I have a kit with nearly all the sockets for my first gen Tacoma, including a 35mm for front axle nut. I found a good list on an online forum and started there. I added a 7/16, 1/2 and 9/16 for accessories that use 1/4", 5/16" or 3/8" hardware commonly found on aftermarket accessories. 19mm covers 3/4" socket for 1/2" fasteners. I also added some punches, files and picks that have all come in handy. And some basic electrical repair tools and supplies.
Great video! A tip I learned from the motorcycle community: when at home I do common repairs with my carry-along tools to make sure I have what I need, it works, and (most importantly) I know and remember what tools I have on hand in my kit
I can't even beging to explain the 10 million ways I use my Knipex pliers..... everything from AN fittings to squeezing rivets. They are one of the greatest tools ever created

realistically no one should be bringing standard socket unless its a specific socket for something specific (fuel filter housing on a 5.9 for example) Since late 90s most vehicles use metric and even if its not a standard nut or bolt, metric sizes will certainly work in a pinch. I like your style of keeping it minimal, simple but yet able to get the job done. Earned a sub my man.
I have had good luck with the Wurth brand tools. They’re a European company, so getting the best metric fitting sizes works. I think they have only been selling in the US for a few years, but they have been selling tools in Europe for decades.
10mm hex - drain plug for 3rd gen Tacoma front diff. Thumbs up to the wobble. For some things you will need them when you don't have a lift to disassemble multiple systems to reach your break. I would recommend multiple 3/8 wobble extensions rather than just a universal adaptor. It is more stable when you have to reach in deep on something like a starter.

Great video and a very pragmatic approach to the subject. With experience on a particular vehicle or through online research, you could probably reduce the number of wrenches and sockets further, especially the deeps... One thing I would say to people just starting to put a kit together, is invest in the tools first, and then buy the fancy and rather expensive tool roll later. You can get a basic canvas M1 Tanker tool bag for under $20 and it will hold a surprising amount. Its not as convenient to use given the lack of organisation, but if the tool kit is only for emergency, once-in-a-blue-moon use, then perhaps that's not such a big deal. Also, consider where you are going to store the bag or roll...

It is kind of fun to watch multiple videos on tools for overlanding. Each person has specific needs and experiences. I am in Oregon and exclusively travel solo and beyond cell services. For me I try to have a more complete tool kit than if I am with a group and within cell range were I can call for assistance. I do like your tool bag. Something to consider.
I literally have a small tool kit that I use to fix my truck and my wife’s car (2015 accord) and it stays in my truck so any tool that I use for any at home repairs are with me while I’m on the road and I find that to be the best because 1 I don’t have a garage to keep my tools but for that same reason I have my tool inside my truck and I don’t even have a big truck I have a (1991 Nissan D21/Hardbody) single cab so space inside my cab is very limited I used a quinn tool set that costs me like $65 and that thing is so useful I also have wrenches and pliers and screws drivers and a full size aluminum 2 ton jack Pittsburg and a small kit from the auto powers store with electrical things like fuses, wire, zip ties, connectors, splices. All this is behind my seats 😅
When it comes to socket and wrench sets for your personal truck, I tell people to go online of their truck manufacture, and look up ever socket and wrench you would need to work on that specific truck and build your kits off that. I’m carrying less than half the sockets and wrenches I used To in my personal truck kit
Nice, I like this kit, especially the modular pouches and tool groupings. The only thing I didn't see is a tire plug kit in case you pick up a nail, screw or other sharp object. You probably already have one along with a small air compressor, just thought it was worth a mention.
I had just bought a Tacoma and was out in the middle of nowhere and my balljoint separated and I drove over my tire lol. Now I carry extra lower ball joints just because of how much a nightmare that night was
What I do when I work on the truck at home I use my tools that carry in the truck and if I need to get in the tool box in the shop depending on what it is I’ll add that to my kit
If you take from the garage toolbox, I recommend keeping those tools in the 4x4 and borrowing from the truck kit, vs doing the opposite. That way if you have issues on the trail, your less likely to have forgotten something. Thanks for watching!

There may be in the Toyota system, but I'm a fleet mechanic so I don't have access to those. A metric tool set will cover just about everything your going to fix on the trail. The nut socket I mention is this video is one of those special sizes outside of the norm.

What brands do you consider high quality tools? I've always had whatever from Lowe's or Home Depot. I've been planning on putting together a quality set of portable/travel tools, similar to your setup. I've been eyeing their zip up tool bag with the 6 Velcro pouches, but I do like the roll as well. I've held off, because I can't decide what brand of tools to get. Are Tekton tools any good? Looking for a little guidance. Enjoyed the video, thanks for your time.
I think the Husky brand or Craftsmen are perfectly fine. I just advise steering clear of the super cheap stuff from Walmart or the 200 piece set for 25 bucks at Autozone. If buying at hardware stores, I’d recommend grabbing a socket from the shelf and going and finding the bolt size it fits. I like sockets to fit tight. Cheap sets will have slop. If your on the side of the road fixing something and you round off a bolt because of a cheap socket, your gonna get pissed that you didn’t spend that little bit extra. Tekton stuff is on par if not nicer than stuff you will find at Lowes, but I think it’s online only so it’s more of a pain to warranty. But usually breaking sockets is only something to worry about if your doing it for a living. It doesn’t happen all that often.
I live in Colorado, never been to Alaska. If you watch this video and intend to take more, that’s great. But if you assume every guy on the trail is an experienced mechanic, then you assumed incorrectly. To say that you don't really need to worry about getting stranded in the US because you're always close to an auto store is negligent and dangerous at best. There are many parts of the Western US where one can be several hours away from any help. Even moreso, off road recovery in only semi remote locations can cost hundreds of dollars or more. Throw in inclement weather and people can easily get in a dangerous situation. It doesn't matter what their level of mechanical knowledge is if they don't have the tools they might need in the first place.

The bag fits into pretty tight places pretty easy in my experience. But yes, tools are certainly more important than the bag.

Yeah that’s the move. If I install something new that takes some odd size, I make sure to add that as well. Such as a roof rack Allen head size.

For a short cheater pipe I’ve used a deep socket on an extension over a breaker bar or ratchet.
Ditch the super 33 tape get 88. It leaves much less residue
