    The like button is insufficient to describe my gratitude for this particular series which gave me a deeper understanding of the sacred coronation ceremony. I'm 69 so this was the first coronation I've witnessed, for me it was pitch perfect in retaining the ancient origins of a sacred ceremony while also celebrating the diverse place our country now is (and all the better for it, in my opinion). I hope not to witness another coronation, my wish is for our new Monarchs to have a long, happy reign which allows the Prince and Princess of Wales the time to raise their children to adulthood and fully prepare them all for their own roles in royal life. My heartfelt thanks to you.

    Your videos regarding the coronation were so helpful in understanding and appreciating the coronation service this morning. Thanks to your video series on the various aspects of the coronation and their symbolism I was able to explain to my husband the different parts of the service and their significance. Seeing the Cosmati Pavement in all of its glory was such a thrill! The ritual and the glorious music moved me to tears several times during the service. The inclusion of leaders of different Christian faiths in paying homage and swearing fealty to the king was heartening to see, and I appreciated Charles’ desire to make the coronation a multi faith, multicultural event where women were played an important part of the ceremony. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life. Again, many thanks to for the time you took to make the videos that helped me to appreciate the importance of the coronation service and ceremony.

    Thank you, Dr. Barton, for the detailed videos you created leading up to the coronation. The way you broke down the ceremony into segments really helped as the ceremony went forward on our video feed in the USA. I pray that King Charles has a long reign. It was wonderful to see the solemnity. This last video really tied things together. Powerful symbolism indeed.
    One of my favorite snapshot moments of the service was Prince William's homage to his dad. The reverent touch to St. Edward's crown and the kiss symbolize to me Prince William's awareness of his own calling one day to wear that crown and serve the people. Truly, the King is above all, a servant after the model of Our Lord. May King Charles have the strength and courage to do that.

Well...my expectations weren't particularly high to begin with and I knew this would be a rather low-key affair, yet they still managed to disappoint me. No dais? Camilla being crowned in the chair of estate? Seriously? You've got to be kidding. 20th century coronations might have been lavish and "outdated", but there was an air of grace in every movement. Thanks so much Dr Barton. I have an avid interest in the monarchy, its history, and its traditions. There is much you covered recently that I knew and I appreciated learning yet still more through your expertise.
    I would be most interested if you would release one more video with your own reflection on today’s great service.
    For myself, two things come to mind. First, since the death of the late Queen I have been thinking about what the King’s coronation might be like, knowing that there would have to be changes from 1953. Yet still, it occurred to me over and again that even if there weren’t the slightest deviation in the liturgy from 1953, it would still look and sound vastly different, reflecting the changes of the 20th century in British society in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and religion.
    Secondly, you might recall the BBC series Elizabeth R starring Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I. Towards the end of the final episode, at the end of her life, she is reflecting on a request from the Commons. She laughs to herself and says, “This is not my father’s time; when We sit We are nearer the ground!” That sentiment struck me today watching the coronation - when we sit we are nearer the ground.
    My two cents from across the pond. Thank you again!

    Dr. Barton, I am so grateful for your series on the coronation. I met with my friends at 1 a.m. to watch the start of the commentary with the hostess choosing our national broadcaster. The information I had about what was proceeding caused me irritation with that production, but it was wonderful to watch it on the big screen with friends. Yesterday I watched the ceremony again without commentary and was brought to tears twice. Thank you for your part in making this momentous occasion so very special for me.

      @Bluebell Flora Of course it would be disrespectful. Didn't stop them pinching Edward's sapphire from his skeletal finger a hundred years after his death, or prevent people opening the graves of long dead kings in the spirit of scientific exploration. Bless 'em. I think it's a human thing. So a discreetly hidden cubicle for an elderly king, almost certainly with prostate problems as most old blokes seem to have, and a tiny tipple for exhausted participants, doesn't seem too disrespectful, in the context of things. 😉

    I found the coronation very moving. I didn't know what to expect and felt so proud of what we did that day. Not only that, the armed forces parading was amazing to see. It's a pity there are people out there who just don't get it. This is part of us, our history and identity. It matters.

    Many, many thanks for all your videos, Allen! We are all much better informed thanks to you. Your Coronation Videos are superb as are all of your videos. Maybe you could consider doing a series of videos on former Monarchs! I find it fascinating on how many of those who end up with the crown were not born with that direct destiny. Before King Charles you have to go back to his Great Great grandfather Edward VII to find another person born as heir and was coronated King or Queen Regnet. Neither George V, VI, or Elizabeth II had been born heir, their intended life was vastly different. But it seems in the House of Windsor you are more likely to be Crowned King if you are the Duke of York rather than the Prince of Wales

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  Рік тому

      Yes that's right - so many of our kings have been second sons. Henry VIII, James II, William IV, George V, George VI among them - only one of them William IV wasn't Duke of York. It is fascinating, how the quirk of fate works. Plenty of new content to come over the coming weeks.

However, I received a string of really very abusive comments and emails, because I wasn't either totally effusive or totally dismissive of it. Life's too short to put up with that, clearly the coronation polarised opinion in I way I hadn't anticipated.

      @allanbarton  Рік тому

      Yes that's right, though the need never arose. I have seen a photo, I can't recall where, of the shrine packed round with sandbags. That wooden superstructure is interesting, long thought to be part of Mary Tudor's restoration - it is more likely of the 1520s or early 1530s and the cover that protected the golden feretory of the saint, and was raised and lowered on pulleys to reveal it.

    Allan. The BBC keeps "reporting" that William the Conqueror was the first monarch coronated in Westminster Abbey. However, I've heard there is evidence that Harold II was coronated there. Yet, the Normans (back then) said Harold's coronation took place at Winchester. What is your "take" on this. Thanks.

    Watching the Coronation was infinitely more enjoyable thanks to your informative videos. It was, however, a pity (for me, at least) to see that the thrones were not elevated on a stepped platform but were simply placed, like common-or-garden (albeit elaborately decorated) chairs at the same level as the rest of the coronation theatre. I wonder why this was the case?

    • @SarahlabyrinthLHC
      @SarahlabyrinthLHC Рік тому

      Havong re-watched the coronation 'highlights' (!) I note that, on leaving the coronation theatre, HM The King descended a shallow but perceptible slope (evident from the angle between the carpet [at the point at which it changes from gold to blue] and the front choir stalls). The thrones were, therefore, indeed elevated, albeit without steps. My apologies for the error underlying my previous comment.

      Well she was but I was shocked how poorly she was treated by a few seconds of anointing in her chair as if really wasn’t an important issue compared with her husband. I also expected at least one female bishop to attend her throughout the service. Ladies in waiting just don’t hack it in this situation. I’m a retired female cleric and like things done properly.
      The King looked a bit fragile and to have his queen sit tall beside him would have been entirely fitting.
