  • After a rocky flight into Durban and settling into our chalet at Mantuma Rest Camp, we spend the next couple of days driving around Mkuze Game Reserve in search of birds and animals. Let's just say that the lions were a lot closer than what we thought...

Mkhuze is our main stomping ground. Seen lions, loads of wild dogs, huge herds of ellies, saw a lorry crash because it was chased by a male ellie! Plus if you camp, not sure if the camp site is open yet, you always It's a very special place. Thanks very much for the vlog xxxxx

Woah, that's incredible! So it didn't look like the campsite was open when we were there - perhaps undergoing renovation. We unfortunately didn't seen any Ellies but saw that they had been around, and got lucky with a leopard sighting :)
We did however bump into a ranger and he said that unfortunately there are only 2 dogs left due to poaching (getting caught in snares etc.) which is a bit of a pity.
But nevertheless, so glad that we decided to visit & I have no doubt that we will be back soon :) Very special place indeed! x

@@NicoleEddy1 Oh no, that's so sad about the dogs. We had one of our best elly sightings at the pan. It was just my hubby and I we were in one of those hides and this elly paddled through the water right in front of us. He was so calm we could have reached out and touched him. Lucky you with the leopard xxx

Loved Mkuze. Our first African birding site. Staying in a tent "cabin". Wife woke me up in the middle of the night. "There is something right outside pushing against the tent wall. The "tent" was heavy plastic. You could see through the walls. I turned on a flashlight and it was a huge Nyala bull munching on the foliage beside our wall. He was about 2' away. Quite a sight.

Thanks for this vlog. I’ve spent time at Mkhuze volunteering with WildlifeACT monitoring wild dogs, lion and cheetah for several years. Obviously 2020 was a miss..as will 2021 likely be. I loved seeing all the familiar places in your vlog. Thanks for taking me back.....until I can return in person.

Oh wow! That's amazing - unfortunately the wild dog population has depleted (I think that they're down to two males), but what a special place :) Hopefully you can return sometime soon!

@@NicoleEddy1 yes Mkhuze is my fave reserve to work at in KZN but the most heartbreaking (and most difficult work) because the poaching is so bad. Last time I was there we lost 3 dogs to snares within a couple of days. So pleased you visited and enjoyed it.

Always want more of your vlogs, especially being in the bush. What an awesome park. I had a vision of you and Blair in your 80s. I overheard a snippet of a conversation between you two. You’re in a park bird watching. Blair says lovingly, “That’s not a rock, Pigeon. It’s a tortoise!” Inspired by a sentence spoken at the beginning of this vlog about a Rock Pigeon. Sorry. I just woke up. 😉😂😎☕️

Hahaha, I hope that my eyes won't be that bad but at the rate that they're deteriorating I might be confusing elephants with rock pigeons :)

Nicole, beautiful scenery and captured brilliantly. Only problem, is that your sound quality keeps fluctuating,, ,I have to keep turning the sound up when you are talking together in the car.

    • @NicoleEddy1

Thanks Duncan :) I know, the audio on the GoPro is terrible & I do need to solve the issue when we're recording audio in the car in the future, so will come up with a solution for the next trip. Thanks for pointing it out - I know that it is irritating to have to keep on adjusting your volume the whole video.

A little bit of a nasty comment, but there is a third episode in this series that I'm currently editing which has a whole lot more featured birds which we encountered on our last day. Sorry that the video disappointed you, but hopefully there's some other good content on UA-cam that you can watch about birding.
