Fran, I know you see mistakes in your art but just know that you're one of those artists that from the viewer, your work is perfect just the way it is!
I love when artists show their vulnerability and imperfections through their work and process. It really does give a different perspective and makes you appreciate the artist even more. It not only helps the artist grow but also helps us who listen to your advice and get inspired.

As others in the comment section mentioned making swatch-cards is really useful with gouache, since the light colors usually dry darker and the dark colors dry lighter.

Hi, Fran. I know it is difficult to tell what a color looked like when wet, but maybe you could do a swatch sheet, like watercolors. For the wet colors, you could take a photo? Then print, and put with the dry swatches. I don't know....just a suggestion. :)

Yes! I do this with all my gouache! It helps a lot. I do a swatch sheet of all my most-used colors and mixes, and then I watch them dry and make little notes on which ones dry lighter or darker. It helps even more if you do the swatch sheet again on dark toned paper so you can really see when the dark colors dry lighter.

Babe, I had to pause the video at 14 minutes and tell you this. You saying you don't like your painting at all just after talking about comparing yourself to others broke my heart. I loved what you are making and while listening to you I thought. Well, this is absolutely beautiful and I'm nowhere near her skill yet. But Fran is doing her thing and I'm doing mine and we're both cool. And then you said you don't like it. That made me really sad because it downplayed what you were saying just 2 seconds before. Don't compare yourself to others. Even if that 'other' was your expectation. You did a really nice job on that illustration!

Hey Fran! With gouache usually the dark colours get lighter and the light colours get dark. I swatch the colour before painting to make sure it’s what I want, and use a hair drier so it’s quicker 😁 And then over time you get used to your colours and how they react when dry! But don’t forget you can paint over gouache as well if you don’t like how it turned out... 😊 PS: Thank you for this long indulgent video 😍

I see you separate the paper from the pad with a knife, this creates some damage around the edges though. I separate them using a bone folder (they are called that but they're made from all sorts of materials) The art supply store should carry some. ;) Have a good weekend!

I really loved this video, especially since Berlin question. Initially I got into your channel via recommendation of another youtuber. And I bingewatched alll the stuff like crazy. So I had kinda timelapse (of speedpainting) overview of your visual style development. And it is amazing! I learned so much and implement stuff into my art routines now.
